Castle Lights

Unless it's been upgraded, the Spaceship Earth lighting isn't as sophisticated as the Castle's. Then again, it doesn't need to be because it doesn't have any shows associated with it that require many lighting schemes.

It's simply a number of flood lights with glass filters. Because each fixture is only a single non-changing color, the only way to change colors is to fade from one set of lights to another. There are lighting positions in six locations: above the turnstiles, on the roofs of the buildings on either side of the entrance plaza, the buildings on either side of SSE, the northern ends of Innoventions and above the corporate lounge at the back of SSE. You can see the turnstile lights as you leave the park, and some of the other postions as you ride by on the monorail.

Ooo...how neat would that be if they upgraded the lighting and Spaceship Earth did rotate through different color schemes. :slurp:

If I remember correctly, the lighting used right now has to warm up before it is fully illuminated. I wonder if they could get away with something just as efficient and bright for such a large object without needing that kind of lighting.

SSE originally did have a number of colour schemes that were crossfaded through the evening:

I think it would be cool if they incorporated more lighting effects for spaceship earth into illuminations....

also, correct me if im wrong, but do I remember see lighting effects all over epcot when I was a kid? I seem to remember seeing lots of gobos on walls of futureworld of figment etc.

Lighting plays such a great part of the disney park experience.

Yes, the Irideons were sold by Vari-Lite to ETC...who then discontinued the product line (AR500s & AR5s).

They haven't issued a replacement (and probably won't)....and it's incredibly difficult to get parts for them.

Many other companies have outdoor fixtures...such as Martin, with their "Exterior" line of outdoor fixtures...which currently illuminate the Castle Stage.

I think it's so cool that the castle changes color and looks like it's glowing, and you don't see the lights or trails of light shining on the castle. It appears like the light is radiating from the castle. *Sigh*

I know that it has been said that there are no LEDs used but ther appear to be some new light towers beside the castle stage that do use leds. I dont think they light the castle but are for the stage.

To Address All Three of you...

Disneylander...they are located in the "gazebo" buildings that also house the control booths out in front of the stage.

Azndisneyfan...Yes, it's a cute castle. But wait until a really muggy or foggy night, or when the pyro smoke is blowing from the north...you'll see ALL of the beams shining onto the Castle...but kinda looks cool :)

Brian Skinner...Actually as of right now, there are nothing on the sidelight lifts...they are bare. The sidelight lifts are not new...quite old actually. However the LED fixtures that you've seen are for the stage and not the Castle. And those LED fixtures will return after a small rehab before the first night show at the first Pirate and Princess event.

I did find two lights in one pic. The one looking at the bunkers on the right side of the castle. There is one near the flag. And one near the blue turret. And from what i can remember seeing. There seems to be only two locations for lighting along the banks of the moat. I could be wrong though. If anyone could point them out that would be great.
