Blt is still the pits

I stayed at BLT this last year and was surprized to find so many problems in such a new building.

We evern had the lock a one of the baths fail and maintenance had to come get a grandchild out of the bathroom.

Did like the extra bath and the room layout.

Loved watching the fireworks over the Magic Kingdom.

Did find that the cast members at the CR did not feel like the guest staying at the BLT where really guest of the CR. I almost got the feeling that they wish that DVC was not there.

Love the top of the world bar, but found it empty everytime we went there. Might be because the system they use to get you there. Had to go down from the 5th floor to the lobby, find someone that could help youm than take the elevator back to the top floor. They need to find a better way to do this.

I don't know if I noticed this myself but I can see it. I would anticipate that BLT has caused more work while the number of CMs that support CR and now BLT as well is probably similar of the same.

I can see how resentment may set in. If so, I wonder if that is the case when other DVC buildings started like BCV or BWV. At first, it caused a lot of extra work for CMs that didn't use to have to support it. Over time however and turnover, the resentment probably passes as more and more weren't working in the before a DVC building was attached environment.

I would like to THINK that is not the case. After all, we (DVC) pay for front desk services. That money we pay is supposed to cover any additional staff necessary to cover the DVC workload.

I would like to THINK that. In reality I suspect you are correct.

What I think has happen is that the staff is about the same with DVC paying for thier share of the workload. This is one way that I think WDW benifits from DVC.

To the OP, I read your first thread when you weren't happy with BLT and wanted to sell. I'm glad you were able to do what made ya happy in the end. You're right. Why keep something if you don't like it and/or won't use it. Valid point. And, hey, kudos to you for continuing to share the info and feedback you get from friends who are also DVC owners and have experienced BLT.

The $800 being "nothing" and "popcorn" etc. was kinda harsh, tho. Honestly. I've taken trips where I, like you, cleared $800 inside of a couple days. Heck, I've spent that much just shopping at WDW inside one store. LOL! I'd never refer to it as a drop in the bucket, tho. Seriously. $800 is a whole lotta hard-earned drops for some. It certainly has been for us in the past. I'd be afraid of the bad karma in making such comments. Wouldn't it be awful if $800 meant the difference between eating or having a home or not? Even at WDW $800 can go a long a long way, you just gotta make it work harder for you. Again, not criticizing you. That particular bit just stuck out to me as maybe kinda brutal but not a big deal overall.

Glad you found your happy place at the happiest place on earth. Hope your trip continued to be pleasant and on-par with your expectations.

ps. I'm not the biggest football fan or expert but I did watch the Superbowl this year. Commercials were the highlight. The halftime show was pretty bad. Unless you were a fan of one of the teams playing, I don't think you missed much. If I had the choice I'd have been in a park rather than watching the game in this blasted hotel in Oklahoma. That's just me. :D

No surprise. I wouldn't expect someone named "sweetpee" to make football a priority.

Thank you! I'm reading through this now and feel the same way! We are new BLT owners and couldn't be happier.

Wow...can't get the hate here.
We're BLT owners, love the place...and just added 200 more points.

I guess different strokes for different folks.

We stayed here in October and really enjoyed it.

No you all MUST be wrong! BeachClubNut says its the pits and two other people agree. You're wrong! WRONG I tells ya!!!

Not to take the thread too far off topic but this attitude is hardly limited to BLT. If you catch a Disney Cast Member in a candid moment, most will tell you that in general DVC members are among the most self-absorbed, self-entitled, arrogant, low-tipping guests to grace the Disney resorts.

Ask a CM how many times they've heard phrases like "I paid ____ to buy into DVC and I want ____ now!" or "don't my dues pay your salary?"

These are generalizations, of course, but they go a long way toward explaining the mindset of many CMs. Kinda like the dog that has been beaten so many times it flinches at the slightest movement. Certainly some CMs are better at hiding it than others but many dread having to deal with members--particularly at the resorts which cater to both cash guests and DVC where the difference in attitude is most pronounced.

In terms of resort staffing levels, it certainly varies from one resort to another. In most locations DVC hasn't created an dramatic increase in traffic. At the Contemporary, 250 cash rooms in the garden wing were demolished to add about 300 villas. At Jambo house cash rooms were converted to DVC (Kidani has its own front desk.)

That's not to say that Disney hasn't adjusted staffing levels independent of DVC, of course.

I have to say, we have owned for twelve years and have never run across that attitude nor had CM problems,

In any environment you will find people who "feel entitled" but lets not state this is true of so many DVC owners as its not.

To date we have not had a htoel CM who was rude or nasty at all in fact the vast majority go wayyyy overboard to be nice. Thats one of the reasons we return

As for the sense of entitlement thing noted above... -->! Really?! That's just awful! Shame on them.

Just to clarify, I think you're mixing up a couple different issues. Or perhaps more accurately I just wasn't clear enough in explaining.

1. The vast majority of the time, I completely agree that you will not get any sort of attitude from a CM. Every so often we've had someone who is a little more curt than others but nothing I would necessarily call rude.

With that said...

2. Yes, there absolutely are DVC members who have a greater entitlement attitude than the typical Disney guest. Many times it manifests itself in relation to not getting into a room when they think they should or not being granted a late check-out (which DVC does not do.) Other times it's about things like not being on the floor they requested or having the a specific balcony view.

DVC members do tend to be among the most knowledgable Disney guests and that probably doesn't help. But it's a daily occurrence to have members throwing temper tantrums in the hotel lobby, some demanding a room change so that their balcony faces a desired direction and others expecting heads to roll when they can't get into their room at 3:00pm.

Bell services CMs and valet parkers will also tell you that DVC members are notoriously bad tippers as a group. That's part of the reason we lost the free valet parking as a member perk. Apparently a significant number of members thought that "free" meant they didn't have to tip either. The valet parking company (which is not owned by Disney) hoped they could make up for the loss in parking fees via tips from DVC members. But when that didn't happen, they pulled the free parking offer as soon as they were contractually able.

Last summer I ran into a bell services CM at the Grand Californian. His cart looked like it had everything but the kitchen sink--stacked up to the top with luggage, groceries, toys and more. He said the sad truth is he's brought up loads like that and been tipped $5 or less for his trouble (FYI $1-2 PER ITEM is considered appropriate.) He made it clear that DVC members were more often than not the culprits. Sad to think that it took less than a year of VGC being open for members to earn that reputation.

Certainly not all members fit this profile. But the group is large enough for CMs to have taken notice.

Will a CM treat you differently because you are a DVC member? Most of the time, no. But sadly members have developed a reputation among CMs...and it isn't a good one.

We are headed to a BLT one bedroom for our annual Mardi Gras vacation. We've heard some horror stories about it, but will wait to make our own judgements after our stay. We are looking forward to it!!!
