Since some think A.I. is "D.E.A.D." I thoght I would post the ratings from last night from mediaweek

-Ratings Breakdown:
Led by a two-hour installment of the now Hollywood-based American Idol, dominant Fox beat the four competing networks combined by five percent in the overnights. American Idol scored a typically massive 17.3 rating/25 share, building in each half-hour as follows:

American Idol
8:00 p.m. 15.2/23
8:30 p.m. 17.1/25
9:00 p.m. 18.4/27
9:30 p.m. 18.5/27

:p

Umm...just to put things into perspective.

What else is on?

 I could have a local access show that gets huge ratings if nothing else is on the air

15.2
17.1
18.4
18.5

Looks more like the turnstile counts of people who rode Horizons, the original Journey into Imagination, World of Motion, and Body Wars in the last month they existed.

And I don't mean 15.2 million, I mean 15.2 people. I suppose .2 of a person walked in realize what they were getting into, and left.

ttt for progress

Yep, millions of people just happened to be watching because "nothing else was on", keeping out hope that a new episode of Matlock would appear.

AI is ratings gold, I know this. Proving that ratings aren't dwindling by reporting the ratings of a show when there is a serious lack of new programming available is not a good way to judge it.

Matlock no...

If there was a new CSI on, or Grey's Anatomy, or The Office, LOST, 24, or Heroes...the ratings may have been different. I'm sure they'd still be in the number 1 slot...but just not as high.

Well when 'Armed and Famous' was up against AI, the ratings didn't dwindle. And we know how appealing a show with Eric Estrada, Latoya Jackson, and Jack Osbourne as police officers can be. :animwink:

EDIT: Put the "Return of Barney Miller" on and watch AI eat the dust

Actually, Grey's and Heroes aren't on against AI because those respective networks choose not to put their bigger shows on against it for fear that they will fail. You may not agree and watch AI, but the numbers it pulls are gold. BTW, The Biggest Loser and the premier of Big Brother were both on against it last night. They have both in the past pulled in BIG audiences...but if you aren't a fan of reality TV, then of course you would think that nothing GOOD was on last night...

A.I. is in it's "preseason" mode. Ratings will most likely spike again once the real competition begins in a few weeks. Remember, A.I. will run through the May ratings period, so it has a lot of time to gain or lose viewers. If the past holds true, we'll see more watching.

(Psst, I believe I agree with you and said that it's ratings "gold." )

If HSM 3 premiered on disney channel that day, who would win the battle? :lookaroun

HSM is overhyped in my eyes with below average "talent" if thats what you want to call it. But thats besides the point.

“American Idol” is by far the highest rated show on TV and has been since 2002. No other show can touch it in terms of how many millions of viewers tune-in for each new episode weekly.

Shows like “CSI” and “Grey’s Anatomy” have been averaging a good 3-8 million less viewers for each new episode that premiers for years.

“The Office” is a show that never makes the “Top 20” list, “Heroes” is lucky when it does, and “Lost” is lucky when it pulls in over 13 million viewers.

While “American Idol” can pull in anywhere from 26-36 million viewers for each new episode whether there’s a Writer’s Strike going on or not…

Did “American Idol” hit its peak during its season premiere last year? Probably… But for a show that is in its 7th season to still be on top by such a wide-margin shows that there’s still a lot of life left in the franchise.

BTW: Here are the “Top 20” most-watched shows for last week:

I think AI in the world will be huge the first 3-5 years and then the attraction will be old. People will get sick of it rather fast i think.

I'm so glad you brought this up, because TV ratings are what I do for a living.

IDOL is indeed, still pulling big ratings.
HOWEVER, it is also true that the show is down considerably from last season and in fact, is on track to have its lowest season in 5 years.
In my market (one of the best performing IDOL markets), the show is down
-21% from last season so far and last night, it scored its lowest rating since 2003.

So, the people who say the show is a force to be reckoned with are right. But so are the people who say the show is losing viewership. And the fact that is losing viewership WITHOUT the normal competition makes that loss even more significant.

And by the way, someone else said that IDOL's ratings build throughout the season. This is not correct. It usually has its best ratings at the very beginning and the very end of the season, with a large trough thru the middle of it.

It is also untrue that it was a huge hit since Day 1. It premiered in the Summer of 2002 and did pretty well. But it didn't become the juggernaut it is today until season 2.

This discussion about IDOL's ratings is apparently worrisome to FOX, which is why you hear Ryan Seacrest (the worst thing about the show in my opinion) tell us literally every 5 minutes that this year has the "best talent ever".
I don't yet know if that's true or not, but they are clearly worried.

Having said that, I don't much care whether they put an IDOL attraction in the parks or not. It has nothing to do with Disney, but it will undoubtedly be very popular.

People in your market are spending most of their time digging out :ROFLOL:

Maybe so, but the fact is that bad weather usually INCREASES viewership.

Furthermore, the trend is not specific to my market. This is well documented in the trades.

I have been a fan of the show in the past and I still watch it. Don't be so defensive.
