One of my friends at work today made an excellent point to me today about the movie. They actually have never been to SeaWorld before and know nothing what goes on in the park. THey watched the movie and said they found it to be a hyped up version of Wikipedia backed up with opinions of people and not real facts. They actually are going with me to the park on Sunday this week. I am looking forward to showing them the real Seaworld

" ^And here folks we have proof of why I don't even read the first 3 or 4 lines of most of the posts in this thread. I did see a a person posting about waiting for whales to be released in the ocean , then finally riding manta; I laughed. Manta is the best coaster in Orlando. Wonder if "Black****" could've added that in the video? No? Budget no wide enough? Awe :/ Fun ride. Fun shows "
Pros and cons of large cetaceans in captivity, animal abuse or not, employee safety, abusive employership...difficult questions, a subject for soul searching and personal moral choices...

...no, SEA has teh awesome coaster!!1!

Okay.

Meanwhile at SeaWorld today

Bear dancing in Romania draws crowds, fighting in Thailand is a national pastime, rhino horns for sexual stamina are instantly sold out in China.

The issues raised in Blackfish are of morality and sustainability. We know SEA is a massive billion dollar industry. The question is, are we taking our children to a bear dancing show?

I have been at SeaWorld on Saturday and Sunday this week and crowds were huge. Lots of children all over the park having a good time with their families. The looks on their faces are priceless.

Also for those curious, since the movie has come out on CNN SeaWorld has had nothing but up days on the stock market. Since the CNN debut the stock is up almost 6% which is incredible.

So again, is there or is there not this swelling movement against SeaWorld? It cannot be both.
In my opinion no swelling movement agaisnt Seaworld. No more then the peta and anti people that have been this way since SeaWorld first opened. Social media makes these groups look larger then they are. THey can have multiple accounts and just keep posting over and over. I have been going to SeaWorld for many years and I have to say this entire year has had some pretty good crwods. Especailly Sumemr Nights and Spooktacular this year. THey had bigger attendance then in years past and you could clearly see that. When you get to the park at noon and the aprking lot is nearly at capacity that tells you right there. THe people are still coming and they are still learning and enjoying the park while SeaWorld keeps rescuing animals and caring for them.

While Blackfish has recived much press, I'm going to plug another documentary out this year on the subject of zoos. CBC's Zoo Revolution discusses everything from the evolution of zoos from the victorian era, to what zoos big and small do around the world (big and small) to the pros and cons of zoos as conservation tools. With expert input from both sides of the argument and done within 45 minutes. Unfortunately, because it is a Canadian TV documentary, it won't get the exposure of this movie, which is a shame as it effectively looks at the bigger picture instead of focusing on how one company treats one kind of its animals.

And while everyone is on the subject of animal treatment in captivity, why isn't there more work done to eliminate the truly skecthy zoos that still can be found throughout Canada, the US and the rest of the world (one n Florida where video is not allowed, was still shown in the doc)? Seems like a more urgent and easily achieved goal than trying to fight a multi-billion dollar behemoth.

Two things.

#1- I'm not trying to cast dispersion toward CNN, but they still have Piers Morgan on their roster...do they not?

#2- How many of you who do NOT support SeaWorld eat food that once consisted of a living organism? So it's okay for us to consume living things but keeping them in an enclosure that we deem not appropriate is not okay? I'm pretty sure that Betty the Cow doesn't want to be sliced up and served between two buns and some condiments but that continues to happen.

...Peta are crybaby tree-huggin' hippies....
If only they were.

If only PETA cared anything at all about animals, I might be able to stomach their antics. But they don't care.

All they care about is getting animal lovers riled up, so those people will give them money.

It upsets me that good-hearted people give money to PETA instead of honest organizations like the ASPCA.

If you want to help animals, donate to the ASPCA. Don't give a cent to PETA.

And don't watch Dog Shows because those dogs lead horrible lives.

And don't buy an animal from a pet store, as those animals come from mills.

I will admit that I fell for an animal charity a while back...they were just asking for a dollar...so I sent them one.

Then they spent three dollars trying to get me to send them 5.00.

Which I did....and they sent me a gift (which I figured the cost of the gift and the postage probably cost them 4.00) and a request for 10.00.

I finally wrote them off my charity list as they were NOT spending the money I sent them to help animals, but to solicit more donations.

I watched "BlackFish." Is it one sided? Yes it is! Does it make some good points? Yes, there are lessons to be learned. Now I don't believe Sea World should hunt Killer Whales. That was a way of the past and should not continue. However, breeding from the current stock and saving ones in the wild that can not be returned to the wild to use in shows to bring awareness is acceptable to me.

