Bob Iger at WDW now ... BoD to Follow?

What is your source they are going to build Star Wars land. You in the Disney clouds again?

Bob Iger in over a decade at Disney has not invested in one attraction over at Disney. A place where i vacation every year, sometimes more than once a year. But lately, you see the parks going downhill, you see Iger himself cost cutting and removing attractions to save money (look at DHS, why are attractions being removed with nothing replacing them for over two years), the destruction of the original vision of Epcot with a cheap redo of the Maelestrom attraction. Talking of the Frozen attractions - a movie so massive that it's quite possibly the biggest phenomena since Star Wars itself, and what does Iger do? He rebrands a rather dull ride, lick of pain, few new cardboard cut outs and hey presto. Go check what Oriental Land Company are doing with Frozen at Tokyo. He has done nothing with the parks. Nothing to inject love, passion, and his own footprint.

Iger is a corporate CEO. His main goal is profit, nothing else. He doesn't give a rat if there are no new attractions, as long as the bottom column says profit. But it's a dangerous game, because eventually people will stop coming. But hey ho, Bob will be gone by them - and it will be the next CEO rushing in new attractions to save the parks.

The man is an utter disgrace to the parks. He's a movies man, and not done a single positive thing for the theme parks despite profits rollinh. People go on about the Fantasy Land expansion - are you have a laugh? All that achieved was more land space and a rather average coaster - and this took how long !?!!?! Look at the original designs for the expansion, and ask yourself who scaled back the plans? Iger a clever analyst who dare not invest in a single thing as it reduces profit for him and his corporate suits.

Who is responsible for no new attractions? Iger.

There has never been a CEO in Disney's history who has single handedly damaged the parks like Iger. You have visionaries in life - Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, Speilberg, etc who love their art and work with passion. Then you have a man like Iger who passion is profit and the dollar. To hell with any vision or a chance to leave some artistic merit on the parks.

Disney as a corporation risk everything if they ever hire a corporate CEO again who just doesn't get theme parks.

That's why i am angry with him, and can't wait for him to leave.

Carsland.... avatar.... Dropping a meet and greet and adding mine train... Repair and make Main Street look good.... He may not have done enough but the tide is turning. A CEO job and one it appears you will never have is to balance all aspects of the business. Parks was not hurting and was a money train he invested in other avenues. Now he is going to spend additional money and your whining.

Sad man. Really sad.

And Iger has caused the desperate need for a redo at DHS and it appears that he is now doing it.

Here is the unintentional silver lining. We will most likely end up with a better park when this is complete than we would have if they had been plussing all along. Certainly we will get more layout changes and reworked traffic flow problem areas that would not have been addressed with a less thorough rebuild.

I also think we will be getting more than just TSPL, Cars something, and Star Wars. By the time Star Wars opens we will have had a Muppets upgrade, a redo of everything around the animation courtyard with different Disney IPs like possibly Wreck It Ralph and Big Hero 6. And GotG will have a much larger presence.

hope you re right..if this was just a star wars expansion I would feel a little bit more confident since this is a DHS expansion who knows what the board will decide...im assuming they will do what Iger wants to do since he's "the man" in their eyes
Hopefully Star Wars big time. I wouldn't mind if they move the Laugh Floor and Buzz out of MK to the Pixar area. Nemo and Crush out of EPCOT ???? I don't know if Cars Land can fit in there. Good places to eat and of course retail. They could make this a great park. I'm curious to see if they expand into the parking lot. I guess anything goes. I'll talk it over with Bob tomorrow morning at the gym.
Edit: I wouldn't mind if the Speedway was moved over to DHS - they need to be kid friendly.

Imo, the current capacity problems at WDW are a direct result of its stagnation with adding new rides. There's no reason we had to wait close to 20 years for a replacement of 20k. There's no reason AK had to wait 11 years after Everest for another substantial addition. There's no reason the last ride built at DHS was TSMM in 2008. Also, you know, Epcot. Need I say more? That's why MK is so packed now compared to the other parks. Over all these years they only did the bare minimum. So, naturally, people are gravitating towards the park with the most to do. It's going to cost Disney so much more money to fix this mess than if they just prevented it with a steady stream of additions in the first place.

