Bad disneyworld trip? Anyone except us?

Hi! New here and wanted to introduce myself! My name is Dalayney, I live in the midwest w/my hubby and 6yr old son! I first want to give you a small trip report of our very first trip to Disneyworld back in 2002.... and let you know WE ARE GOING BACK IN 6 days/21hours...... and there is a big reason WHY we are going back.....

Ok.... We went to D.W. in 2002 with my inlaws, my hubby's 21yr old sister and her college roomate. My first time, I almost cried just looking at the castle and couldn't WAIT to get into the gates! My hubby warned me not to get too excited.... as even though Disneyworld is a dream vacation...... any vacation with his step dad is a nightmare...... and I am like, "Ya, whatever, This is Disney world!"

First sign of trouble.... this trip was a christmas/birthday gift for us and our son who had just turned three in Jan. (we went in March) They insisted on paying for everything. How wonderful and generous of them! Now FIL (father in law) is retired military, and wanted to try and get active military tickets, because at the time, they were alot cheaper..... so he wanted his college aged daughter and roomate to go up to people who might look military and see if they could buy us tickets at their price.... So basically, he wanted to "pimp" out his daughters to get cheap ticket prices..... and at the last minute they said, No way! So we end up at the front gate of Disney paying full price..... so then, he LIES to the front gate and tells them my son is only 2. Now.... my son at the age of three looks like he's 5! He's a tall kid. The ticket guy yells out at me, "What year was your son born?" Of course I tell him the truth! and then my FIL gets a good "We don't like liars at Disney world sir. I suggest you buy him a ticket now." So when we get in the park, my FIL lays into me, telling me how slow I am and can't I "think faster than that?" ......
Ok,.... we're in the park and they literally are in a dead run right past main street to get fast passes to all the big rides. Hubby's sister has this system that we just HAVE to follow... And we have a three yr. old in tow who wants to stop and see Mickey and all the characters...... Nope..... So, all we do is big rides for about 3-4 hours.... and then I said, that's it.... we need a break, and we haven't done anything for Hunter. (he's three)
Let alone it's our first trip! We want to soak it in, see stuff! Go at our own pace! Everytime we would have to stop to change Hunter's diaper, we would get attitude and they would get all torked off because we were wasting time. (20 min. average everytime we had to stop) We kept telling them, "Just go! We'll meet up with you later, but everyone in the group refused to break up." It was awful. So we wanted to do Dumbo, Pooh ride.... stuff that our child would enjoy..... and there was FIL and his sister and roomate.....rolling their eyes and pouting and acting like twits because we weren't going where THEY wanted to go, and weren't doing what THEY wanted to do...... Poor MIL (mother in law) was just trying to get us to not kill each other.... I felt so sorry for her....
So that is about how the whole week went..... rush rush rush, forget trying to do anything for Hunter...... EPCOT: We wanted to eat at the italian place, FIL would say, "Oh, no you don't, we're eating at the fish and chip place." (we don't like seafood) We said, "That's fine, go ahead, we'll meet up with you later." and he would get all torked off at us....

I have never met a group of people that could literally suck all the fun and joy out of the happiest place on earth! At AK,my hubby finally freaked out on them and told them, that's it. We'll meet you at such and such place in 4 hours, and we stomped off. (it was quite amusing as he is a pretty quiet guy.) :)
I don't mean to sound so ungrateful, but the trip was awful..... only because of the company we were with. (besides MIL, she is a doll) We could SEE the potential of Disneyworld..... could see how magical it was...... But between FIL and snotty sister and her roomate, it was almost torture....
SO!!!! Present day here! We are going in 6 days!!! We will be gone from 16th-27th! We are literally bouncing off the walls as it is OUR vacation, we will go at OUR pace, and we will actually get to see the parks..... not just run through them at a marathon pace for 6 days! I will probably cry when we see the castle. (even if it's covered up or blocked off....hee hee.) And I will be sure and give the full wonderful report when I get back.:)

Now, does anyone else have trip horror stories? Are we the only ones? LOL..... Dalayney

