They're not that bad, seems to me that years ago there used to be a lot more metal to them, did they used to band all of the front teeth? I remember people referring to them as "train tracks".

Many, many years ago they did used to band all the teeth. I think you are probably remembering larger brackets though. They have become smaller and smaller as the cements have become stronger. Even mine were quite a bit larger than the ones they have now, and that's only going back 11 years.

One thing I have noticed with clear brackets is that they tend to stain somewhat depending on the person's diet. I notice it more on adults though so I would guess that coffee and tea are the main culprits.

Maria......my Boss, the Orthodontist, would only order extractions of all of the 2nd biscuspids, to make space to move teeth around. That was usually enough space.

I have all four of my wisdom teeth, since they were not impacted and grew out straight.

The only problem I have with brackets, is that the teeth have to be etched with an acid material to help the adhesion of the bonding material and the bracket.

I think that´s what they did with me, but when they pulled my teeth in, I still have some little space left, and I honestly think that it could have been ok even if he didn´t take them out. *sigh*

I hate Braces, retainers, ect. I think the worse things you can get are the molds taken They make you gag and paletal expanders they hurt sooooo bad! I remember that one time i had to take a mold and there was a big glob that was dangling right above my throat, it was the worse.

Fine now...but the retainer is to prevent them from moving back later. If you can still get it in there, you might want to wear it.

id rather not..i feel like im choking when i wear them..i'll pass..im a bad kid, what can i say

Camelot,

Is that the same type of etchant we use for bonding and sealants?

Katherine...I used to do the lab work at the Othodontists' office, so I would make retainers and palatal expanders for our patients (welded the expander onto molar bands for seating and embed the expander in acrylic) The poor patient who had to wear the expanders, really had my sympathy.

Erika...I'm not sure if it's the same etchant...I have been out of this profession for 17 years, but it may be.

It's just a guess but it's probably improved since then. I've only been doing this for 9 years and it's amazing how quickly this profession changes! It's kinda like dog years

I think it's incredible, my kids have never once complained about going to the dentist, it's become almost a pain-free experience!

I hate my teeth, lol. They were fine, but then my dentist noticed that I shouldn't have baby teeth when I'm 14. So, 2 days before my birthday, I had 8 teeth pulled. Then, on my brithday, which was the same day as Ozzfest, I had an allergic reaction to the painkillers, which I had the night before. Needless to say...I didn't have that great of a birthday, lol. I still went...but I felt like crap, hehe.
Now I'm gettin braces, because the new teeth that are growing in, are growing in crooked. But my parents are actually considering invisalign, or whatever the invisible, molded, removable ones are called. I will LOVE them if they do that, lol.

*Sigh*

I got them put on april of '01. I was 13 at the time. They'll be off by the end of next month :D :D :D :D :D :D

It gets exponentially worse as the experiance continues, but the pain goes away after a few days....

how long have you had them for? I've only seen the commercials for them, can you take them in & out like a retainer (even though I imagine you are supposed to wear them 24hrs)?

I've had them for just over 2 months. I had regular braces when I was younger, but my wisdom teeth caused some major crowding, so I got the invisaligns. They're a lot like a retainer. I take them out (very discreetly.. it's kinda gross to do that in public.. like pulling out false teeth) to eat, and when the occasion calls for it. You can barely tell that they're there.. only when the light hits them right, or if you stare long enough. They're cheap though... I'm paying $130/month out of pocket, rather than $60/month for regular braces.

that is so cool, what a great alternative, especially for adults

They kind of remind me of contacts, for some reason. and I haven't had very much luck with contacts lately, so I don't know what to think, hehe.

*sings*

I just got my braces off... I just got my braces off!

hehe...

I had them for 4 years and they weren't that bad. Tell your daughter to not worry about it so much. She can always talk to me about them!
