Beaches on the East side

Not sure if this is trip planning but here goes.

Are there any nice beaches close to Kennedy Space Centre? Whilst we're on our Disney trip we want to go to the beaches for a day and there is a proposed shuttle launch that falls within the window of our visit.

Having learnt last time that you can waste a lot of time (and loose over $100.00 in tickets) if the cancel a launch, we were thinking of combining the day at the beach with watching the launch from afar. Then, if the do scrub the launch then we haven't wasted the entire day.

What we're after is a beach, hopefully with some kind of bar or restaurant for snacks nearby.

Cocoa Beach would be the best bet. It would put you a little south of Cape Canaveral and there should be no problem with getting snacks, drinks or real food.

Just watch out for seagulls if you decide to eat on the beach. They are tricky, sneaky birds... LOL

We rented a car to get to our cruise ship at Cape Canavrel.

We must have hit at least 5 toll booths $$$$$, Each way. Is there an alternate route?

Sorry, I think the tollway is your best shot.

Just be glad the roads are actually decent. Here in IL the tollways are worse than the regular highways!! Pothole, pothole, crack, giant bump, pothole...

FL tolls are $1 I think-- am I right? So have some singles on you.

Ratcat, I don't know if you planned to watch from Canaveral itself but you can see the shuttle launches from Cocoa Beach (not to be confused with Cocoa). My Nana used to live there and sent us pictures of them alllllllllll the time. Just be forewarned that launches are often rescheduled, and rescheduled, and rescheduled...don't get your hopes too high. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you though! Have a great time!

Cocoa Beach is nice. Much nicer than Daytona Beach.

You could take I4 to Daytona and then go down to Cocoa to avoid the tolls, but its out of the way. It's better to pay the money for the straight shot to Cocoa.

yes cocoa beach is adjacent to kenedy space center. Its nice beach, make sure you hit up Ron Jon Surf Shop and get tourist shirts. And pay the tolls, its worth your time to pay rather than sit in traffic. And to all the tourists who drive in Florida

DON'T CUT ACROSS "SUN PASS" LANES AT TOLL BOOTHS

its really annoying to slam on your brakes cause toursits from bumtown iowa who've never seen a toll booth in their life cut across 7 lanes of traffic

WOW! You mean there is somewhere in the USA that doesnt charge you tolls??? They just recently closed the McKinley Bridge gets you from Illinois to Missouri it was a toll bridge built about 70 yrs ago...charged you 50 cents each way to ruin your shocks, struts, tires, etc...until MODOT (dept. transportation) decided it was too dangerous for vehicles to be on! yep...one day they just decided "Whoa...this bridge is about to fall into the Mississippi" so at least you all are getting whats being paid for! LOL

Unless things have changed in the last 5 years, the total for tolls each way on the BeeLine [SR528] should be $2.25.

I know that when I drive from Atlanta to Orlando, I use the Turnpike, and from Wildwood to Orlando it's only $2.50 in tolls... Nothing too outrageous.

I'm just glad that the Illinois tollways are no where NEAR either my hometown or my college town, and I can manage to get downtown with out hitting any!

Cocoa Beach is nice, but if you want a disney resort, check out Vero Beach. take A-1-A south, a great scenic route, and check out Disney's resort there. Or Cocoa beach is a good time too! the ron john surf shop is always a good hour or two of fun!

enjoy! I am so jealous!:sohappy:

hey FanofDisney1981....are you underwater??? The toll bridge we had here is now shut down..but most people that worked on the east side (all of Illinois) used it daily...$1.00 a day, every day, then all of a sudden its closed down! Now commuters have to go all the way around...adding at least half an hour to the commute...even more now that several of the bridges are closed due to the fact that the roads are under water from the flooded Mississippi RIver...cant wait til the 25th...I am soooo ready for some sunny days, more or less dry...short showers ok not major all day downpours!

I guess I'm lucky living here in the Cincinnati area, we don't have tolls anyway here and I've never really experience tolls unless we go to Florida or Chicago.

nope, not underwater, just south. Champaign and Kankakee use I-57, which turns into the Ryan, and then off at Lake Shore. THough, construction is crazy there, and there are some death defying lane switches that have to take place.

But If I want to go anywhere in the east of chicago, I have to take 294. insane!

which roads are now closed?

Well I am close to StLouis...so we have no use of I-170 getting to the airport used to be a half hour thing...now its an hour and half thing...hope it gets better before next Sat...when we fly to Disney! No use of 367, 270, part of Illinois Rt 3, Rt 143 & Rt 100. we had some idiots last night about 10pm go around the bridge baricades and try to drive across the bridge...didnt make it....got stuck had to abandon their truck, get help out of the Mississippi and then got ticketed for using the bridge...they should just be grateful to be alive that Mississippi is a mean one when shes out of the banks...I feel so sorry for all of the people whos homes are now under water~
