Well, we got home from our WDW trip about 7 hours ago, so I thought what better time to try and share the memories, the disappointments, and the highlights of our 7th WDW trip.
This is our first trip back to WDW since our very enjoyable Christmas / New Year trip of 2008. A lot has changed since then - Magic Bands, FP+, new rides, missing and closed rides, and, new restaurants.
I'll start with an apology. I have over 1,850 photos from our two weeks and these will take an awful lot of sorting and editing - so don't go expecting to see any on this report (yet). I will post the best ones when I can make some more time. (apparently, I also have a life outside my enjoyment of WDW).
The Players (for those who missed it, or who have forgotten my pre-trip report - or for those that couldn't be bothered to read it in the first place).
Myself and my good lady wife. Our daughters, Nicola and Rebecca, and we were going with Nicola's boyfriend Chris. This was to be Chris's second WDW visit - his previous visit about 18 years ago.
The Pre Trip stages The booking was made almost 12 months in advance. We booked a standard room at AKL and booked through a British tour operator COSMOS - they were cheaper than both Virgin and British Airways. We paid for our airline seats to be together, to ensure that we weren't separated around the cabin - no need to to online check-in then, right ??
I booked our ADRs at 180 days - we had a free Disney Dining Plan (1TS, 1 QS + 1 snack) and we were determined to make the most of it. I managed to get an evening dinner at BOG and we also booked several meals at restaurants that we'd never previously visited. I even got a BOG lunch booking several weeks later.
FP+ were booked at 60 days.
The First Disappointment Chris is trying to set up his own business. He was fortunate to get on a US program being run in the California area which would hopefully put him in touch with people wanting to invest in new businesses like his. His time in California would conflict with our holiday, he would miss our first week, but we would get to spend the second week together.
Manchester Airport I didn't see the need to do the online check-in before we arrived. However, the girl doing the check-in disagreed and she was issuing tickets for where they still had seats available, until I produced my holiday confirmation which showed that our seats, although not allocated at that stage, had been booked and paid for. Free upgrade to Premium Economy - extra seat width, legroom, premium movies for free and complimentary bar .
Orlando The flight was smooth, almost on time and pretty uneventful. The line at Alamo's rental desk needed a FP line, but once sorted it was a quick walk to pick up the car and a short drive to AKL.
AKL We were greeted on arrival and escorted to one of the check-in / reception desks. Magic Bands were waiting for us, a credit card was soon added for charging purposes and a short walk to our first floor rooms WITH savannah view - we only booked standard rooms and were realistically expecting a nice view of the parking lot.
Concluding Day 1 We had booked a meal at DTD for our first evening as we didn't want to waste one of our 14 day park tickets with less than half a day in the park. So, for something easy to eat, we booked Planet Hollywood. We have eaten here on previous trips and really do have mixed feelings towards the place. Brian was our server and he honestly couldn't do enough to welcome us, he explained the menu (for DDP users), and he was topping up the Cokes without being asked. He was singing along to the tunes, it got our trip off to the start that we wanted.
Coming next - A day at AK and disappointing meals at DTD
