Boma vs Sci-Fi Cafe

Ok, So I know they are vastly different and they are more different than apples and kiwi, but looking for a recommendation. I am finishing out my itinerary for June trip. On my HS day I have one meal still undecided and it is between Boma or Sci-Fi. My family of 4 (WDW addicts) is traveling with another family of 5 that are not WDW veterans. I have stayed at Animal Kingdom Lodge and absolutely loved the atmosphere, but never ate at Boma. The family that we are going with has never seen AKL but has been to Wilderness. If you had to choose between Sci-Fi or Boma for a reservation, which would it be? This is not our last day, but middle of the week. I know the experience at Sci-Fi is really good, but have heard that the food is average. I have also heard that the food is good at Boma, but the experience is OK. Is the Boma experience worth enough to leave the wilderness area and make the trek with 9 to Boma? Background 5 adults and 4 Children which are 14,9,9,9. Thank you for your recommendations!

Our family was at both locations last week. We went to Boma for breakfast on our check out day at the AKL. We went to Sci-fi for dinner earlier in the week. As you suspect, two completely different experiences. My guess is the 4 kids, especially the 3 youngest ones would love Sci-fi. If you can preface a trip to Boma with the fact that they can go out to the savanna overlook and see the animals that might be enough to persuade them. We've found out that on our trips to Sci-fi just keep it simple with the food you order. We all had varying burger selections during this last visit, and we all thought they were quite good. I wouldn't go there with the intention of getting a steak. The breakfast at Boma was very good, we didn't have dinner there. About the only thing we didn't like about the restaurant as well as the entire lodge was that it was so dark pretty much everywhere you went. We prefer the openness and brightness of a place like French Quarter.

Boma dinner remains one of my favorite meals ever. And I definitely didn't find the atmosphere or experience to be lacking in any way. I think it depends where you want to be. If you're pretty much done with HS and have nothing to do for the rest of the evening, the trek to AKL will be worth it for more than just dinner at Boma. But travel can be a pain, whereas Sci-Fi is right there and definitely a cool place to be to kids. I found items like the burgers and sandwiches (and milkshakes) to be above average, really, and think that bigger plate items like ribs or steak are probably not the way to go, as @Herdman said.

Yes
Boma from a park would be better done from Animal Kingdom as there's a bus every 10 minutes. From Hollywood Studios count on an hour each way.

Thanks for the suggestions. Again I know it is almost opposite of the spectrum, but wanted to see what others would do if they had to pick. I am up in the air

While we prefer Sanaa over Boma for non-signature dining at AKL, I still think Boma is better food-wise over Sci Fi. We've eaten at Sci Fi a few times for the atmosphere, but the best things we've had there are burgers and shakes...and it's all still pretty mediocre.

I would definitely do Sci-Fi. Like you've said the atmosphere is fantastic and for the other family that hasn't been there before it will be very neat to see. The food may be mediocre but I would still choose it. Also, with Boma there are some very different foods on the buffet and some people have a simple palate and with the young kids you just don't know if they would eat strange looking food , so again the safe bet would be Sci-Fi. Plus I'm sure it will be cheaper.
