Rehab means they are working no the ride. If they were going to close it, they would not need to 'rehab' it.

So if the report of a rehab is correct, this is great news. I'd be surprised if the ride closed anytime soon. Seasonal operation I can see, but closed? Not in the immediate future :D

REHAB = Wonderful!

Perhaps even a minor (or major) update to the last scene. That would be wonderful.

But minor paint touch-ups, general maintanance, etc. would be very great also.

But yes, let's pray, brethren, that this is not the last we see of the good ol' C, O, and P! :)

Or, it could be a clever ruse and in fact this "refurb" ends up sending CoP to the big theme park in the sky just like happened to "Superstar Limo". Remember, according to schedules SSL was supposed to reopen in May/June - and it wasn't until then it was announced it would never open again.

I was really scared when I read the article earlier today - first thing I thought of was, "Dang, we might never see it again."

That said, a proper refurb and update as described would be phenominal - but I just can't shake the nagging feeling that they are trying to avoid a "protest" mess like they had with Mr. Toad - can you imagine the venom that would spew over closing an attraction that Walt Disney himself worked on? Once the doors are closed all bets are off...

I really don't think they're gonna close it. When I was there at the end of June, there was an honest to goodness LINE outside of CoP everytime I walked by it. I went on it 6 times and the theater was 3/4 full each time. I really don't see how they could close it. Any type of a rehab would be wonderful! Let's keep our fingers crossed!

The demise of the COP would be a slap in the face to the most important person of the Disney organization, Walt himself, as I've said over and over again.

There is simply no justification for its closure, especially when there are acres upon hundreds of acres of usable land all around the Magic Kingdom. There is no need for an attraction of such magnitude as the COP to be closed for a gift shop/minor attraction, or worse yet, for nothing at all.

We were just talking about the need for a little rehabbing last week. We were able to ride it multiple times when we were there and there was never a wait. I wish more people cared about the CoP, but I actually heard people saying it was "a waste of time!"

I certainly hope they don't close it. A rehab would be wonderful. It might be nice if they refurbished the outside, to make it look more inviting. It is a rather drab building, and if you don't know what is inside, why stop to visit?
It has always been one of my favorite rides, and the best place to be when one of those infamous afternoon storms pop up. It is dry, air conditioned, and highly entertaining. It is also a nice ride for my parents to take my kids while my husband and I hit SM. :)

I heard that maybe the Smithsonian was going to take the whole thing off of Disney's hands to put in their museums in Washington. Don't know if it's true or not but I will be sure to ride it next week!

Imagine if they were to give the exterior a "Progressland"-style overlay! :)

But trust me, any general rehab would do! Just keep the Carousel spinnin'!

Rehab would be WONDERFUL!! No - not a permanent closure. If Disney closes this, they are red meat to a grizzly bear.
red meat to a FAMISHED grizzly bear... ;)

I agree with the idea of a "Progressland" style of rehab, with a post-show added (perhaps interactive, looking at various visions of the future that are partly created by your own imagination).

I would also add a short pre-show that puts it into perspective, and ultimately sort-of sets up Epcot's existence (as it is related to Walt's ideas of human progress and came partly from his participation in the World's Fair that featured COP -- it would thus also give more MK day visitors a chance to understand Epcot and Walt's visions, ultimately encouraging more visitors to Epcot.)

Ultimately it would have a positive and entertaining message that supports Disney World's reason for being.

COP NEEDS updating BADLY!!!

What this show building really needs is a new show and to move the old show to another Disneyland that hasn't seen it yet, that way Walt Disney won't be "rolling in his grave". I don't know about you folks, but I liked the updated COP show from the late 70's-early 80's better than the "original version" they changed it back to (current show).

It's time for a new show that uses the same building and caroussel theater concept. But such a new show should be of the utmost quality and entertainment value, as well as imaginative. It should be of a sci-fi theme, humorous, special-effects ladden, use the latest AA technolgy, exciting, surprising, cute, and maybe even musical. Maybe it could be tied-in to a Disney-owned sci-fi franchise that hasn't been used yet at the parks, such as the up-coming Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!

From what I understand a sci-fi themed musical with aliens was planned for DL's COP building, but Eisner turned it down because it was "just another AA show". Supposedly, the imagineer kept re-working the script to get Eisner's approval, but no luck each time. My idea is that there should be much more than a bunch of aliens singing. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy may be the answer.

As to the current rehab plans... something is better than nothing, as the current show is in desperate state of needing repair! I wonder what exactly they are planning in this rehab...

I see where you are coming from. Thing is, Superstar Limo was a hated and vilified attraction and Mr. Toad isn't even half the "classic" that CoP is. If Disney management is even dumber than most people assume they are, they won't close the ride.

I agree, CoP is easy to miss from it's exterior. If you don't see the building rotating, the 'busy tourist" can easily walk by it. The outside of the building needs some "pizzaz" or something "invitng" to make people want to walk over to. :)

The redoing of Small World should give hope to quality rehabs and that Al Weiss is not Pressler/Harris stooge. Al Weiss was even against Fast Pass when 1st introduced, if that tells you what kind of guy he is

But he rejected Haunted Mansion Holiday! Ugggghhh... Maybe that's a good thing.. IMHO the PotC upgrade should be the park's #1 prioirity!
