Before the Fast Pass era...

Remember before Fast Pass was created and you're in the Magic Kingdom looking to go on Splash Mountain or Space Mountain or Peter Pan or Haunted Mansion, just to name a few....What wait time would you consider reasonable? I remember when there wasn't a Fast Pass and sometimes I saw Peter Pan's wait was longer than Splash or Space.

I think I'd wait for no longer than an hour...for any ride. I was over there on Sunday evening and you're absolutely right about the line for Peter Pan...what's up with that? I haven't ridden that ride since I was 13!

I don't get it either. The ride doesn't even look that good compared to some of the other rides. I just don't understand how it always has such as huge queue.

20-25 minutes

20-25 minutes was about all that I could ever take - and I'm so spoiled now, I'm not sure I'd wait that long any more. There's just so much to do that does not require such a long wait. (I think I made a few exceptions for totally new attractions).

The first time I waited for Splash Mountain, I stood in the summer heat for an hour and thirty minutes. But that's because it was the first time. :p

I wouldn't have waited over 40 minutes for any attraction, unless I knew it was going down for rehab/closure.

I got you there! The year splash mountain opened I waited somewhere around 2 to 2 and a half hours in the July heat. Too add to that I was a little kid and I had to use the rest room after waiting for about 20 minutes. I couldn't get out of line, it was miserable!

Peter Pan has a pretty low capacity...with all those people getting in the pirate ships alone or in groups of two...they improved the capacity issue with rides like Buzz and Pooh (Pooh has multiple rows, Buzz has more cars like the Haunted Mansion)

Right on. It's not so much that Peter Pan is better than Splash, Space, etc., it just has a lower guest per-hour ratio, making the wait longer.

To the OP, I don't remember much from the pre-fast pass era, but I do know that park attendance has grown over the years. So, maybe there were just fewer guests in general making the waits shorter? Hence having no need for fast pass.

I just can't even imagine anyone wanting to stand in a line like that for a 5 minute ride . . . so not worth it.

Being an AP holder I won't wait longer than 20 - 25 mins now.

Man, this is the mentality that I just don't get, having grown up going to Cedar Point. A long line is anything over an hour and a half for a major ride. 40 minute stand-by for Soarin? Heck yes, I'm there! I waited an hour and a half regularly during 07 and 08 at Cedar Point for Maverick (the new coaster). Hour-long lines are average, and I'll gladly hop in any line under 2 hours for a major attraction, even by myself.

That said, there are only 5 or 6 attractions I would consider waiting that long for (Soarin', RnRC, Everest, Splash, and possibly KSR). After experiencing FastPass...my outlook on lines hasn't changed.

Long waits were very common before FP. Something the anti-FP crowd doesn't really like to think about.

In my admittedly anecdotal experience 2-3 hours waits seemed to be common for the mountains, a steady wait of over an hour for RnRC.

When I worked at KSR waits in the triple digits were common almost every morning.

I have been going to WDW for over 30 years. I've gone during peak season and I've gone when the park is empty. I've been there on July 4th and I've been there on New Years Eve. I can remember pre-FastPass.I've probably crossed the turnstiles for MK over 70 times (it's my best guess). I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've entered MK and not gone on Space Mountain.

Except for the Future World attractions the first 3 or 4 summers EPCOT Center was open and Splash Mountain the first 3 or 4 summers it was open, I have never spent more than 2 hours waiting in line for any one attraction. Not in 1979, not in 1984, not in 1993 and not two years ago.

When are/were you people visiting WDW that 2-3 hour waits are/were common?

If there was a chance I had to wait in hour lines, I'd get there at the crack of dawn to avoid the lines. If I couldn't get there early and/or had to vacation during peak season, I probably wouldn't go during a time where there were immense crowds. Standing in lines waiting around is not my idea of a fun vacation.

Believe it or not there was a time when people vacationed off season where "fastpass" wouldn't have been necessary. People caught on to vacationing in Sept-December or non-school breaks so fastpass is now necessary where it wouldn't have been years ago.

Disney likes to pack em' in like sardines now. Gone are the days of riding attractions over and over.

I remember going in 99 and waiting over an hour for my first ride on Splash Mountain..I honestly don't mind waiting in long lines for certain rides. I think waiting in line is part of the fun sometimes! I'm probably of the minority on this answer.
