Can't Make This Stuff Up Part II- Lights, Motors, Action! Sponsorship News

I dont know how many of you are NASCAR fans but Georgia Pacific used to sponser a stock car in the Winston cup(nextel cup) series. Im not 100% sure on the driver but I want to say it was Jerry Nadeu.

Im glad they have found a sponsor for this. Its always great to hear of new things coming to the world

Stunt Show isn't the only thing that's happening with GP:

As a part of this new agreement, Brawny, as well as Georgia-Pacific's other consumer brands Dixie, Vanity Fair, Quilted Northern, Angel Soft and Sparkle, will have prominent brand exposure throughout the Disney theme parks and resorts, including:

-- Sponsorship of Mickey's Backyard BBQ at Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground
-- Sponsorship of Chip 'n Dale's Campfire Sing-a-long at Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground
-- Sponsorship of the Guest arrival brochure at the Walt Disney World resorts
-- Sponsorship of the Festival Arena at Disneyland Park
-- Sponsorship of a "Healthy Hand Washing Guidelines" for Guest restrooms
-- Brand presence on paper items, such as beverage napkins, paper plates and bowls, and dispenser napkins

It looks like a goldmine for WDC.......I always thought WDC would be far more successful at getting "product sponsors"....How did United Technologies ever justify the expence of sponsoring The Living Seas?.....Meanwhile, GP, Kodak, Coke, and Nestle can justify the expense though product placement and recognition.

Well hopefully this will put a little money back into the "MGM fund," so maybe they won't close Millionaire and the like for at least a little while longer. To that end, Disney needs more sponsors.

And it's interesting (almost comical) that Disney has to keep finding new product companies to sponsor the attractions...without getting a competitor of an existing Disney sponsor! I guess the biggest debacle this caused was the Kodak/Fujifilm debate over Fujifilm's potential sponsorship of the Japan pavilion's "Mount Fuji" attraction. But it begs to reason what OTHER companies could possibly sponsor an attraction. Just don't let it be Thimble Drome.

Georgia Pacific still does sponsor a Nextel Cup car. They sponsor the #45, Kyle Petty (as was previously mentioned :) ).

Jerry Nadeau drove the #01 Army car, until his horrifying crash at Richmond International Raceway in May 2003. Since then, Joe Nemechek has been driving the car.

I think this sponsorship is wonderful. I also think it makes perfect sense, but I guess that's the race fan in me seeing the previous partnership. I already am able to think of cars when I see Georgia Pacific. I am very excited for this show.

I dont mean to sound redundant but again GP makes more than paper products. They make building supplies as well. Such as plywood that can be used to make ramps for say, Oh I dont know......stunt cars. I hope this would make more sense to people.

As a frequent guest at Fort Wilderness with out RV, these are of special interest to me. Although I've never done the Backyard BBQ, it sounds like fun from outside the area

However, The Campfire program is a long-time favorite of mine and its good to know that now with a sponsor (I don't think it had any sponsor before) and isn't going anywhere. I don't believe its just for Fort Wilderness guests, so if you're looking for something different to do one night and haven't been yet, grab a WDW Resort bus over to Fort Wilderness and get off at the main Bus Depot. From there, grab the "Yellow" bus (there's three different colors that circle solely throughout the campground), get off at the 1400 Loop (Big Bear and Little Bear), walk into the 1400 "loop" and turn left, walk down a bit and you should be able to see the campfire program on your left hand side. They do a sing along, Chip and Dale walk around, they have two fire-pits set up where everyone can sit around and cook marshmallows or make smores (bring your own stuff or you can buy it there) and then its all capped off with a movie on an outdoor big screen (different Disney movie everynight....everything from animated features to Live Action...usually nothing above a PG rating). There are semi-permanent stands built around to sit and watch the show on also. Its a true blast and what I would consider a little "hidden" Disney treasure.

This is perhaps my favorite thing this GP Sponsorshop will bring. Its seems trite, but healthy hand washing is THE best way to stop the spread of infection and I can't believe the number of folks who leave restrooms without washing their hands at all and then touch the handlebars on rides, etc. Not to make anybody a germ-a-phobe or anything, but even little signs like this to "show" how to properly wash your hands is always welcome by me. Seems like a good new sponsor all around.

I can see GP sponsorship working for the stunt show. I am also a fan of nascar. Maybe they could even find a place to show one of these....but I doubt it.

Interestingly enough, I left Georgia-Pacific in June after working there for 8 years in order to move to Florida and work for Disney (working in HR for both companies). I was quite shocked to hear the news this week on the cast portal. My former boss is now the VP of HR for that business segment at GP, so I got to talk to her about it a little bit.

GP has changed its image over the years from being a manufacturer of wood products (you can buy plywood at Home Depot) and copy paper (Office Depot, Staples, etc.) to one of marketing toward family consumers. GP had a decade of growth in which they acquired several different operations. While GP had its own paper products (Sparkle, Angel Soft, Coronet), the acquisition of Fort James gave GP a stronger brand presence (Brawny, Dixie, Quilted Northern to name a few).

The company shift has been away from hardware consumer (although that is GP's original bread and butter since the company started close to 80 years ago) to the family consumer at Walmart, Target, Sams. With the recent venture into NASCAR, it makes perfect sense that GP be the sponsor of the motor cars attraction at Disney-MGM Studios. In addition, GP manufactures "home away from home products" -- those bathroom and kitchen products that are used in hospitals, hotels, and other venues where you are outside of your home and comfort zone in an effort to feel a little more comfortable with familiar product branding. So, GP would want to continue with that effort of being family oriented by affiliating itself with the most popular vacation spot in the world.

And, it doesn't hurt Disney much by having another sponsor to avoid internal operating costs for another attraction. The only thing that could possibly hurt Disney in the process is that GP has a lot of pending litigation related to asbestos. Up until the end of my tenure there, GP was trying to back legislation to create a fund for the lawsuits instead of having to go to court for every single thing. In addition, there were some old environmental liabilities that GP had. So, it's just a question of Disney being cautious about being affiliated with those types of issues.

Sorry for rambling. I just thought it was an interesting topic given my past with GP and my future with Disney. :)
