Can you turn tickets into a AP?

Okay...so we are planning on getting APs next year and I am wondering.. if we purchased a package for our upcoming trip..can we turn these into APs and get credit for what we have already paid or do we have to start all over?
We know we want to go more than once again next year.
I have never stayed onsite and always bought tickets at the gate so please don't flame me for a dumb question..:)
Many thanks in advance for answers!

Thank you everybody for the answers, I had no idea if it could be done with a package and I would have never thought of the dining credits so thank you for mentioning that!
I know that an AP would be the smart thing to do because we know that we want to go at least twice next year. So if I apply it after the dining credits are used with 1 day left on admission I would get a full 1 day credit towards the AP?
The only other thing that I am thinking is would I be better off to wait until our trip in February because I know that we won't be going back until then (no more vacation time this year) I wasn't thinking about the expiration starting from this trip... :hammer:

That's why I asked if you were planning to upgrade on this trip - the expiration is a consideration.

Close. You will get full value for the ticket but the AP will be back dated to the first day you used the MYW ticket.

If you have one admission left on a five-day MYW ticket and are within 14 days of first use of that ticket, you get credit for the full cost of the five-day ticket, but the AP effective date will be the first day you used the five-day ticket.

EDIT: Mrerk beat me to it!

Okay... wow, I didn't understand that. That is a big savings! We have 9 day tickets so maybe it would still be the smart thing to do. We would just have to plan our trips closer together for next year to get full use before it expires. We know that we are going to go in February for 10 days and again later in the year. If we had the APs I am sure we would go as often as we can. It just seems crazy to keep buying regular tickets because our February trip will be our third in a year.
Thanks for the great info, I knew you guys could help me with this!

To be safe [since I have no direct experience] you can upgrade a MYW ticket so long as it has at least one remaining admission left on it and you're within the 14-days from first use and get full credit toward an AP that will have a start date of the first use of the MYW ticket.

Actually, if you've used your final admission *that day*, you can still upgrade it. (As the ticket is still an "active" ticket) But if you use your last park admission and then try to upgrade it a day or two later, you'll have a problem (even if it's still within 14 days)

We went to WDW 1/1/07-1/7/07. We did not have AP's. I purchased the package that included dining and base tickets. As luck would have it, we ended up going back on 1/25/07. At that point I wanted to upgrade my original ticket to an AP. I explained this to a CM at the front gate and they just charged me the difference b/t my original ticket and the AP. They back dated our Ap's to 1/1. It worked out great - we are heading back down in 17 days. We also have a Thanksgiving trip planned!
Good luck!
