Really. Remember the retention pond used to be where Space Mountain now is. It is designated to be built on. Here is the never realised 1980 Tomorrowland phase three proposal:

Plus there's the management lot (that they stole from the theatre)

Other "easy" designated areas are north east outside the berm, and behind BTM (once again outside the berm and beyond the canal)

The small space between the CP and Treehouse (originally planned to be an Adventureland restaurant connected to the CP kitchen complex) is really beyond use now with backstage and JC maintainence. There is space south of the PoTC show building but it'd need an Indy style access arrangement. South of Splash you have AVAC and parade storage making it not that viable. Long term there's north of Fantasyland but that area is not easy to build on since it was never properly prepared for use.

If anything Tomorrowland has the most designated expansion space in one land.

Thanks for the explanation! I mentioned the parking lot (old theater area) in my original post and still hope it'll one day be an extension of Main Street and connector to Tomorrowland. a connector there would really help congestion along Main Street at parade and fireworks times. A New Orleans Square expansion would be great for the area.

So, is the area north of SM usable? It seems like it would be perfect for expansion.

Well, with Disneyland having the original Star Tours, more Star Wars going there at least makes sense. Considering how much of their 1998 make-over was a disaster that left much of the land gutted I've consider anything new an improvement, even EO becoming a blatant (and possibly permanent) commercial for the series of upcoming films.

Now, adding Star Wars to the Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland? That is an option I'm significantly less happy about.

Closing in the outdoor theater in DL's Tomorrowland was a travesty IMO. As a kid, I remember the place being so full of life and seeming so large. Going up the escalators above the theater to SM was a great memory. The whole area was breathtaking.

As for a SW overlay to Tomorrowland, ugh. Why can't Tomorrowland just be Tomorrowland? It's an amazing concept as it is. There's plenty to do there if you have one iota of creativity. It doesn't need a movie tie-in – no SW, no Stark.

Besides, how great would an Adventure Park in Anaheim be with SW, Marvel, The Incredibles, etc.?

The theater, going up the escalators to Space Mountain, all of that are really great (and really vivid) memories for me too. To think all of that is gone, along with the Peoplemover, and the Circlevision theater and Mission to Mars converted to non-attraction space is really awful.

I don't love all of the changes that have come to Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom over the years, but Disneyland completely failed in their attempt to upgrade their TL and not only ruined it, but after 15 years still haven't fixed it either.
