Bus Fire- Magic Kingdom

.....well I hope everyone is ok. Was their any property damage from the fire or just to the bus? No pictures ever surfaced? Theres just something about a photo of a really good fire going, as long as you know theres no one inside.

And while we are on the topic of "lets hate on the disney busses for a couple days"

Anyone ever sit in the back of the bus on a very hot day above the wheel well? If you lean on it, it is VERY hot, and its not like somethig you would go out of your way to do. Im an average size person around six feet tall and I cant fit in that seat without having to contort myself into a position so as Im not leaning on it. And I dont mean like its kinda uncomfortable hot, I mean If for some reason I was dumb enough to leave my leg leaning on it I would recieve a burn.

Disney buses are going downhill it's really sad . Didn't a bus run over a little boy last month??

And on what do you base that statement? I tend to believe Monorail Red who has been in Disney transit. And, the National Fire Prevention Association keeps statistics and on average there are 2210 bus fires reported to police or fire departments annually in the US. That's about 6 per day. Not that uncommon so with it's large fleet running as many hours of operation as they do, a fire incident is not unexpected. You will have a certain number of incidents when running a bus fleet, especially in an area twice the size of Manhattan Island.

As to the incident of the boy, the only one I remember hearing about was last year and police determined that the boy ran into the side of the bus on a bike that had several things wrong with it. They did not blame the bus driver or Disney.

There really is no evidence of Disney buses going downhill.

Evil Disney strikes again, ________ Meg Crofton ________!

All kidding aside it was an accident, accidents happen stop making sound like Disney Burned a bus on purpose. Preventative maintenance doesn't stop everything from happening. Lets all move on and just be glad no one was hurt.

Are you guys sure Mears doesn't own and operate the Disney bus system? I thought that was the case.

If they only have DME then maybe they should take over. I've never heard of DME exploding, running over anyone or crashing.

One just needs to look at the safety record under Meg Crofton's watch

I'm sorry, but this statement just really makes no sense. With all that goes on in Disney between attractions, recreation, transportation, etc...they would tend to be a risk analysts nightmare. Regardless of whether you like the woman on a creative or budgetary level, there comes a point where statements like this are just negative for the sake of negative. Have you sat and compared the accident rates during her tenure with those of Al Weiss and those that came before him? Have you taken into account how much the resort has grown to back a statement up such as that?

Thank you for your trolly input.

In no way is this a factual sign of lack of maintenance. Bus fires happen...a lot. They happen around here, and Indianapolis runs a very fine city bus. Our local school district has school bus fires, and their transportation budget is bigger than many schools' operating budgets.

With a vehicle that has a million miles on it, the only way to almost completely prevent things from happening is to tear the entire vehicle down, inspect every part, replace bad ones, and re-build it. With hundreds of buses in a fleet, that's not feasible. Nor is it economical.

The fact that a Disney bus has a fire this seldom is simply amazing. If the driver and other CMs did what they were supposed to do, and protected guests from the incident, then that's all that matters.

Mears currently only runs the DME buses. All others are run by Disney although I am not 100% sure about the DCL buses.

A DME bus was involved in a crash last February. Just like any other form of transportation there will be accidents. When you compare Disney's transportation safety numbers against other cities, Disney's record is incredibly good.

Again, you are mistaken. The FIRE WALL does not protect from fire. There are no burn standards that must be meant. It is called that because it USED to keep fire out of the passenger cabins...mostly in cars built before 1940. The coatings are only required to not burn and cause noxious fumes. They tend to delay the fire, but there is no requirement.
Neutralizes fuel? Not on cars, trucks or buses. There have been attempts to prevent jet fuel from being very combustible, but if you've ever seen the films of the crash tests, they weren't very successful. There just isn't a chemical you could add to fuel fast enough to stop it from burning. The best bet is to fortify the fuel storage and supply system...but, things tend to work "loose" after millions of vibrations. MINOR engineering errors often cost lives.:hammer:

It was OJs fault......

Every vehicle on property runs a bio fuel, with the older RTS buses being one of the few exceptions because their motors can't handle that type of fuel. They get a good amount of their bio fuel from the used cooking oil across property.

Recycled cooking oil....now THAT is cool!
Thanks for the insight.

Out of curiosity, why is that an exception? Do you think guests not in the "know", differentiate ME as not being Disney?

That's one thing I don't like about ME. No offense to anyone here, but I've never had a driver who spoke proper English, and can't understand half of what they're saying. That and the fact that there's a sign basically telling you to tip the driver.

I knew from the get-go (or, rather, had a strong inkling) that DME was not Disney (well, the big yellow Mears busses were also a bit of a giveaway!). But one time we were going from the airport to Disney and the driver told some stupid (bordered on off-color) joke. Definitely not something a Disney CM might do.

Oh, and come to think of it, as we were heading to the Disney resort, on the other side of the highway was another DME buss... on fire.

Funny story about this...

When we were at Columbia Harbor House in August, a girl working the upstairs condiment station (an obvious CPer) asked us out of nowhere if we'd ridden the steam ship.

I was caught a little off guard, but replied with, "Yeah....but not this trip." Her response was, "Oh. That's cool. I've never ridden it but I see it from here a lot. Did you know that it runs on the oil from this restaurant? It's funny that I know that about the boat but I've never been on it."

I'm honestly not sure how I reacted or responded. But I'm pretty sure my wife was ready to kick me if I snickered or giggled.

I know accidents can and do happen everywhere... even at WDW.

Since the Monorail and bus have already been done...One question I have for all is which do you think will be next and closeout the triple transportation whammie??? A watercraft accident (the little racers don't count), a tram accident, or a ride accident?
