WHAT: Celebrating our 1st Wedding Anniversary, well just shy of it.
WHERE: Walter Elias Disney World - POP Century Resort - Yacht Club Resort
WHEN: June 16 - 21st, 2013.

So, to preface this Trip Report a few details are needed. This will really be my first trip report, I believe I attempted another one but it was pretty weak sauce if you ask me. I will attempt to be more thorough with my reporting, thoughts, and opinions on experiences etc etc etc.

In July of 2012 we Disneymooned for a whopping 12 days, which was epic on many levels. Considering the length of stay we decided that an annual pass simply made sense. We then followed up our July trip with a weeklong stay at the Swan in March of 2013 with our best friends. We shared a room to save some money and it was overall a fun trip, despite their newbieness and my unfortunate roll of tour guide and historian.

So this brings us to THIS trip report. My wife and I can get pretty impulsive but normally something along the line keeps us in check... that is normally Expedia or Disney themselves. What I mean by that is we'll often share a few drinks then start with the "we should go to Disney next month" spiel but almost always we'll check Expedia or Kayak and we're faced with a 400 dollar flight on late notice. That is an instant trip killer for us. UNTIL this past month! We're hanging around the house after a long day of work, popped a few cold ones, threw on Pinocchio and 2 hours later we were booked for another stay at Disney. The stars simply alligned, flights were cheap at less than 250 a person (roundtrip, flying direct at good times via Jet Blue) and we were on Facebook chatting with my usual KK agent. We went back and forth with the idea of where to stay and we were acting under the guise of being economically sound in our decision making process. We almost instantly eliminated our normal Beach Club stay, with the reality of a wicked high rack rate and almost no availability in such short notice. We then downgraded to POFQ and started to discuss the impact of the bussing, size of room for the value of your dollar, etc etc etc and ultimately came down to the old "lets save some bucks" mentality... choosing The Pop Century Resort as our final stay.

I would be a liar if I didn't say I was a little nervous about the downgrade from Deluxe to Value. But at the end of the day it all comes down to your perceptions and what you value in a resort. For my wife and I we value access, not necessarily theming and resort accommodations. We enjoy the Beach / Yacht because it allows us to walk to two gates and a great collection of entertainment at the Boardwalk resort, plus a wicked nice pool eh? Be it as it may, we simply use the room as a place to crash since we're early risers and usually end our days in the parks.

EDIT: As many of you know, or may not know, I am a photographer. I now describe myself as a photography enthusiast, I now refuse to do any more paid projects. I now focus 100% on myself and my own personal life.

When it comes to photographing Disney there are many, many options to consider. Size and weight is certainly the biggest one that crosses my mind. I have had quite a few DSLR bodies from the cheapest entry levels to Nikon FX bodies. Chase Jarvis likes to say that the best camera is the one you have with you. I'm just not a huge fan of the digital world but it's certainly more convenient. I wanted something that would give me some quality while not weighing a brick. That's where this camera came into play, the Fuji X-Pro1. A hell of a lot cheaper than a Leica M9, same size, but after a week of use and reviewing the cameras files this one is going back to B&H. The camera IQ and image quality is second to none, literally it's THAT good. But there is one caveat with this camera. The autofocus sucks, period. So without going into a huge review or something I'm returning her... which makes me sad because I really wanted to like her. Every image in this TR was taken with the Fuji X-Pro1 strapped with a Fujinon 35mm f1.4. Everything will be in black and white, because that's just what I like.

... TR continued.

Since we like to max out our park time we almost always decide on an insanely early flight. This time we loaded up and were out the door at 3AM, off the ground by 6AM, landed at MCO just short of 9AM, and were at the Pop Century by 10AM.

Check in went absolutely fine, the welcome team at the POP was very friendly and had the expected CM charm. At first glance the resort was exactly what I expected... although I had seen numerous trip reports and images of the resort so I felt as if I had already been there! Check in was smooth and we were off to our room in the 50's building, room 1122. Upon opening the door I was actually pleasantry surprised. The room was a little on the small side but it's just my wife and I, kids would have been a tough squeeze. We had requested a single king and were granted one, which was nice. Again, seems like the perfect room to just use as a pillow and a clean bed... especially for 110 bucks a night.

Now it's time to toss those bags, freshen up real quick, pound some water, toss a granola bar in your system, and we're off to the parks.

Our first stop is always the MK and we were certainly not going to break that mold!

After checking in, and completing the actions described above, we were off to the Magic Kingdom. Well that was after waiting for our bus, the uncovered bus stops at the POP make it for a rather hot experience. We didn't have to wait too long, maybe 20 minutes. At this point I could care less about a bus, I just wanted to hit the Magic Kingdom ASAP.

We were here! Despite being our 3rd trip in the last 12 months it never gets old. IMHO you aren't at Disney until you cross into the Magic Kingdom. The sounds, the smells, the sights... all wrapped up it's just the best. The June in Disney hit us, hard! We didn't get to the MK until around noon and the park was absolutely slammed.

The Harmony Barber Shop - is just me or this a hidden gem? It's right on Main Street but since it's slightly tucked away I feel like people just don't know about this experience? I'll admit that I'm slightly vain when it comes to my haircut so I had it taken care of before I left at a my local spot, but the wife really wanted to experience this. It's on par with a cut at SuperCuts, price wise, so why not right? I thought it was really fun!

Since we've been fortunate enough to enjoy Disney so much this year our take on the parks have changed. We're less crazed on attractions and more about the atmosphere, small details and nuances, and experiencing new things. We took our sweet time, dropped into the SOTMK station and picked up our cards despite having two complete sets.