Sometimes the good justifies the harm done. People feel more connected and care more when they interact with nature. Since the Killer Whale habitat is out of the reach of most people, this interaction happens at Sea World. Is captivity the best way to bring awareness? Maybe not, but it might be necessary.

Now are the whales happy in captivity? Who knows! They are intelligent animals, but so are humans and I know a few who are quite happy to sit in a 12x14 room for ten hours a day watching t.v. :) Are the tricks that the tourist love demeaning to the whales or does it stimulate them while in captivity? Again, I'm sure even the experts disagree, so who knows.

Will I take my kids to Sea World? Yes! There are plenty of teaching moments to be had there. They have to learn what conservation means to change their world. Will they only see animals in zoos and aquariums? No, it's important to see the wild - National Parks are great for that.

While I would love to see the Killer Whales swim freely in the wild, those whales in captivity have done for more Wildlife awareness then releasing them into wild would ever do. One of the best ways to get people to truly understand and want to care for something is giving them to chance to see it in real life. This is I believe in Sea World and will continue to go to Sea World.

These last two posts are very well said. Just an example of the many people who have been changed by these amazing animals at SeaWorld. Like WWWD said there are many teaching moments and lots of education to be had at the park. SeaWorld teaches conservation and animal education and thats what its all about. And while doing this they rescue the thousand animals that they do.

Issues like this one are much too complex to be argued with firm, predetermined arguments. There must be room for nuance to have any kind of intelligent discussion regarding an issue about what is and isn't animal cruelty. I eat meat, but I don't see hunting as a pastime I would ever enjoy. I don't litter, but that doesn't make me Al Gore. And I personally don't think that keeping a giant mammal in a concrete pool is a very humane thing to do, but that doesn't mean I am a flower child loving, beaded headband wearing, peace sign adorned, PETA supporting, worshiper of the souls of all the animals who died before and shall be remembered forever crazy person. I would argue that the type of animal in captivity matters, rather than making some blanket statement that one must say all animals be free and in the natural environment. How well are we able to recreate an environment for that particular animal? I have no problem with Animal Kingdom, because the animals there are provided with a rich, textural environment, be it completely accurate or not. The white walls of a concrete basin do not provide this rich textural environment. I would also argue there is a difference between passive entertainment (viewing an animal in an environment ala AK) and active entertainment (requiring an animal to perform and then rewarding this unnatural behavior).

Wake up, wake up. It’s the 21st century.

The era of captive killer whales doing tricks in tanks is going to come to an end. It’s not going to happen overnight, but we are moving toward a future in which captive orcas will live in coastal seapens and ocean sanctuaries. Captivity still---but with respect, not exploitation.

Now that the dark side of SeaWorld is being exposed in a big way, the old ways of doing business cannot be sustained. You can’t put the genie back in the bottle.

BLACKFISH on CNN was huge.

The film was seen by 1.4 million viewers in one night.
BLACKFISH was the highest ranking CNN film this year and the second most mentioned cable program on Twitter when it premiered on the network October 24.

The Hollywood Reporter wrote:
"BLACKFISH saw its TV debut on Thursday night, and the critical darling nabbed significant ratings wins for CNN.”

The New York Times reported:

"The ratings results were impressive. The channel swept the ratings among every group under 55 years old. That meant not only the group that is most often sold to news advertisers, viewers ages 25 to 54, but also the younger age groups used for sales in entertainment programming."

"In the 25 to 54 group, CNN attracted an average of 472,000 viewers for the two hours on Thursday. That topped the 311,000 drawn by Fox News in that period and the 235,000 by MSNBC."

"Even more striking was how much better the documentary fared as the audience got younger — the opposite of the normal pattern for news. Among viewers 18 to 49, CNN averaged 688,000, a huge number for any news network. By comparison, Fox News had 216,000 and MSNBC had 173,000 viewers in that demographic."

Oh Patton. So great to have you back again. You and your wishful thinking of how different SeaWorld will be. This past weekend Saturday and Sunday SeaWorld had record crowds AGAIN. Almost all shows at capacity AGAIN. Like I have mentioned time and time again the anti-cap community and PETA community etc. was out in force having all their followers watching this movie. It has not changed the mind of the general population no matter what you say. I have several articles that I have read online from some college graduates in the journalism field who said CNN broke all ethics in journalism when they stamped their name on this film. More and more people are saying this.
