Well, you have some options. It can be done as a surprise regardless of how you do it, but it all comes down to where you want the cake and the kind of cake you want...i.e. basic podium cake vs. a custom cake. There's a lot of info in the first 3 posts of the Cake Talk thread...but you can message me and I can help go over some of the details.

It's a TON of info, but it should prove to be helpful. I can give you a few basics here...

Basic cakes can be added on to any meal at the time you check in + you can have something comparable delivered to your room. Someone can distract your son while you're adding on the cake should you go this route.

Custom cakes are ordered through either the cake hotline, your home resort, or through the resort bakery handling the cake (my preferred method). Custom cakes can be anything from custom dressed up versions of more basic cakes (i.e. still potentially something that was pre-frozen) to cakes that are fresh and custom from top to bottom. If your design request is more basic, you can usually verbalize this to the person on the other end of the phone; however, more detailed requests are best dealt with by email/fax before the order goes in...i.e. a sketch or inspiration cake pic. Once all details are hashed out, you put in your order...which really shouldn't be done much more than 2 weeks out (although, they can take orders up to 6mos out and in as little as 48 hrs). You'll also notice that different bakeries service different places...i.e. Contemporary handles all of the MK, CR, WL, and FW. It's also very easy to keep this a surprise going this way. They can deliver it to your resort room or you can have it delivered to a meal. We always have ours delivered to meals and they've been great about keeping it a secret until cake time.

In any event, let me know whatever ?s you might have and I'll be happy to try and help :)

Cheers @HouCuseChickie ..Your a gem..;)

Any time!!! :) And like I said, if you have any questions- please feel free to ask. We are doing 2 cakes for our trip this September...and possibly a third if I don't go too crazy booking more ADRs and buying things for the girls  ... so if you have any questions I can't answer, I can try and roll them into my email to the chef next month.

Ok..We are looking at the 2015 calendar and considering 14 nights instead of 12 as the flights leave UK on a Saturday ( school finishes fri 9th oct and returns mon 26th ) So we have this 15 day window..That said we're hoping to do 2 ADRS for Shula's & Yachtsman..16th oct & 23rd..The 23rd is my DS birthday..Would we advise Yachtsman when booking our ADR about a cake for our dessert.?:hungry:

Just a quick question..All going well,if we end up booking October 2015, there is a good chance we'll be there for our DS 17th birthday..I want to get a cake to celebrate..What's the best way to organise this surprise.?

Back when I did it for my DH in 2009 I had two options. I could either walk up to the podium and get a non personalized vanilla or chocolate cake brought to the table, or I could call the cake hotline and order a cake. This is the phone number I believe: 407-827-2253

Here is the picture of the personalized cake I ordered. Totally forgot to take a picture before they cut it. :) It was personalized with Niles' name on it. I could have gone all big and crazy but since it was just the two of us, I just opted for a vanilla cake with creme and fresh strawberries inside - that is his favorite. It was delicious!!!!

Awesome..And at GF also..I'am now convinced your a lottery millionaire..Don't lie.:greedy: I won't send any begging letters..:joyfull:

There usually isn't a huge pricing difference between the bakeries. In most cases, the GF is the most expensive and the CR the least...with all others falling in between...HOWEVER, I have seen cases where the GF ends up doing a wonderful cake for a more reasonable price. The price differences between the bakeries is usually only a few dollars...so, it's nothing overly significant.

These are the cakes we've had done. In all cases, I started the process 2-3 weeks out since they are custom designs. Chef Brian (CR) and Pat (GF) have both told me "as little as 48 hours notice" for these kinds of cakes BUT considering they get busy and sometimes have to coordinate with staff to figure out the "how to & who to & can we do?" - I like giving them a slightly larger window. These are the cakes I've designed and ordered to date...

The first 2 were done at the Contemporary...the last was the GF. The last one is the only one I don't love...the bday girl loved it, but the execution wasn't as clean as I've seen them do for other cakes. We also supplied the topper for this one.
