Book Lovers

Okay everyone here knows I'm an English major, aka I love books. Well since I love books, and my mother loves books I am going to attend the LA Times book festival at UCLA this weekend *go me*.

I know most people here aren't in the area but if anyone is and wants to see who is going to be there and maybe even want to meet up for coffee or something let me know. You can find the LA Times author / events list on the LA times website or you can PM or IM me and I can send you the link .

I've been to the event for 2 years and I really enjoy it. I have tons of books signed because of this event, included a first edition copy of Hearbreaking Work of Staggering Genius and a children's book by Julie Andrews.

No problem.. usually it's really great. They even have a cooking stage. Lots of the chefs from the Food Network did demos and promoted their cook books at the festival last year which was cool (or so Ray thought, he bought a cookbook I didn't... which is odd cause he never cooks, I do LMAO).

Book Festival Day One

Today was Day One.. crazy day in my mind hehe.

Campus was wall to wall people. When I was walking the home the traffic was backed up all the way down for about half a mile at LEAST. But today was fun.

Lets see.. today I got signed books by:

Ray Bradbury
Meg Cabot
The Govenor of Cali's Wife (she has a children's book my mother wanted)
Terry Brooks

Lines were long, it was warm (with a breeze) and it was very fun.

Disappointments: John Wooden's line was out the door (with a limit on what he would sign) about an hour before the event started so I wasn't able to get him. Michael Crieton was the same story, I got to the tent and it was all the way wrapping around the back of the area, and it was an hour before he was scheduled to be there AND he was only signing for an hour so I wasn't able to get him either.

Tomorrow is more of a go through take in the atmosphere, get a few picture books signed for my mom's collection and relax day for me.

Hehe you sound like me .. I'm a bookaholic .. it's horrible.. :-D

um.. I got *thinks* Two copies of his latest signed (first editions) and a copy of his illustrated bio for my brother signed... hehe. I like getting First Editions whenever possible. We got Fahrenheit 451 last year and a copy of his children's book (also first edition). He has an exculsive type deal with Vagabond books and the people at that booth were really nice, one of them is looking at the stock tonight to see if they have a copy of one of the comics of his works signed for my brother.. *yay*. I think they have an online shop though... it specializes in rare out of print and signed editions.

Tomorrow? David Kirk (children's author of Mrs. Spider books), I might go by and get a few things from him for people I know. Mary Higgins Clark (that one's for my mom's best friend) and TONS of others...

I can't even think to remember who all is going to be there... lol. Actually I'm trying to decide if I want to go on the panel about the Media being biased tomorrow (Hey it's the journalist type person in me) or go to David Kirk's signing for my mom's friends... lol...

I have several six foot bookshelves that are overstuffed with books and piles and piles of books on the floor, too! My husband said we can make one wall of the office area of our house built-in bookcases to accommodate my collection. Smart thinking--otherwise we'll be buried in books.

Lets see, at home I have my book cases packed full plus piles of books that dont' have cases yet, not to mention all the books I have at school with me... and the ones in the book cases downstairs and all my old children's books I can't part with in the hallway book case... goodness I'm glad mom's a librarian and knows the value of a good book!! When I finally get my own place the majority of "stuff" I have to transport will be... books hehe.

Nicholas Sparks was there today and John Lithgow.. heard the latter reading his children's book and he was so great. I can't wait to go tomorrow and go to all the booths and get the freebees hehe (I already got the magazine's that Pages and Borders were handing out hehe).

The last time we moved, my mom said the movers got to my room when doing the estimate and said, "Wow. A lot of books. She must be very smart. And that's going to cost you a fortune to have us move."

My mom made me pack and move my own books.

Yeah I tend to pack my boxes with books too heavily since most of what I have are hardcovers (for the value and the fact that they last longer... and I usually don't want to wait to get the paperback version lol) so all the boxes were so heavy that I couldn't lift them. So I had to leave some of them behind in my bedroom which was upsetting to me since the ones I had to leave behind were the ones I wanted to reread... yes I reread my books cause I'm a dork and ... that's what I do.

Oh goodness maybe I should just get a librarian's degree like my mother and bedone with it...
