Building a Contemporary DVC

North Garden Wing is going to be demolished. If it were going to be refurbished, it would've been done at the same time as the Tower and South Garden. You can't argue asbestos either because the north & south were built the same time as the tower, and with the same materials. Without talking to any of the BVCC guys, I'm assuming they're stripping the asbestos in the building so when it's demolished, none of it becomes airborne. There are guests around, you know....

While I'm not going to toss the ball in either court definitively (although I think the NGW will probably end up being fully refurbished, including structural work and hazmat removal), I will say that your reasoning isn't particularly strong in this case. Having the entire resort undergo renovation simultaneously would be a poor decision- at least financially speaking. The more projects you have going, the more resources (notably including workers) you will need- and this cost rises exponentially. This probably would explain the few month rennovation-edge that the SGW had over the tower. When most resorts in the industry undergo a major rehabilitation, they do so in phases, so as to minimize the financial burden and amount of resources that has to be retained at any one time.

In either case, I think it's safe to say that Disney will probably not announce the Contemporary DVC until at least 2008-2009, if at all. This provides all the more justification for a refurbishment. Shutting down a third of the resort for two years, with on-property occupancy higher then ever, is simply a foolish thing to do. Any money spent refurbishing the wing and demolishing it later will likely easily be made back (and them some) in stays made during the interim period.

Not that earth-shattering, but it is worth noting that since the South Garden Wing was renovated, it no longer has the "Contemporary South" sign over its entrance.

The Thea I know is VERY nice, plesant person that's concerned with preserving the integrity of the resort. She's one of the main reasons we still have the Mary Blair murals intact.

Well, I'm glad you think so. When I worked there, she cruised the front desk maybe once a month and it was a HUGE deal when she came down there, which working where I do now seems odd since our GM visits the front desk daily (if not more frequently) and knows each associate by name. I didn't get that vibe from her. She always seemed to be in a huge hurry. But, again, I'm glad you find her to be nice and have a pleasant working environment to go to every day.

Like which ones. I don't know of any resort that got as far as concept art and water permits for the construction offices and then never got built. I'd like to know what you're referring to.

Eagle Pines was officially announced.

I'm not saying that they aren't going to build a dvc at cont., I'm just saying.

Why doesnt someone just call the contemporary and see whats going on? It would be a whole lot easier that all the speculation.

Until the company officially announces it, anyone who you could reliably ask about the project wont be able to say anything.

When you call the "Contemporary" (even hit the front desk button on your guest room phone) you aren't calling them. You're calling a call center that is offsite and answering calls for other properties as well. They won't have the answer that you are looking for b/c at this point-everything is speculation to them as well.

So fishing guides are more trustworthy than bus drivers?

Yes. But they are slightly below monorail pilots in the rumor/grapevine pecking order. :animwink:

I'm guessing it's DVC coming. It's going to take a while to demo the NGW buildings and get the new building up and built. A 2008-2009 time frame doesn't sound unreasonable for that.

And we do, for the record, believe attractions hosts who work within 10 yards of a constuction wall. They were right about SSE's work progressing, as within days the rehab walls moved outward, as a recent example.

My source of info is firsthand experience, and the person in charge of coordinating the rehab of the Contemporary resort with Buena Vista Construction Company. His job was officially eliminated in September (he moved to Guest Relations afterward).

The room numbers from the North Garden (all the 7000's and 8000's) have been COMPLETLEY removed from our and central reservation's systems (never happened during the rest of the rehab). If any rehab had begun on the North, there would've been rooms there coming back on to sell already. They have absolutely NO reason to close the entire building at once for the kind of rehab that was done to the rest of the resort. When they were refurbing the South, (and the Tower for that matter) there would be rooms in one section on the bottom floor that were finished being refurbed, second floor that were being worked on, and top floor that hadn't been touched. You don't fence off half of the parking lot for something like that. NGB has essentially been quarantined.

I also had to help remove all of Front Desk & Bell Service's items out of storage in the North and move them over to the South Garden, while South Garden was still under rehab. Now tell me, WHY would we move items from a storage room in a building that hasn't been touched, into a building that was then in the process of being refurbished?

Consider the extensive site prep work that will have to be done for any new building going into that site. Sight lines have to be observed. Local ecology has to be taken into mind. Ground prep has to be done. That takes a lot of time, putting it in line with the 2008-09 time line you're suggesting.

You know, I can argue this with people that are on the outside until I'm purple in the face as the jackets on the front desk. I could just let this go and see where all the wild speculation goes. I'm honestly just trying to be informative. I personally would've LOVED to have kept the resort buildings the same as they were when it was opened. I don't like the idea of DVC being there, or the idea of another 15 story building being built beside the existing Tower. Knowing what I know, I swear, if North Garden Building isn't rubble by at least February, I'll eat my nametag, and you can hold me to that.

Like you said, it's useless arguing with some of these people. No matter how much proof you give them, they still won't believe it. Those who know anything, know DVC is coming.

I'll believe it when I get confirmation from The Disney Company itself, not some half baked rumors coming from Hopeful DVC members.
In the mean time answer these questions to my satisfaction and I may just see it your way...but I'm willing to bet you can't.

1) If Disney was going to demolish the North Garden wing buildings, why did they just install new carpeting and wallpaper in the hallways less than a year ago in the NGW?

2) If Disney was going to demolish the North Garden wing buildings, why hasn't any beds, lamps, sinks, toilets, dressers, tables, or TV's been removed? If I was going to demolish a building, the FIRST thing I would do is get this stuff out to get it out of my way.

3) If Disney was going to demolish the North Garden wing buildings, why would they put 6 port a potties right up against the building itself?

I'll be staying at The Contemporary Resort in 3 weeks and I'm going to do some snooping around. Hopefully I'll get a chance to talk to the workers themselves. We all know that the Resort castmembers themselves are told very little as to what goes on around them.

In the mean time, as I said before, I talked to the Disney customer service people on the phone last week and they assured me that this is just a rehab and call me crazy...but I'll believe them over some unverified rumors every time.

Scooter.. you're silly.

1. When did they install new carpet and wallpaper in the North Garden wing? I don't recall that happening. The South Wing got new stuff when it got refurbished. I took photos of the South Wing's new carpet.

2. Have you been inside and seen the furniture? We don't know what is inside there right now. It could be completely gone. If it was being refurbished, it'd be going away anyways too, so your theory wouldn't hold water either way. None of the regular room furniture is included in a refurbished Contemporary resort room which exists in the Tower or South Wing at this point - it would all need to be scrapped.

3. Because it's a short building - they're not going to implode it. They very well may begin by stripping away part of the building or retrofitting parts of it. Some rumors suggest they intend to maintain certain physical parts of the building, but for the mostpart, it's going to change.

1) I dont recall the new carpet/wallpaper.

2) With the exception of maybe the tvs would it not make sense to save labor and just demo the furnature at the same time as the building?

3) Wouldnt the laborers removing the hazardous stuff need toilets if the water to the building was off?

Half baked rumors? You're not paying attention.....and for the record, most of us have made it clear we're not "hopeful DVC members." We just see the facts and accept them. ;)

I stayed in the Contemporary North Garden wing a year a go last May when the carpet was being replaced.
I even managed to get a piece of the old carpeting for a souvenir.
You should have seen the look on the carpet installers face when I asked for it.