Star Wars fans have no problem calling out crap though (see the prequels and the OT special editions). If Disney doesn't deliver, I can guarantee they'll get a mouthful about it.

I really did like the Frozen fireworks when I saw them last year. But now whenever I hear "Frozen" and "Walt Disney World," well, let's not go there ;) This thread is about Star Wars and DHS :)

You can only imagine what he would've done as CEO after the success of Potter.......... Things would most likely be very different right now.

I still haven't seen it. Maybe I should. If the lines aren't long that is.

I would absolutely love for that to happen. Not so much my wallet though.......

Tempering expectations accordingly until we know what will happen, if it happens.
How different do you think? I've always liked Eisner! Even wanted to meet him in 92 when we went to WDW, because he looked so cool on the Disney Specials and on Magical World Of Disney! Although I don't know all that went in his last years as CEO, maybe that's why I like him so much! I know DCA didn't get the start it wanted, DEP helped DCA through until WOC and DCA 2.0 came along. Wonder if he ever considered coming back as CEO, BOD or some other high position at Disney? He's on twitter if anyone's wondering.

Look- Both CEOs left good and bad imprints on the parks. And potentially good and potential bad imprints on the parks.

Eisner expanded the parks to the world and built many more gates- beating Universal to the punch and really had a passion to make the parks shine.

Eisner would have lost Pixar if he weren't booted, and wouldn't have bought marvel of Star Wars.

Iger let the parks Rot for a decade and allowed them to rest on their laurels and got us into the state of disrepair we are in.

However- we wouldn't have Pixar characters or rides without him. And let's stay on topic here- we would not have a Star Wars land without Iger. We might look back at that being the best thing to ever happen to the parks in the recent past and was the bullet they used to shoot back at universal. He's already righted all wrongs at DCA/DL. More than likely most wrongs will be righted by the 50th at WDW.

Now- can we shut up about freakin Bob Iger now?

She's the best hope this company has for future leadership.

Just to be clear the Kathleen Kennedy we are discussing is the producer/President of Lucasfilm? If so, it's a shame she's in her 60's as I see no way she would be next in line and even after Iger's successor is replaced she would most likely be in her 70's and cannot imagine her sticking around through that age.

Jay and Tom are finance guys and are very versed in that area. Jay is a JPMorgan Chase alumnus (just Chase back then) and Tom is Morgan Stanley alumnus. They are good at M&A and cutting costs. Sometimes you can have way too much of that and we have reached the peak here with Disney.

That being said Kathleen Kennedy is a legitimate superstar and deserves the chance to lead a creative company like Disney.

She will never get it unless TWDC goes private.

Ive got my gripes about what is going on with WDW, but you paint Iger with a very large brush that isnt fair.

DCAs current (and excellent) condition is all Iger. And, negotiating these IPs such as Marvel and LucasFilm under the Disney Umbrella is also Iger.

Iger may be a money man (his job, he is CEO), and he may be a movies man (Eisner was even more so), but he has done a lot of good overall for Disney Parks. Some really bad things too, but its not all bad.

Erm no , Sorry DCA's planning and authorization was done under Eisner, The actual work was done under Iger and would have been chopped to the bone if Lasseter had not intervened. I think the ONLY attraction done under Iger has been TSMM.

Question.

Would the tiered park ticketing decision ever make it's way up to the Board level?

Or is that something Parks & Resorts would just implement on their own. Sometimes items like that, while not requiring capital expenditures, is brought to the board as an "FYI" item for discussion. After all, a decision to fundamentally change how the biggest resort in the biggest entertainment company in the world charges people is a big deal.

Onward and upward.

Yes it would as it would change how revenue is recognized by P&R which is very much a BoD level function.

That was my thought as well. We will have to wait for the finished product before saying for certain but from concept it should look great.

Closing attractions with out replacements while seems terrible right now could lead somewhere great. Abandoned property, from a buisness standpoint, is terrible. It's space that could be used to generate revenue in one form or another. While rides don't generate revenue by themselves with out them the parks wouldn't be more than a fancy mall that you have to pay to get in. They are the soul of what brings people to Disneyland and Disney World.

Closing attractions reduced OPEX significantly and that went straight to the bottom line, People still came in the same numbers so why not close some more...
