Big Blow for WDW Admission

Some of our cast members in the store who received their comp. passes for the Christmas season read on the letter that came with it that WDW admission for Disney Store cast members has been discontinued as of 1/4/04.

Anyone know any more about this?
Is it just being read wrong on the letter?

This is a huge blow for the company because it supposedly applies to not only DisneyStore cast members but also, ABC, ESPN, etcetera.

I didn't see that anywhere....will check again...

From what I have heard it is really up to the individual line of business whether comp access is offered to their cast. The Disney Stores pay Walt Disney World a set sum for comp access for their cast members. (I think.)

I´m going to be flamed for this (I hope not, but if so, I am sorry), but I think this was about to happen sometime. I am actually amazed it didn´t happen before.

Think about it... only in WDW, there are 50,000 cast members, all granted free access to the parks and some of them, 12 times a year up to 4 people each time. Just make some numbers...

While I worked there, some days Epcot seemed sooooo empty and then you wonder how many of those guests that day in the park actually paid a fee to keep the attractions running sometimes only for a family going on them over and over and over.

Sorry, it´s still a business and granting free admission is something to consider when you give that perk to so many people.

;)

Ok, but just for the record Disney Store CMs get paid less than we do, just for the record....

but also it is most likely going to happen that Disney Store will be sold and will not longer be part of the company at that point. And Disney Stores weren't originally allowed free admission, then they were, then they weren;'t, blah blah.
And as far as not paying to keep the rides running, they still buy food, merchandise, etc. So ya. And once again they get paid less than we do. Management pay was a joke. (I used to be a manager for DS).

I would rather get a better paid salary than free tickets I can´t use because getting to Orlando costs me much more (unless I lived in Orlando, of course, but still... I prefer the cash). Maybe some comps at certain times of the year would be nice, but a maingate pass to compensate a lower salary? Unless I sold it to others.... :lookaroun

I understand about the shopping for food and merchandise in the parks and I was sure someone was going to point that out when I posted it, but still... you can shop the same at the Disney Store with your discount and some of the food people buy doesn´t go directly to Disney, but to the participants.

I just think it was a very nice perk given to way too many people. Too bad for those who were used to have it, but it was bound to happen.

WHOO HOO!!!

Awesome update!

I talked to somebody at our TEAM Center (DL side), and she basically said that the thing says you can't use your ID. Main Gate Passes and Silver Passes go unaffected! YES!!!!!

This makes me so happy as I have a trip planned for early 2004, and I was about to panic on how to get really cheap tickets into the park :)

I agree, Maria. Getting in for free and then buying a coke, popcorn and a postcard doesn't make up for the cost of admission. I think that if you work at WDW, you should have a pass. If you work at TDS, you should get a discount to the store. This was bound to happen eventually, if the stores get sold.

dream,

Basically what has happened (without going into a tangent-fest):

1. Disney sent out the standard complimentary tickets (2 per cast member, more depending on each cast member's dependency listing) with a letter that said Cast Members from Disneyland Resort (CA) could not go into the WDW parks with their ID, and that WDW cast members could not go into the Disneyland parks for free either. All other business units were out of luck also, as they couldn't get in on their ID either. (but DL cast members could get into DL, and WDW cast members could get into WDW parks).

2. Everyone goes crazy.

3. As it turns out, the policy has always been that one was required to have a Main Gate Pass (earned after three months/90 days of employment with the company) or a Silver Pass to enter the parks. So, there really was no issue to begin with. The letter was just stating a policy that has been in place for a while now. It just failed to mention that Main Gate Pass entry still works at all of the parks.

Interesting. I'm a WDW CM and I didn't get that letter. I got my maingate and my comps but no letter. Then again, I've always known that I have to show my maingate to get into DL.

I guess what all the shouting is about is this affecting TDS cast members. NOT WDW cast. We at TDS look forward to our trips. The discounts really help and I am sorry but we can't all up and move to Florida and work there!!!! Our jobs get us as close to our true love as we can get. Please just keep that in mind when you are making any negative comments about TDS cast members and their reactions to this news. It is bad enough when they close your store on you the day after Christmas (last year!!!) and now we are being told that in the near future the company will be sold. Have a heart. All of the news is hard for every TDS cast member.

Thank You.

I am a Disney store castmember(5 YEARS)and proud of it.The free admission only started in 2000 for us and as I understand we where not supposed to get in free on our IDs in the first place.Personally thats ok with me I understand,as long as I get my discounts Im ok with it.Some of the castmembers in my store are going crazy, but they got hired after 2000 so they dont remember when we didnt get in free.I know our days are almost over at the Disney stores and I cant move to Orlando for 6 more years till our youngest graduates from high school. Its going to kill me not getting the discounts and not going to property control and company D.But I went many years not being a castmember so I will have to deal with it when the time comes.By the way fellow Disney store castmembers did you notice we didnt get our comp tickets this year in a christmas card like past years.(Long live the Disney store):)

Maria and others we Disney store castmembers (most of us)dont work at the store for the pay.We work there for the benefits of discounts to WDW and thats it.We have cast driving 75 miles plus to work at our store because theres closed ,we loose $$ driving to the store. We do it because we love Disney,I would love to work at WDW a week a year to keep my discounts but I was told they dont do that anymore:(

I didn´t mean to offend you, Polyman. If I did, I apologize. What I meant in my response earlier, was that having perks for working at any place is nice, but in today´s economy when it´s hard to find a job, I´m not sure many people can have the luxury of quiting theirs because a perk is taken away.

Exactly my dear. I may be a WDW CM now but I started my Disney career with Disney Store as a Lead. The folks at DS have been going through a lot. If their store isn't closing then one around them is so their friends are losing their jobs. Now before the division is even sold they yank that benefit away. The people are TDS work there because they love Disney and they love being part of that family. One of the many perks of being able to get into DL and WDW for free was being to come back and tell your guests in the store what was new there and what makes the parks great. The advertising is word of mouth and Disney Store CMs are great at synergy for the rest of the company.
But by doing this they are ticking off a whole slew of people, yes they were going to take it away once they sold the Disney Store, but in the meantime they could have been gracious enough to keep that benefit.
And to the unsymphathetic CMs, just put yourself in their shoes ok guys!
