Camping at FW

Hi all,

I have looked at a couple other forums(shame, I know) and they have threads just on camping at FW. So I did some researched and couldn't find any one this site. So I thought I would start one. We are going to FW for the first time in Oct. We are taking our 32' toyhauler and plan on spending 9 days of fun there. I thought it would be nice to hear other people's experiences, comments, or opinions on camping there. Any good suggestions are welcome! There has gotta be some campers out there.

I've been camping at FW many times. A few thoughts -

1) Check out the sing along with Chip and Dale and the outdoor movie. This is one of my favorite things at FW.

2) The boat service is really nice. There is one that goes between MK, WL, and FW and another that goes to the Contemporary (I don't remember of the top of my head if it goes anywhere else).

3) I like the walk between WL and FW. Its about a mile each way.

4) The beach is a good spot to catch the Electrical water pageant and you can see Wishes.

5) The Meadow Trading Post (in the middle of the campground) has better stuff than the trading post next to the marina.

6) There's a ton of stuff to do at FW. I was just thinking about it and decided to post this link to the allears page

http://www.allearsnet.com/acc/faq_fw.htm

We just joined DVC and bought points resale at VWL. One of the reasons was
that we would have easy access to FW and all of its amenities!

7) Walk around and check out some of the campsites. There are some who have essentially made FW their permanent or seasonal home and they will have their site well decorated landscaped. I chit chatted with two different groups who were camping at FW for 3-6 months on my last visit.

8) FW features what may be the cleanest campground restrooms on the planet. Plus, I found out this winter that they are heated. Between the men's and women's room there is a laundry room. These are high use and they clean your clothes fast. Be ready to have your clothes taken out of the washing/drying machine and randomly piled hither and thither if you're not going to sit with them. I forgot to note that rest/laundry rooms are shared by two loops, so you should never have far to walk to the nearest one.

I have stayed at Fort Wilderness several times and love the place. It's sometimes a challange to get into your camp site due to the not so wide roads in each loop. Then backing a 30 foot camper into a narrow slot takes some time also. On my last visit I had to ask my neighbor across from me to kindly move his truck so I could pull across his site to get backed into mine. But all in all Fort Wilderness is my favorite camping place. Try the bass fishing along the spillway at Bay Lake, and walk the trail between Wilderness Lodge and the campground to see alot of deer and other wild life. Have a great time.

I've never seen any security of any kind there. It's free. There are concessions sold at the back and you can make your own s'mores. etc. in the campfire they have up front.

do you have to have rvs or can you stay in your own tents

Good question. When I was Jr. High/High school age we tent camped at FW about a half dozen times (this was 20-25 years ago). On my most recent trip there didn't seem to be a place for tent camping on the map and I meant to ask a CM about it, but I forgot. I scanned allears and didn't see tent camping mentioned, so I'm not sure? (How's that for a long I don't know!)

Yes you can stay in a tent...the 2000 loops is for that and a few others...
Its not expensive for a site either if you are doing a tent or bringing a pop up.

It's open to anyone staying anywhere on-property. Even then, I don't know if they'd try to ID who is or isn't staying onsite, in case you were staying at a nearby Motel 6 or something. I just guess mmost people not staying onsite don't know about it.

Not only can you tent camp but you can rent a tent for an extra fee! We did this a couple of years ago for our older kids, meanwhile we roughed it in a cabin. It is great when you fly into Orlando and don't have to pack all the camping stuff to take with you. They set up the tents and take them down for you, what a deal! We even rented c.o.t.s. (to sleep on), it was perfect.
