Can someone explain the difference between Countdown To Extinction and Dinosaur?

I've heard some people say that the original Countdown To Extinction was better than Dinosaur? How was it better/different? I love Dinosaur and am interested it the original attraction. I thought it was the same ride just with a different name?

Yeah, you're right, only the name changed. Some people say the ride pattern (how the vehicle moves, up, down, pitch, etc.) has changed (and it may have over the years) but I don't notice any changes, they just renamed it back when they released the movie Dinosaur. The way the plot runs (the same type of dino as in the movie, the extinction thing, etc.) my guess is that the movie was going to be named "Countdown to Extinction" but that when they changed the movie title they change the ride's title as well.

Besides the signing, the only difference I noticed was that the dinosaur statue in the front of the building changed from a triceratops to Aladar.

Actually there is a difference in intensity. I seem to remember CTX having a height requirement of 52 inches...I know for a fact it was at least 48" and it is now 40". They toned it down quite a bit so the kiddies can ride.

There is also a difference at the end when you are coming up to the Carnotaurus in Countdown To Extinction when he appears on the right side of your vehicle in the distance he would not be lit at all, and would lurch out in front of your vehicle at the end from total darkness aboe. He is now lit off to the side before he begins to roar and then appears partially lit when he lunges for your ride vehicle from above also before he begins roaring before you escape.

This was all done so kids could see what was going to be roaring at them, and not scaring them half to death.

As ISTCNavigator57 has said the ride was made somewhat smoother and less violent movements so that smaller Guests may ride as well. Nothing was changed in regard to physical placement of any AA's in the ride, or any additions or deletions to the soundtrack.

I like the little tributes that have been left in tact with the attraction to count down to extinction.

For example all of the time rovers still have CTX imprinted on the sides of them, and at the loading bay on the wall there is something like CTX - DAK - 1988. Which is obiously Count Down to Extinction - Disney's Animal Kingdom - 1998 (year DAK opened). It may be in a different order to that but I think from memory that is what it is.

WOW, I just watched the video you posted, it is absolutely fantastic, great work, how long did that take you to build in RCT3?

Yep. You can tell the difference the most in the first few moments of the ride. It used to be a lot more thrilling. But what can you do?

This is true. You can read the details from the time at http://www.wdwmagic.com/animal_archive1.htm - see the January 24 2000: CTX Motion Downgrades upodate

Here`s a question regarding the soundtrack; in all the live video I have there is no musical score in the background of the attraction. Was there ever a plan for an orchestrated score, or was one ever used in the early days of CTX?

Or maybe perhaps it`s just a demo score that was scrapped.

No there wasnt ever a score. The first version of the audio was similar to what is in place today, but Seeker has a real attitude problem, and the script was terrible. That was reworked into what is in place today.

There was an MP3 circulating the net, where a fan had added a score, but that was not official, and just the work of a fan.

Here what they could do: reprogram the cars with either the rough or the smooth movements script at loading depending if there are kids or not, or as per requested by passengers.

Thanks, Steve. Guess you could say I`ve come across a propsed score for CTX then. Sounds like the real mcoy; fully orchestrated and timed to the attraction to the second. And it would have worked really well too!

BTW, I did send WDWMagic my Dinosaur vid didn`t I? It has this score mixed into the Seeker source narration.

WOW that RCT3 recreation is amazing...if only my computer could hold that much space so I could run it without frezzing every 5 sec. Personally, I like the name Countdown to Extinction better.

Thank you everyone for your comments on my RCT3 recreation of Dinosaur! It was so much fun to make, although it did take 5 whole days (I was on winter vacation from school)!

I also made a re-creation of The Haunted Mansion. http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=499249

The Haunted Mansion was my first RCT3 ride recreation. Most of the walls and scenery I made, then Imported into the game. This re-creation took weeks. Enjoy!
