Camping In Tent at FW

So who has ever camped in a tent at FW? I'm considering it because I love the outdoors and its something new to try. (Plus I love the scenery FW has to offer.) I'm assuming in the hot months it has to be pretty brutal, but the winter months probably offer some really nice cool nights. Any comments?

Our kids (young adults) camped there in December and they were cold but said it was not too bad once they got to sleep. They didn't stay awake all night shivering, and they all said they would do it again so it could not have been that bad! I would think October, November, March, April and May would be pleasant. June, July and August would be miserable. I love the campgrounds! I hope you enjoy staying there!

Thanks for the info! I'm sure that a decent sleeping bag should eliminate being cold at night. I'm looking forward to it.

I totally read this as Future World. :ROFLOL:

DUH! It would be a beautiful and safe place to tent camp...if you do it please post a TR so we can see how it went. I didn't see where you are from, but beware of bugs here in Florida. I have tent camped many times in the Ocala National Forest and ants in the tent is a bad thing....

Haha. Future World would be a little difficult to say the least.:animwink: I'm from Long Island, NY and I go to school in DC so I've seen my share of nasty and pesty mosquitoes and the like, but I forgot to think of ground little crawlers that can get in the tent. That will definitely be something to consider!

I've actually been eaten by ants more than anything camping. :brick:

The other biggie depending on when you camp is the infamous rains here. I always put a tarp under my tent and string a tarp between trees over it if it is looking like rain. I mean, bring extra tarps.

This is also good info. The tent that my I have is fairly durable and is pretty good in wet weather. (Hoping there won't be). Didn't think of a tarp. I can def fit one in to my luggage.

Question: Does anyone know how the bathroom/shower facilities are at Fort Wilderness?

The facilities are extremely nice - you should look online at the pics. I would sleep in the bathrooms,:lol::lol:, they are that nice. There is a map online so you can try and see where all the camping areas area. Each loop has a bathroom facility - IIRC it is like a hotel's.

This is really good to know. And kind of expected I guess because of "Disney standards." I've been on some camping trips where I'd rather NOT shower or use the bathroom than actually use the site's facilities. :lookaroun This is also my two younger sister's first camp out trip so they will definitely enjoy nice places to get "ready" for the parks.

Yeah, my primative camping experience in AUGUST in Florida 2 years in a row will never, ever happen again.

I want to take our little old Scotty camper to FW one day - not sure I want to ever tent camp again....I don't know if I could do the parks all day not sleeping in a nice bed...:lookaroun

My friends and I are all doing this, too! Your children were fine with just sleeping bags? We're flying down, so luggage is an issue, and it would be nice to know we only need a sleeping bag, nothing extreme.

I'm also flying down, but with three other people. And since airlines are being a pain about extra baggage, we're trying to combine all clothes into 2 suitcases with the sleep/tent gear in 2 others. So hopefully we won't get whacked by a stupid fee for having a second bag.

We flew in that year too. We packed sleeping bags like luggage and rented tents and cots from "group camping" at FW. They had everything all set up and took it all down when we left. We stayed in a cabin , while they camped in tents! I no longer have the group camping phone number but I am sure the reservation center will provide it to you. The tent was an extra 30 a night and the cots were 3 or 4 dollars a piece, we rented 3 cots and one 3 man tent.

So you rented a tent from FW? This seems like MUCH LESS of a hassle then bringing one and setting it up (always a treat to put up the tent ). I'm going to have to look up that phone number now!

I'll echo what others have said.

Heat and torrential downpours would be my main concerns.

As far as bugs go, they do spray quite often.

Bath houses are very nice. Likely cleaner than yours at home. Can get busy at peak times, as a lot of smaller RV'ers will simply walk to the bath houses to take their showers.

It's been a LONG time since I've tent camped, and quite truthfully, I don't miss it one bit! When I'm on vacation in WDW, I'm not sure coming home after a long day to a hot wet tent is something I would look forward to!

That being said, couldn't you use an air mattress?

:ROFLOL::ROFLOL::ROFLOL:You pretty much summed up all of my posts. I told my husband about this thread and teasingly asked if he would want to tent camp at WDW and he gave me the :eek::eek: look.

Maybe we're just getting old!

It appeared to be a standard "army" pup tent fit for three people in cots, nothing fancy. It did have a floor and flaps to tie down or up and close at night and it was roomy for three people. It was tall enough for my kids (all in the late teens or early 20's when we went, college age) to stand up in without too much bending, maybe just a head lowering manuever was all that was needed. Very convienent. If you go at a time when there are a lot of "group campers" like boy scouts, girls scouts etc....they will not have any tents available so call and make arrangements asap when you know your dates. I have no idea when the group campers would be using the tents but I am guessing early summer and fall break? It is FW's best kept secret! I only wish I could "rent" a decked out RV from them and have them have it there all set up and parked , ready for me to live in for a week or so! I would do that in a heart beat! I love FW.

Us too! That is why we rent a cabin, I feel like I am "roughing" it but really I am not. Plus , when you tell people you love to camp at FW, they get the visual of tent camping and stay away. Making FW a quiet , peaceful piece of heaven right in my happy place. :D

I have stayed at FW many times and bugs have never been an issue. The comfort stations are very nice and we use those even though I'm there with my parents in their motorcoach. Due to limited space in the motorcoach we usually pitch at least one tent, last time two and have people sleep in it(them). My DH did last November and never got too cold at night and slept very well once he adjusted to the sound of the buses and they don't run all night anyway. I'm not much at a tent person and appreciate the comforts a well appointed camp ground can give you!
