We have reservations for Boma on our next vacation in Septemer. This is one of the restaraunts that we have scheduled that we have never tried. I have read different reviews on Boma. I am a little scared, considering the fact that I am a picky eater. I would appreciate any opinions that are out there concerning Boma?? Do you think it is good food?

My family and I do prefer the breakfast there over the dinner. They do serve a lot of food that has an african flair to it. I do suggest that you check the menu ahead of time to see if it will be for you or not.

Good Luck!

I too am a very picky eater. Beef, chicken and pork are pretty much my staples. The first time I tried Boma, I was very apprehensive, but my dd wanted to eat there so I gave in. I loved it. There is such a variety, you should find something to make you happy.

For the picky eater I would suggest breakfast at Boma. There are only a few different dishes on the breakfast buffet while the rest is pretty normal.

There are a few things on the menu that are a little out there, but honestly, they'll have chicken, they'll have fish, they'll have some kind of beef on the carving station, they'll have salads and soups. Maybe the spices are a little more unique, but the basic ingredients will be things you've eaten thousands of times. And if worse comes to worst, the kids' table will have stuff like little pizzas or chicken fingers and very tasty mac and cheese.

And there's always dessert.

It depends on what you mean by "picky".

Slappy is correct, they do have a chicken dish, a fish dish, a beef dish...but like Akerhaus (or however one spells it) it's just the preparation and saturation of odd spices and sauces, etc., that took Boma off our repeat list.

I tend to not like my food gussied up, which is part of the issue. For instance, when I see someone eating mocha-chunk-blueberry-waltnut ice cream I think...mmm, I'd like some ice cream if it didn't have all that "crap in it" (my exact phrase LOL). I'm the same with pizza - there are few toppings I don't like (anchovies are pretty much it), but any more than 1 or 2 toppings and I just don't care for it. Green pepper and onion is fine, pepperoni is fine, ham is fine, pineapple is fine...but a pinapple green peper and onion pepperoni ham pizza grosses me out.

So that's why Boma doesn't work for me...I like simple foods, and comfort foods on vacation, and except for the kids menu they don't have a ton of that. I think I ate my weight in chicken fingers the last time I was there, and I felt like a dork going back up to the kids pod over and over LOL.

I'll echo others and tell you to check out the typical menu, in detail, and see what you think.

Boma is so yummy! My DD likes very plain foods, is pretty picky. She eats plain cheeseburgers, nothing fancy. She does like Boma though. It's fun to try new things there but also there are familiar items so to me it's the best of both worlds. I am a somewhat picky eater, too, and now thanks to Boma I like Salmon! And, gosh, if you never go you will miss out on zebra domes  ;) .

My brother, sister, and I are picky eaters and loved Boma. The food is delicious! Boma has both African inspired foods and American food (such as spaghetti and meatballs), so every one is satisfied.

I think the carving station is your friend in these situations, and get a spoon of every side, and taste them all. Like any of them? Go back and get more. You may be pleasantly surprised, and you will have had a new experience. Exploring is fun!

I have a very picky family and they all had wanted to try Boma. We finally did last March and it was wonderful. There is nothing there that is "weird", just the food we are used to eating , but with an African flair (spice wise...not hot, but exotic) and name wise. We all loved the chicken and ribs and many of the soups and side dishes.

Here is one of the menus (click here ), they have 3 main menus and most of the sides are the same. We really loved the Durban chicken, the ribs, nut crusted salmon and so many more dishes. They desserts were also great, especially the Zebra Domes and paw print brownies.

There are people at the buffet line to explain everything to you and to help you with your choices. There are plenty of "regular foods" to eat if you don't want to give the more exotic a try. We had a great time and will be going back in the future.

I did look at the menu again. I am excied about trying something new. Even though I am picky (I prefer simple, though), I will try almost anything. That is something that my husband is proud of. I am sure I will be able to find something that I like, especially with all the choices they have.
Thanks for everyone's input so far!

Good for you! Thats all I ask my kids, try one bite and see what you think.

Try the flank steak (they said it tasted like A1 marinade  ), ribs with the Coca Cola sauce, Kool slaai (if you like cole slaw :slurp: ) and maybe some of the soups (sausage & lentil is a bit spicy). Sweet potato pancakes or potatoes with Afritude would go nicely as well. All of these are fairly simple and not too exotic in flavorings.

Keep an open mind and you may just find a new favorite place to eat.

I had boma once, and i did not like it at all. If your a picky eater, the best thing to do is stick with the carving stations. I love to try new food, and i did try it, but this was food i was not into. Maybe it was the fact that everything i tried seemed to have curry in it, blah.

This was the place I couldn't wait to eat at as I had heard so much about it. I was very disappointed. I am picky but my husband isn't. We both had trouble finding things to eat and I ended up eating off the kids part of the buffet. I tried some things but just didn't like any of it. The chciken was not plain and I didn't enjoy the flavor of it. They did not have ribs when we were there. I loved the zebra domes but they are not worth using a dining credit for. I know this is not a popular opinion but that was my experience. I was glad to go see AKL and saw alot of animals at the lookout area so that was cool.

If you know you are very picky, and do not care for anything different, you may not want to chance it. If you really want to try something different and take a chance, go for it.

We love Boma and I think it is good and different, but not wildly so. I consider it to be more "American food with African flair" than "Exotic African food adjusted to American tastes" if that makes any sense. As mentioned, the menu is usually a beef, chicken, pork and fish (salmon) dish; several soups, salads, sides; kids items; and great deserts. FWIW.

No one in my family is picky at all about food. We tried Boma this past April for the first time. My family wasn't crazy about it. I didn't find it great and amazing like so many others. Seriously, it was just...ehhh...ok.... We probably won't eat there again. I did like the salmon and the desserts were very good, but like stated before, the desserts are not worth a TS credit.
