Well I feel that alot of laws were put on the books to protect us from ourselves and that is why I feel that boxing should be banned.

That is my point exactly, that some laws have been drafted to protect us from ourselves and our own stupidity, look at seatbelt laws.

This is very sad, however, boxing is much safer than most sports. Take a look at the chart in the middle of this page:

http://members.tripod.com/teamrgb/newbie.htm

According to this chart, more injuries per 1000 participants occur in basketball, football, hockey, rugby, baseball, lacrosse and wrestling than boxing.

As someone who has done quite a bit of sparring (karate, not boxing), I can say that it is a very pure form of competition. Much more natural than most sports. It is a very invigorating experience, and the sensations experienced in a good fight are much more intense than any other sport I have ever played. It's like other sports . . . just more so. Rather than adding a lot of rules and devices, you just go at it, and get a more intense competitive experience in 30 seconds than you could get after a 30 inning baseball game.

I'm not a boxing spectator, and I've never entered any of those "tough man" competitions (though if I knew of one in my area, I probably would have given it a try when I was a bit younger).

I just think Boxing or other fighting sports are as valid as anything else out there, and there's no reason to ban them. If you're really concerned about safety, you should probably look at banning football first.

From the article:

Chuck Young said his wife, a mother of two, decided on the spur of the moment to compete after learning that the only woman who had signed up needed an opponent.

I don't think boxing as a professional sport is a problem. It is all these unregulated amatuer competitions that are so dangerous. Professional boxers, like all professional athletes, train extensivley and understand the dangers involved and how to protect against them. The bouts are also overseen by experienced, professional referees and a number of officials (including a doctor) provided by the licensing state.

This a tragic situation that should not be allowed to happen again anywhere. And I for one hope that there are criminal against the organizers of the event if they did not follow all the necessary precautions as proscribed by their state's boxin comission.

In nature it's called "natural selection". You can't regulate stupidity.

Also, seatbelt laws came from insurance companies lobbying congress. The law, albeit a good one, had nothing to do with saving lives. The insurance companies just wanted to cut down on the claims they had to pay out.

Read this yesterday in the Sentinal and it broke my heart.
Her husband fought and lost...thank god he didn't end up on life support, too. They waived the $50 fee because she didn't have the money. Now the whole thing is under investigation. Professionals know thay they can be killed, but I really don't think they fully explain this in this type of venue. How many people actually read a release all the way before they sign them.

Personally, I like professional boxing, but this sort of thing should be outlawed.

Here's an interesting article regarding sports deaths and injuries:

http://www.ncaa.org/news/1997/19970922/active/3433n12.html

An interesting quote from the article:

"The number of catastrophic injuries in football has been relatively low throughout the 1990s. In 1990, there were no fatalities directly related to the sport, the first time that had occurred since the football study was initiated in 1931."

Now this study only deals with high school and college, no pros. Kids are dieing every year playing football. Personally, I am a bit more troubled by the thought of a kid being killed than an adult who chooses to enter a fight competition.

Also take a look at the skiing statistics. I'd be willing to bet that skiing is much, much more dangerous than fighting, but there are 10 year old kids strapping on skis. You don't see many 10 year olds fighting in bars.

Fighting might seem scary to someone who's never done it, but there is one thing that makes fighting safer than a lot of things. When someone sees their opponent is seriously hurt, they stop. Gravity doesn't stop when it's bouncing some skier's head against the rocks.

Why would that woman volunteer to box? She doesn't look like she would be the boxing type.

At least three competitors have died in the past nine months, and some say the total number of deaths in the circuit's 24-year history is as high as nine. Several states have banned Toughman contests.
People have died and it just keeps happening.

Ok I said some things without thinking about it, sorry

I'm not sure what you edited out. I think I read your post pre-edit and it made sense to me. I think I'm the only nutcase here defending the pro-violence side.

I think I should point out, I'm not a big fan of these events. I've never even seen one, but I have thought it would be fun to participate.

I'm afraid if you start making these things illegal because they are dangerous, you fall into a trap. Anything that's fun has some danger to it. Remember, more people die at Disney World every year than die in "Tough Man" competitions.