Another thing we tried to do were more character meet n' greets. We normally skipped these, scoffed at the lines, and just avoided them at all cost. But to mix things up we decided it would be fun to grab a few here and there. Before heading down we made a handmade book... thick stock, cardboard covered with paper and laminated, and then spiral bound at Staples. All together cost me like 20 bucks to make one, but it was the process and final product that I enjoyed rather than just buying a generic Disney one.

Lunch: following the "new" experiences motto of the trip we decided to split a Sweet n' Spicy Chicken Waffle Sandwich at Sleepy Hollow. Overall a pretty decent sandwich, a little too much waffle but I might get it again in the future. Again, certainly large enough for two people to split. I really liked the sweet cole slaw, a different take on a classic.

Dinner: again, following the "new experience" theme here we decided to try yet another restaurant for the first time. We hopped on the boat and headed over to the Grand Floridian to dine at Citricos. Now this is when I'll express the importance or marking reservations with whatever you're celebrating. Disney really steps up and goes beyond the standard. We started off with some complimentary champagne, a small side of apple with creme freshe and a pear sauce, and to top it off a customized menu for our family. A real nice touch, completely unexpected. We started off with an arancini ball, delicious for sure. I went with the Veal shank, the wife chose the grouper. We both certainly enjoyed our meals, presented well, excellent balance of flavors. A little high on the price but it's Disney, bargains don't exist here.

Great start to your Trip Report! Just waiting on the pics...

the camera doesn't have great RAW support, I have to convert all the images to .TIF and then save for web as JPEGS. Also, I can't edit them in Camera Raw, just CS5... which I am nowhere near as skilled.

Well, after enjoying dinner we headed off to the Poly (with our suits packed) to pool hop. Hey, we're saving money at the Pop and I've stayed at the Poly before so I deserve a quick dip! Just our luck the pool was closed, they must have just loaded it with new chemicals because the chlorine was really heavy in the air. We needed to quench our thirst so we decided to snag a few frozen Margs and headed off to the quiet pool at Poly. With the main pool closed there were an abundant amount of kids at the quiet pool, so we didn't last long. Headed back into the MK for a 1AM EMH.

After a long day, dealing with crowds and the heat we decided to call it a night around 12:30AM. The crowds weren't too bad at the bus so we were home by 1AM.

Now, this is where our TR gets INTERESTING.

We're early risers, no doubt about that. The type that is up at 6AM, showered, quick breakfast, and off to the parks. When we're staying at the BC we might come back for a mid day swim but we had no intention of doing this while staying at the POP.

6AM comes around, alarm goes off. I am pretty groggy, laying in bed... the wife is up making coffee. Now I thought I felt something on my hands and I can recall flicking something off my hand. I wake up and turn the light on to my left on the nightstand... kind of get out of bed and I see blood on the sheets. Now at first I wasn't shocked, I have a tendency to pick at a cut or something when I am sleeping but then I saw blood on my wife's side and I instantly knew something was UP. My wife has pristine skin, seriously... no blemishes or anything so I instantly turned all the lights on at full blast and there they were... BED BUGGGGGGGGGGS!

So... I am instantly on the horn to management. They come up within 5 minutes with a manager (Todd) and someone from Pest Control. As soon as the pest guy walked in he gave a quick "confirm 724... definitely". I later found out 724 is their internal code for bed bugs.

Now at this point I am ed. We always stay deluxe and decided to give the values a shot and this happens! Now, I know this can happen ANYWHERE. It is not a reflection of the quality of a hotel, many of the top hotels and resorts here in Boston have bouts of bed bugs. It's the clientele from overseas who bring these suckers into the US.

The protocol was a major shocker... they told us we could take NOTHING fabric. Our suitcases, clothes, backpacks... everything other than electronic devices were removed. They were packed, sealed, and sent off to the Linen Services to be fumigated and treated. We were loaded into a taxi at 7AM, with 200 dollars in cash, told to buy new clothes for at least 24 hours.

When we returned from Walmart with some interesting clothes we were told that we were being moved to a new room. Now, at this point that wasn't happening. In a very calm manner I asked to speak with a manager, expressed my disappointment and that I did not feel comfortable staying at the POP any longer. Disney handled the situation with true class. There were apologies and without a pause we were asked where we wanted to stay... our resort of choice.

So after all of our debates on going back and forth between moderates and values, we ended up back in a deluxe at the Yacht club. There was no availability at the Beach and we were on the fence on requesting the Grand Floridian / Polynesian. I'm just a fan of the EPCOT resort area, I prefer being off buses and having options at hand.

We then took a taxi over to the Yacht with a few plastic bags full of phone chargers, cords, and tablets. Without any bags or jackets we decided to leave electronics at home to avoid the rain. By 11AM we were off to DHS, a slight delay in our expected plans. We were also given 4 sets of fast passes for our choice, which were appreciated and used twice at TSM and ToT each.

EDIT: I should have noted that we received our clothing THAT night, which was ahead of their projected 36 hour turn around time. Unfortunately they lost our rain jackets and I'm in the process of dealing with management now that I am home. DW's jacket was nothing special, but mine... a goretex golf jacket that I paid 300 dollars for is now the main issue at hand.

THE KEY: treat service people with courtesy... it's not their fault. I think if I went up to the front desk and started complaining and yelling at someone, or being insulting, I would have gotten nowhere. I simply stated what occurred, acknowledged that these things happen and went from there. NO attitude, no yelling... despite being ed inside!
