Buying a scanner....

I am looking to purchase a flatbed scanner soon. I have to buy it at Staples because I have a gift certificate thingy there... Anyway...

I need a flatbed scanner that is at most $300. I cannot go over that, and $200 - $250 is about the range... (But basically, anything from $0 to $300). Anyway, I need a scanner under $300 that has good compatibility with Dell computers. I had purchased a scanner previously but had to return it because it JUST WOULD NOT WORK with my Dell computer. ('Twas the HP 4570c) The scanner should be able to scan negatives (from cameras (35mm)) and I would prefer it to be 8.5" x 14". However, I know that 8.5" x 14" size scanners are expensive, so I will settle for one that is 8.5" x 11". I am looking to scan photos, photo negatives, original artwork, documents (like WDW park maps, brochures, etc.), etc. The included software should be able to work flawlessly on the computer... I would also prefer a scanner that works on the USB 2.0 interface, although I will accept one on USB 1.1.

I already have a printer so I don't need a multifunction.

Does anybody have a scanner or know of a scanner that fits this description?

What brand name scanner (HP, Canon, etc.) is best?

Please go to http://www.staples.com and see if the scannner that you would recommend is available. If it is, please respond to this message with its model number.

I thank all of you who can give me recommendations as I seek to purchase a scanner.

THANKS! :)

Well, i have an HP Scanjet 5470c with slide adapter. Its a flatbed and does everythign well except scannign negatives and slides - Too much loss of detail in shadowy areas.

Its USB 2.0. Works like a champ for the most part. TWAIN32 compatible w/ photoshop. Max area appears to be 8.5 x 11.

I'd give it a thumbs up on overall, general use.

I don´t have a scanner anymore, but I´d like to know what the USB 2.0 or 1.1 are. How do I know which one I have on my digital camera and the USB port I have on my laptop? I didn´t know there were different kinds. :o
Thanks! :D

I believe they are backwards-compatible... The only thing is you have to use the right USB version cord between the USB ports...

If your USB devices are relatively new (i.e. less than 2 years) they might be 2.0 whilst the older and common USB 1.1 come from before that.

But then again, trust me, I am no computer, computer peripheral, and USB expert!

Hope that helps...:)

BTW - here is the website you can take a look at to see if the product you recommend is available:

Wierd...I've been looking for a scanner (for negatives) too. I've been doing some research and have been looking at Cnet and Zdnet's reviews. They both given decent scores the Epson models. If there's one model that you shouldn't look at it's the HP 5500c scanner. I heard the equipment just doesn't work, per customer reviews. Double check additional reviews at epinions.com . good luck finding your new scanner :)
