eh... I suppose it's different when you're at the parks almost daily. The parks become the outside world.... and the outside world becomes more Disneylike.. I dunno.

I don't want to hear annoying ring tones while I queue for a ride, let alone while on the ride - yes it has happened!

ok.. that's annoying. I'm not that inconsiderate.

Please, leave your cellular outside, you will cope and be sure that anything you may of needed your cell phone for, will be waiting for you out of the gates as you leave, when you return to the more mundane life!

I'm on call 24/7 for my work (except during my vacation)... not gonna happen. Not to mention, this is how my friends and I find each other in the parks when we're separated.

last comment from me... the original poster wanted to know how cellphone reception is at WDW... not get a speech. Lighten up and save this banter for the "annoying guests with cellphones" thread.

Since I still take family vacations to wdw, and my mom is now 50, I am quite a bit faster than her and tend to go off on my own to ride attractions like Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. If we didn't have cell phones to tell each other where to meet, we would not meet up. Trust me, I've done it before. Trying to meet someone at a certain time in the parks almost never works out--someone always ends up waiting around for a half hour, which sucks. My cell phone will be a godsend this trip. I tend to worry more about the people smoking in the queue lines than the people with cell phones.

"My name is Simon...and I like to do draww-rings!"

Cells: You need 'em if you're trying to meet up with anyone or if your party is splitting up. Just try "I'll meet you at the big ball at 11:45" and see how that works out..at least, with my friends, anyway.

Yes cell phones are a must....if you are a CP you have to have a phone....I think it should be a rule or something...required!

I have found my AT&T to work nice even in the tunnels under MK. Most people lose signals all together but i can still carry a convo even in the locker room lol

Back in the summer of 2000, there was some stuff going on at MGM and Downtown Disney that alot of people from all over came out for (myself included). We had a MAJOR cell phone network going on.

My cell phone is my "pacifier"... I never leave home without it. Never know when someone might need to get in touch with me or vice versa. I've been with Bell South/Cingular for 4 years now and have never had a problem with them no matter where I travel. I've always had good reception at WDW and other places around Orlando.

Most cell phones in North America (for example Sprint and Verison) use Qualcomm's Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital format. T-Mobile exclusively uses the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) standard that is used in Europe and Asia. AT&T Wireless and Cingular are in the process of switching over to the GSM digital format from the Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) digital format. Nextel uses its own digital format called Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN).

GSM is clearly superior to the other digital formats, however, GSM is still a much smaller network in the U.S. since it is so new to North America. Considering its rate of growth, GSM will most likely dominate the market by 2005 but my concern is about this year at WDW.

I specifically asked about T-Mobile because they use the GSM digital format exclusively. Thanks philsfan2185 and murphy for your reports about T-Mobile use at WDW. Your information was helpful. Also thanks to you no2apprentice as well for the link to the T-Mobile coverage map for Florida.

Also, marchofthecards, I really do tend to agree with you. Unfortunately, my life has been complicated by some rather serious family and legal matters that require I be available 24/7. I had to cut my last trip to WDW in half and return home to attend to some problems. Wish I still had the freedom to put everything on hold and not have to be available, but I no longer have that luxury.

I agree that phone should not be used during rides or shows but for some they are a must. We will have 11 people in our party when we go and I seriously doubt that we will all want to do the same thing at the same time teh whole time that we are there. Cell phones will allow us to stay in touch. If you don't like it then too bad. If you see me using it on a ride then feel free to kick me in the head.:hammer:

I talked fine in the contemporary on my Sprint PCS phone.

I get service through the whole WDW world.

Most cell phones these days are enabled with text messaging/email. This can be convenient if you're in a show or ride as to not to disturb other guests. Some plans have text messaging included, but otherwise you can do it for as little as 10¢ per message.

When I was at Downtown Disney earlier this month, I needed to contact my mom up in Michigan about something she wanted me to look for. She's hearing impaired and doesn't use the phone, so we kept in touch via her emailing my cell phone.

Just a thought...

That was a major decision for us when we upgraded our phones last month with Suncom. We decided to wait on the GSM phones, since the system was still new and coverage was still sparse.

From what I was told, analog will be shut off after 2005, and the other digital formats except GSM (and maybe Nextel's?) will be phased out by 2008. Nothing like forced technology.

We are using ours for the drive there and then locking it in the room safe and only checking it when we get to the room. We are on vacation!! I don't want to know what is going on in the real world. ;)

I don't check my cell phone, but I do like to have it in case of an emergency. It's just that sometimes when I do need it, the signal isn't available.

We lived about 25 miles from the Mackinac Bridge. We moved from there last year. I don't miss the snow that is for sure.

I want to thank all of you that responded to this thread. Your insights were very helpful. As a follow up, I wanted to share some information with all of you. I purchased a T-Mobile contract. I did a lot of research and field testing of T-Mobile cell phones before I decided to go with them. Aside from checking with the members of this site, I also checked some geek cell phone sites (such as http://www.howardforums.com/) and (of course) the T-Mobile site. I discovered some information that might be useful to other cell phone users.

Naturally, my first concern was how well will T-Mobile work in my local area. I have previously used the Nextel system and found it to be pretty good but there are some "dead spots" in my local area. I also found that Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, Cingular and the many other companies also had their share of "dead spots" as well. So, I decided to check the cell phone tower locations at www.fcc.gov/wtb/uls.

I became concerned because T-Mobile doesn't own very many towers as compared to the other big companies. With that information, I almost crossed T-Mobile off my list. However, then I learned some important information. If you have ever taken the time to look at a typical cell phone tower, you'll notice that they most often have 3 or more separate antennas. Each antenna is used by a different cell phone provider. For example, Verizon and AT&T wireless own a bunch of towers in my local area, yet T-Mobile has antenna arrays on all of those towers. Apparently they lease space on these towers.

In the U.S., the T-Mobile GSM phones are dual band (900 MHz and 1900 MHz) but only the 1900 MHz frequency is used in North America. In my field tests, I found the T-Mobile coverage to be excellent in my area for a wide radius. The "switch" between towers when traveling in a vehicle was flawless.

Thanks again for all your help!:D
