Booking rooms with points from 2 contracts

I called DVC to ask about this and amazingly the person I spoke to did not know the answer. I think he basically did not understand my question. He was friendly, almost overly friendly. But he had very little knowledge. So I will try the experts here which I should have done in the first place. Here goes:

I have two contracts for the same resort (SSR) with two different use years, one August and one September. The only negative I have found with having two contracts with different use years is let's say I want to book a week for 120 points. I have 90 points available on the one contract and 30 available on the second contract. I cannot combine those two amounts of points and book the room.

Now let me stop right here and say I understand that and I understand why I cannot do that and I am not asking them to change one of the use years because I know they won't do it. My question is IF they were the SAME use year, would I be then able to combine the 90 points from one and the 30 points from the other and book the 120 point vacation? All the person on the phone at DVC kept telling me is "I'm sorry but unfortunately we cannot change a use year for you". I said I know but you must have members who have two contracts at the SAME resort with the SAME use year, if I was one of those could I then book it?

Hopefully I have explained this thoroughly enough and someone on here will have an answer for me. Thanks very much!

If you make two purchases at the same resort with the same use year (and they are deeded EXACTLY the same) then DVC will put everything together in one contract. However, points are placed into use years when the resort begins to go on sale and contracts are sold accordingly. That is why there are times that you cannot get a certain use year and may have to go on a waitlist. So in order for you to be able to combine your points you would need to sell one contract and the repurchase points in a different use year when/if they become available.

I originally bought 150 points at SSR. 2 years later, I added an extra 25, still at SSR. Both have September Use Years. When I go on the DVC website and look at my points, it does not separate the two contracts; it says I have 175 points for any given use year, not a 150-point contract and a 25-point contract.

I know that doesn't "help" in the sense that it doesn't change your present situation, but I hope it answers your question.

Yes you have answered my question! Thank you Slappy!

I think Slappy answered the original question but this could be another solution. I believe your are allowed one transfer per year (per contract?) so (to use the OP example) couldn't they transfer the 30 points available from one contract to the other contract with 90 points remaining?

I don't know anything about transferring points, sounds interesting. Maybe someone will have more details. I'm afraid to call DVC since you never know what answer you may get! They often refer you to your sales rep, of which I have had about 5 in the last three years. I don't even know my current one. I bought both contracts resale.

Points can be transferred in or out of a contract once per year. So you could take the points from one of your contracts and transfer them to the other and that would use both contract transfers for a given year. HOWEVER, transferred points are supposed to remain exactly as they are. So points transferred from an Oct use year to a contract with a Sept use year should still have the same date restrictions in place. How well DVC keeps up with this after a transfer though is debatable.

It's also worth noting that banked and borrowed points CANNOT be transferred.

However points that have been transferred CAN be banked.

As DisneyInsider said, the letter of the law states you can only complete one transfer per contract, per year. However, DVC has been known to make exceptions to this policy when a single owner is transferring among his/her own contracts.

I know this is water under the bridge for OP but these transfer rules are the #1 reason why I rarely recommend owning multiple Use Years. Jumping on a low-priced resale contract may seem like a great idea at the time. But it can leave you struggling with 40-50 years worth of administrative headaches.

Even if it requires paying a couple dollars more per point or waiting longer for the right resale contract (same UY) to appear, I'd say both are worth it to keep the ownership as simple as possible.

It hasn't been too much of a headache so far (having two use years) but I do think you are giving good advice.
