Oh they can move him, they'll just have to eat a ton of salary. Sort of like when the Red Sox traded Beckett, Crawford, Gonzalez to the Dodgers in 2012.
Unless they eat nearly all of his salary, the market for a 1B/DH with declining numbers (and ones not likely to get better as the years pass) will be relatively thin. But stranger things have happened, I suppose....

Yeah, but I don't see the Dodgers calling for Howard. If he was on the open market, he would have a tough time getting a 1 year $5 million contract.

The Phillies best chance at salary relief is coming with a good package of prospects for Hamels or a taker for Lee. Honestly, the Red Sox are a decent fit for both.

If they want him gone bad enough they will, but it depends if they are willing to do that. I'm sure talk will heat up on the subject at the Winter meetings in a few weeks.

And they have the system to absorb a deal for the former. The latter however, meh....

Yep, i'd love to see Lee come to the Sox and they certainly have the prospects to make a deal happen.

Lee's contract might as well be for $37.5 million this year though ($25 million contract, $12.5 million buyout or $27.5 option). I really like Lee, but he's a tough sell at 2/$52.5 or 1/$37.5.

I would expect the Red Sox to make a push for Hamels.

Hamels hasn't been an ace in years though, so that really just doesn't get me excited at all as a fan. Kind of depressed. Seems like something TDO would do.

Last I heard, the Astros and Nats had submitted a proposal for a new facility on the east coast. If that was accepted, Mets would be locked into Port St. Lucie until the end of the lease. As a long time mets fan, I've been hoping for a while for a way to get the mets into Wide world of Sports. But it seems like east coast spring training may try to cling to what little life it has left for another decade or so if the Nats and Astros sign that deal to train in West Palm Beach.

that is true. http://metsblog.com/metsblog/astros-and-nationals-on-clock-for-move-closer-to-st-lucie/<--- good update from my good friend matt cerrone there. there was talk the mets could share PSL with the astros, too, but i think that died on the vine.

i agree, i think the east coast will keep clinging, but i wouldn't be shocked if they can't get something done with the 'stros and nats. teams like the mets, cardinals, and marlins are really at a disadvantage right now because of how much they have to travel during the spring and how often they see divisional opponents (the mets play the braves, nats, and marlins almost every single day).

for what it's worth, my parents live in sarasota and went through the whole reds/orioles swap at ed smith. when the reds were there before arizona cut them a sweetheart deal, it was pretty run down, but when the o's came in, they got some nice funding (because, let's face it, these stadiums in a lot of these florida towns are a primary source of tourism income. trust me, there's nothing in port st. lucie but tradition field and a duffy's bowling alley/bar) and really made the park gorgeous. there may be some good deals to be had in florida for a team with a big northern draw like the mets. we shall see.

also, let me chime in: no, the phillies won't be able to bail out of that howard deal. anyone who takes any percentage of that contract is nuts.

The Sox won the World Series in 2013, unless you're a Giants fan, that trumps any and all arguments.

You also have to admit that the Papelbon and Howard contracts are downright awful.

Hey you insulted my team after finishing two games behind it in 2014. Dont start going back and trying to dance around it. Yes my team sucks but Boston, yeah, they werent any better this year.

Yes those contracts are awful, both will be traded and Amaro will have to eat a lot of $.

I live in south Georgia....as much as I love the Ted, it will be nice to not have to drive so far to the hotel. Also having my car broken into last season...maybe Cobb county will be a better neighborhood?

As for spring training, I have never been, plan on going this year!
South Georgia, that means the "Florida" panhandle!

You see, this type of terminology is vague at best. "Weren't any better" than a team of twelve year old girls with severe Retinitis Pigmentosa? I think not.

The Phillies finished 73-89 and the Red Sox finished 71-91.

So specifically your team sucked two games worse than my team did.

And unless your name is Ken Casey, I'm done with this conversation.

I am fully aware of the mess that was the 2014 Red Sox. I was kidding with you, but I failed. Just adding light to heavy.

At least you have hope.
The Sox reorganized a few times in the 2000's and won big. I believe that the Phillies require the same type of young/veteran ratio type of retooling, but I also think that new ownership would help them to flush the system more effectively.

Front office might be a better idea…

I know all about the Red Sox ownership situation. I'm friends with one of the former owners as it turns out

I saw the problem with the Phillies (and the Sox) from the start of the season. They relied on a formula that had gone dead, between their veterans and the young guys that were placed on the team. Flushing the front office (OK, I always aim at owners) would help them to see things differently than they have been.

Look the Red Sox are big Sabermetrics fans mainly because Henry is a numbers guy, That being said you can have all the right guys from a Sabermetrics standpoint BUT the chemistry never develops then you get a failed team like the 'Sox were this year because in the end baseball IS a team sport and you need an effective team to win.

They won in 2014 so you really can't talk too much.
