I'd book prior to the 180 day mark in order make ADR's with the 180 +10 option.

I posed this question here months ago, and the answer I got, was in my opinion, some of the best WDW travel I ever received. Go ahead and book it now, and then just keep an extremely close watch on the discount offers. When they come out, just add them on. I went through so much stress wondering if that was the right thing to do, and once I did it, it was a huge relief.
After calling back a couple times to change some things, I was able to get the resort I wanted & added free dining as well. I couldn't be happier with the advice I was given.

Book now! Add discounts when they come out. This way you can start making payments on your room and be sure you get the resort you want.

It's rare that we book right when a discount comes out. Even if I intend to do room only (which I can switch to once discounts hit), I book as a package since the deposit is a flat $200 no matter what. So, since the deposit is the same either way and booking ahead of a discount ensures I get the 180+10 benefit...it seems most logical to book ahead of any discounts.

we always book when we know we are going then add the room discounts. we have never had to switch hotels (unless we chose too) or room category (again, unless we made that decision). Like @Trotsky said, if you know you are going, book. All you need is the deposit and you can make your ARDs when day 180 comes.

I can tell you that I called yesterday to find out the room only rate for February, and there are already a lot of rooms booked, I was looking for a room at the Beach Club, and only club level was available.

Good Morning! We are going to WDW in January 2014. Should I book our room or wait until discounts are released? If I book the room, can I apply possible discounts when they come out? Thanks for your help!
I always book it. If a discount comes along later I just call wdw and have them apply the discount.

We booked last week for our December trip hoping for a room discount or free dining! Our 180 days is this week! We may just use the pin code my older daughter just received in the mail since, she is coming with us this time! She is a lucky dog it's the third code she's received this year!!!

Book it now through a Disney TA. When the discounts come out, they will automatically apply them. That's the easiest way.
You can also book it now and then watch every day for discounts or wait until the discounts come out and then book...whatever works for you! (I'd go with a TA.)

No, you can't use someone else's pin but, we would cancel our ressies & have my daughter rebook since she is coming with us this time.
