I had braces for about five years. They weren't as bad as they were made out to be. Now everyones got braces so it's not at all that bad. It's not like your singled out. The retainer was the part I didn't like...I never wore it. :D

Ditto! I had to wear them for a 4 years, but hey my teeth sure as heck look a LOT better than before! The only things that I can really remember are the molds that they made of my teeth. I'd constantly gag on it. I was cold, mushy and down my throat...I'd have to hold back from puking :hurl: . Then there was the time when I got to take them off. I was pretty happy they were coming off but it was kinda freaky! They'd get these pliers and break them off, eek! It's feels really weird to have someone pull on your tooth! Well those are my fond memories of having braces...from getting them on, trying to floss with them, the tightenings, and not being able to eat certain foods (esp corn). :)

I got mine taken off two years ago. Mind you I was in my mid twenties when I had them. I can just imagine what the interviewers thought when they saw this newly graduated engineer wearing braces. It wasn't bad. Tell her it could be worse. It was weird being an adult with them.

I never paid any attention to the list of food you weren't supposed to eat with the braces on. So long as you brush well and floss there's nothing to worry about. I did lose one of the rear braces once though...the one that wraps around your back tooth. I also broke off a front one too....but thats when I had elastics in the front...they just didnt secure it properly. Don't let them fool you into thinking gum does it!

FYI they have this cool floss thats sort of thick and fuzzy and it has hard long tips so you can get it through yout teeth with the braces. Worked grat for me. :)

I wore braces for 2 years in middle school. Got them off the day AFTER I had my school picture taken freshman year of high school. Stupid school wouldn't let me have a retake. I had to learn to play the clarinet with them on which sucked. I've worn my retainer ever since I got it 5 years ago and my teeth are still perfectly straight.

When you are sitting at the lunch table with all your friends and you smile with a big wad of bread/corn/candy in your brackets, that's something to worry about!

That's called Superfloss. We give it away at our office. Good stuff!

I just got mine off a year ago, I wore them for 5 yrs and I'm now 31. I pretty much ate anything I wanted too though while I had mine on. It used to really ache when I would go to have them tightened once a month though.

Unfortunately, I am almost thirty years old and I still have one year left on my braces. I had them put on when my daughter had hers put on. It is so funny the reactions that we get. We took a lot of pictures together.:p But, in the end I will be very happy. I always hated my teeth. So I decided to do something about it.

Still makes it funny as H***:D

I had the clear braces and they were not too noticeable. The only thing that you'd really see is the thin wire going across the teeth.

Have you guys heard of that new Invisalign? There no gluing or pulling or wires. It looks something close to a retainer and it's pretty close to invisible. I wonder how well it REALLY works.

I have seen the commercial on TV for Invisalign. It's sure a far cry from what was available when I got my braces many years ago.

I worked for an Orthodontist for 11 years when I was younger. One of the employee benefits, was that after working there for 3 years, the dentist would straighten your teeth. This was great, since my upper left central and lateral teeth were both terribly crooked. It required that I have one of my upper right bicuspids extracted, to make space to realign the teeth up there. The bottom just needed some general realignment.

We used metal braces only, back then. The new bonding metal, plastic and ceramic brackets were just coming out. My boss was set in his ways and took a long time to start with the new trends. He only used the brackets on certain cases, to try them out.

I remember those days after an "adjustment".

OOLALA...that hurt :dazzle:

I'm pretty sure it works only for very minor adjustments.

braces..what annoying lil boogers. I had mine from 3rd to 5th grade. Yep I was an early kid. I was born with 6 extra teeth so i had to get them all pulled when i was 8 and a few weeks later the braces went on. I was aloud to eat anything i wanted except taffy, which was ok cause I dont like taffy. Corn on the cob was def. a killer. I avioded that for 3 yrs. I was also lucky because i didnt need to get my braces tightened..They tightened themselves. I really lucked out..I think beacuse i was soo young they tried to make it as easy as possible. I remember I was at the movies with my friends and I had my rubber bands in. I yawned and the band flung out and hit a blad guy in the head! I felt soooo Bad! I hope he didn't think i was a lil Hooligan! lol. When i went for a follow up appointment after i got my braces off my greek dentist said i had "the smile of a greek godess!" lol and i was 10 and I smartly replied.."but I'm Irish!" lol Braces turned out to be a great thing ..i ALWAYS get complimented on my smile..its really nice!

To make the Braces thing go by as quickly as possible, follow everything as your Orthodontist says and b4 ya know it the braces will be off. I'm suppose to wear my retainer at night..I gave that up after a year and im suppose to wear it until im 16, but my teeth are fine. Much luck to your daughter and im sure shes still beautiful!

Actually Erika, according to a web site I checked out, some of the sample patients they showed, had more than minor adjustments necessary.

It just took more aligners and more treatment time, in those cases. :)

Fine now...but the retainer is to prevent them from moving back later. If you can still get it in there, you might want to wear it.

That's interesting!

The orthodontists we refer to don't seem impressed by them at all. Maybe that will change down the road. We shall see!

I am wondering about that treatment time. It would seem that it would take years and years to fix a major problem. But that is just what my boss and I have guessed. We don't know for sure, because we don't do that stuff anyway.

well, so far so good... the soreness from her mouth seems to be gone, and she is in a much better mood!!

tomorrow is picture day at school, she is going to give a big smile and let the braces show. she did pick the clear elastics for this time though, after the next visit she might go with something in a more funky color. They make them seem a lot more fun these days.

They're not that bad, seems to me that years ago there used to be a lot more metal to them, did they used to band all of the front teeth? I remember people referring to them as "train tracks".

I also wore braces as a young adult (18), I can vouch for the importance of wearing the retainer. It's a lot of money to spend to end up having your teeth start shifting back later on.

First, I had surgery on my gums when I was 13, to take off the little piece of skin between your upper lip and your teeth because mine was separating my front teeth, to put them together. Then I wore a retainer -which I loved, it was clear!-.

Because I su cked my left thumb even before I was born and until the age of 12 (I just couldn´t be without it in my mouth, it tasted sooo good), my pallate is too deep (to make the mold, the dentist had to put double the amount of that paste) and my teeth started to get "out" of my mouth, so I had to wear brackets when the retainer didn´t work that well for that.

Stupid dentist took two mollars out because I "didn´t have space to pull them in again" and then I wore brackets when I was 17 for a year and half. Then to the retainer for 6 months, but since I loved it, I wore it for a year. hehe...

My teeth look fine now, but I still have spaces where he took my mollars out that were never filled (not too big, but still) and my teeth are not totally straight, but fair enough... It would have probably helped if I got my wisdom teeth out, but I never did... I only have two. *shrugs*

I did eat everything! Peanuts, gum, corn on the cob (I did that in Canada and was so ashamed.... big mistake that took me forever to clean!) I had the clear little rubber bands but they were a pain when I had to get new tighter ones... ouch...

I was thinking about geting brackets again... they look cool and I do want perfect teeth! I always wonder if they are going to get separated again and I panick! :animwink:
