Best kind of digital camera to bring?

Im getting a summer job, and I want to save up for a really good camera for my next Disney family vacation. I like taking really detailed pictures and lots of them. I dont know what model or brand I should get... can anyone help me out? Any recommendations?

for more information, and probably more confusion.

From what you seem to be describing about your desired use and level of flexability, it seems that you should lean to a digital SLR. The Canon Rebel I believe is a good choice (I have the film version). Many here enjoy Nikon.
These are in the $800 -$1000 range and I believe offer the greatest flexability. The point and shoot digitals that offer similar features are $6-900.

With the suggestions you get here, possibly use the comparision feature on BestBuy or CircuitCity websites to give you a comprehensive review and highlight the features you consider most important.

No offense, but might you have a suggestion as to where to get this "12mm" film camera from? I am not an expert in the field of photography, but I have never seen or heard of a 12mm film camera. As for a digital not being all that great, there are plenty of digitals that can hold their own against a film camera and most have the ability to do B&W shots as well. As for a recommendation, like others have said, it all depends on what you are looking for. I personally use a Canon PRO 1 and SD600 and have been very happy with both, but they are two different animals. Once is very compact and the other is quite a bit more bulky with more zoom. As mentioned, dpreview.com is a very good source of info for cameras as is steves-digicams.com. I am not sure what it is you are looking for, but the Canon S3 IS is a camera worth looking into in my opinion. Good luck in your search.

Well a 12mm is like one of the most standard film cameras, as for a location of where to buy...Overstock.com, Amazon.com, Ebay. Anotherthing theres really no digital camera ive ever seen that truely matched in perfection. Once you take classes and develop your own film like I do maybe youll understand better lol.

Get a camera thats 4 megapixels or higher, preferably a reliable brand, and has the most optical zoom you can afford. IMO, once you are over 4-5megapixels, zoom is the next most important feature. Digital zoom means nothing. Don't plan on using it. It just crops and enlarges the pic, causing it to pixelate. Optical zoom is where it is at. Most cameras have both optical and digital zoom, just pay attention to the optical zoom number. Get the highest you can afford.

Remember to save money for a memory card or two. A 512MB card will hold approx 300 pics taken at 5 megapixels.

Please do post a link to a single 12mm camera, I am yet to find a single one. For the purposes of a vacation goer, digital is the best choice when it comes to convienience. Having to deal with changing film, taking a picture only to find out it didn't turn out good once you get home, and having to constantly buy film is much more than I would want to deal with.

No kidding...I used to develop my own photos too, and I would NEVER go back to doing that after years of using digital cameras now -- and I beg to differ...my Digital SLR actually takes BETTER pictures than I used to get with my old NIkon SLR, and the ability to manipulate them in photoshop afterwards to make them pretty next to perfect can't be beat. There will always be some people who prefer standard cameras, but those are going the way of Betamax...most camera companies have even stopped manufacturing them, and are exclusively releasing digital cameras now. AT any rate, that is NOT what the original poster asked about -- they wanted to know which DIGITAL camera to bring along.
