1) Anything except the administrator rank is given by post count. The more you post the higher your rank goes.

2) Replies are instant, as soon as someone posts them. How long that takes depends, of course, on how long it takes for someone to reply.

3) What do you mean by manage? What you can do is click on your user name with the blue underline on the top of your posts, then go to "Find more posts by <username>". This will show you your posts, in chronological order, newest first.

The reason why you might see your thread get passed by is because people only usually comment on threads either a) they have an on topic comment on or b) the long threads with lots of replies/views.

I guess I have been warned...Sounds like you two know eachother pretty well. I guess I need to be a little more careful which board I post to. I went to the board with the most people in it...pretty smart of me, wasn't it? I got the two of you to explain the information that I needed. BTW...thanks for the help.

Just so you know, if you start a thread or if you post in a thread, you can automatically (once it is set up that way through your User CP) get an e-mail stating that someone has responded in that thread.

I'm just the opposite. I usually shy away from the long threads (unless they really spark my interest), and stick to short threads so that I can read everything and reply.

I use the email notification. I think I know of only one other person who does, but it makes it so much easier for me to keep up.

Pretty much all of your questions have been answered. But I have to add my 2 cents about the lack of replies to your posts. My observation is that these boards are very cliquish. If you are not part of it, very rarely will you get a reply to something you post. I have experienced this first hand in several threads. I make a comment/observation and it is hardly touched on. Yet if a certain other person (in the clique) makes the same comment, everyone else chimes in.

As I recall, a fairly new member experienced the same thing and actually went on to create a thread noting the same thing I did. Shortly after that thread, I moved and hadn't been on WDWMagic until recently getting up and running with I-net access again. So I have no idea if that person is still around or gave up.

I myself have not noticed that- I will say that often, which threads I respond to all depends on my mood & the amount of time I have to kill. If I'm feeling goofy, I'll hang out in chit-chat or the PML; if someone asks a question I actually know the answer to, I'll post in that thread; if I have a lot of time on my hands, I'll venture into more detailed threads (or if a particular thread comes up in conversation somewhere). Since I don't get to Disney very often, I don't have a lot of expertise to share.

Also, I and probably a lot of other people don't go forum-to-forum; instead, we click "show new posts" and get the list of what's been active since we were last on. So this morning, I might do that and get 4 pages of threads... of those, I might check a small handful; later, when I come on, only threads that have had new posts in the past couple hours will show up. So I miss a lot of threads that way. It's not intentional :wave:

About replies..

I think the clique comment is a little backwards - everyone seems to check out new or interesting threads regardless of if a poster is new, but there are certainly some people who wont post to my threads because they don't like me. I've had time to earn a reputation

Back to the replies, I scanned all the threads you've posted and I can give you the reasons I didn't reply, and admittedly didn't even look. They just didn't interest me or i knew the answers was "common knowledge" and someone else would reply with an adequate answer.

Some people come to chit-chat, some come for info and rumors (that'd be me) and some come to plan their trips. I find it interesting how those 3 groups tend to interact. The news/rumor folk tend to be sticklers for the "rules" and proper forums because they don't want to read trip reports or have to see the screen clogged up with info about the wonders of dole-whips.

The chit-chatters get really offended when the news/rumors folks point out that they really don't care about so-and-so's personal life - of which there are weekly updates. This happens - hmm.. i'd say atleast a few times a year. It's not exclusive to this board, it happens everywhere and i find it fascinating that it perpetuates and some people find it entertaining.

Then you've got trip planners - they seem to have good intentions, but they're not gonna stick around. Once their trip is over you might get a trip report. I think they're like fair-weather friends and needy ones at that. "Tell me this.." "I need to know.." and then once their trip is done they're gone. I think it's rude. Just my opinion.

People of course aren't just these stereotypes, but mixes of the interests and others not touched-on. It sorta gives you an idea of the dynamic of these boards.

First off let me start by saying welcome! :wave:

I think your questions have already been answered, but I'd like to comment on something that someone else brought up...

I'm not so sure about the term "cliques" (they usually have a bad connotation, no?) but maybe it would be better to say "groups". There are people here who use the boards strictly for trip planning and don't participate too much otherwise. There are others who take great pride in being able to bring us the latest news & rumors, vacation deals and company updates. There are some who sample all that the forums offer and others who just hang out to have a laugh or two (CHIT-CHAT is a fun place so don't forget to stop by). I myself am a "sampler... I wander around looking for what interests me. I may read a thread and have nothing to add so I don't reply or it just may not interest me at the time. Then there are the threads that I have quite a few posts to (as in the Recipe?? thread and the Photo Contests). It has nothing to do (at least for me) with liking or not liking the person who started the thread. I form my opinion of people by how they treat others, whether they are helpful or just post to cause trouble. We have all started threads that have gotten very few or even no answers, thats the way it goes sometimes.

To gain a good reputation here just try to follow the rules, ask pertinent questions and give honest, helpful answers. We all have bad days where we just aren't ourselves so I always try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Remember its not what you say, but how you say it that really matters. And another thing if you make an error try to correct it. If you are wrong apologize... it doesn't hurt and actually helps in the long run.

EDIT: Just wanted to add another point that may not have been taken into account - some of us here have formed real friendships with others. Most are based on our common love of all that is Disney, but many of us have quite a few other things in common also. We converse on AIM on a regular basis, talk on the phone and even visit with each other at meets or whenever we are in Orlando (or traveling to another's home town). There are also married couples and dating couples, siblings or as in my case mother/daughter duos. Its only natural that we will make a comment in each other's thread.
The longer you are here, the more friends you will make.

Like I said, this was just an observation of mine. No attack on anyone was intended. As I pointed out as well, others have felt the same way and mentioned it in past postings. As far as cliques or groups, they are not only online, but in school, work, or anywhere. That is how life goes. I generally don't give it much thought.

I myself utilize the boards much like Erika. Picking and choosing anything that might be interesting out of new posts for the day. Sometimes I am interested in park news and rumors. Others to see if there are any trip deals or the like. And the occasional laugh out of chit-chat.

To address the comments about friendships formed, I have made a dear friend here, who I AIM, e-mail, and call quite often. So I am not knocking the users whatsoever. All I am doing is imparting an observation that they appear to selectively reply between two or more people who make the similar posts/comments making it look as if there is a group or clique mentality present.

I believe I have always tried be respectful to members on these boards and answer questions when I could, or post comments/observations relevant to a given thread. If anyone feels I was out of line, nothing was ever said to me.

I hope this adds better understanding to why I posted what I did. Again this is not an attack or slam on anyone.