Kinda sounds a trip that l took with our family in 92. My uncle and aunt live in south florida so they have the chance to go just about anytime being only 3-4 hours away. Well in 92 we decided to fly down to florida, and visit having not been there since for years. Well my uncle at the time lost his job, and we thought to cheer him up we said lets goto orlando and we'll treat you to the parks. Well first went to universal studios, first year of back to the future the ride, and thought it's a cool park, but in the back of my mind it's not disney world. Then we voted to goto Epcot, and they bragged how nice it was, which it was. (MK will always be #1 in my book) First ride was SSE which was so cool, can still remember the snoring monk, lol. Then it was the one where the seat line up and train there way though the dinnosaurs, which was only something you can ride at disney, even though i'm no fan of dinosaurs,i thought it was cool. Then at the time it was one on my favorites was onto Horizons (rip  ) if i remember l think l rode it three times and loved to choose where l wanted to live,i know because i always choose to live under the sea, rather than space. Then off to was World of motion, now called test track, was cool in itself. Then world showcase loved the viking boat ride and then being sent backwards toward the falls,oh that was cool, sorry but the showcase with movies bored me,was beat buy the time we saw them all, anyway that evening l bought a hat which l still own that celebrated disney worlds 25th anniversery and had the castle in the background and flashed rainbow colors and l thought so cool. Well my uncle saw me in it and laughed and told people standing around for the fireworks in a sarcastic/mocking voice "hey everyone look at the big baby in the babys hat with blinking lights" Well thats when a crowd started into a roar of laughter, boy still hurts so many years later, l forgave him now,but at the time i was speechless. Ok last day of our trip we all agreed except for one (uncle) that were going to the greastest of all parks,WALT DISNEYS WORLD MAGIC KINGDOM :sohappy: Well my uncle threw a fit and said that he's not going to no "babies park, for little babies" thank god majority ruled and we went. But he was so mad caused we were there that he made suck an unpleasent day at the magic kingdom that it's the first time l really didn't have a good time and wanted to go. Who knew it was the last time i'd ride two or three of my favorite rides that are no longer there (20k,toad,skyway) Well i wasn't able to return to disney until july of 03 (solo) and was ticked cause l missed the last tour of keys to the kingdom (darn off site hotel bus) by 10 minutes. But made the best of and can't wait till this june/july to relive some of the memories, only wish i can find a special lady to share it with. But that visit had to be my worst trip at disney, what ticks me off is my uncle and family been there several times since then on florida residents discounts, but being the christian guy that l am, l forgave him, just harder to forget at times. Well sorry to bore ya and ramble on,keep up the great posts and updates.

I find the bigger the group, the bigger the hastle. When it comes to fun I like a few tight knit people and that;s it, but that's just me.

It is absolutely true that your enjoyment of a WDW trip is directly linked to your travel companions.

I have 2 friends from high school that I get together with every winter. (We graduated in 1976, and we've known each other since 4th grade.)

As much as I love them and love their company, doing WDW with them would be a nightmare.

Both of them see it as a once in a lifetime obligation if you have children.

To be fair, their vacation preferences are more towards rock climbing and skiing. Personally, I find the outdoors just too real.

Well hopefully you'll have a better time this year without the in-laws. And hopefully that unprofessional CM isn't working there anymore too! To me, the most appalling part of your trip report was that CM's comment, "We don't like liars at Disneyworld sir." I honestly can't think of any scenario where that type of remark would be acceptable. Grounds for dismissal as far as I'm concerned.

"To me, the most appalling part of your trip report was that CM's comment, ""

When the CM said it, he said it while he was kinda chuckling, but he was SO right on about it. My FIL got caught in an out and out lie....... and I kinda was actually happy about it because he always tries to get away w/poo like that.

Ok.... so I have a question..... when there is a HUGE question about the child's age, do they just take the parents word for it that they are 2 and under? Can they dispute it like the CM sort of did?

What a terrible assumption though, that Disneyworld is just for children....... My hubby and I are now officially "addicted". And we're already planning on going back right before christmas in 2006.

Dalayney, I think that every WDW trip has their ups and downs, but your's was pretty bad. Luckily for me, my downs are from some vehicle problems or my kids' temper tantrums. Hopefully you'll have better luck this time. Keep us posted and have a Magical trip.

I don't doubt that the CM was technically correct in accusing your father in law of lying. But to make a remark such as, "We don't like liars at Disney World, sir" is so unbelievably unprofessional, it is completely unacceptable. This is not someone who should be working with the public. Simply put, that is just not the appropriate way to handle that type of situation.

dalayney, so sorry to hear about your first trip! Glad to hear that it didn't taint your image of Disney, though!
I'm sure most of us here have had at least one trip that hasn't gone as wonderfully as expected, myself included (though mine was no where near as bad as yours)
One of my bad experiences was getting food poisoning for the first time ever on the last night of our visit.
Probably the worst trip I've ever experienced was when I took my "best friend" as a graduation present. She's really not a Disney person, apparently. All she wanted to do was lay-out by the pool. In the very middle of the trip she lost her park ticket (which we paid for) and made it seem like it was no big deal. I made her tell my parents who took it a lot better than I thought they would. Luckily Mom had the receipt on her and Disney replaced the ticket. Then my friend lost her brand new camera on the very last bus ride of our trip. We immediately reported it to Lost & Found and again my friend was lucky. Disney found the camera a day or two later and sent it to her home - the film was still in it and everything. Other than that, any time I asked her if she wanted to do something (go on an attraction, etc) her usual responce was "Well, you can if you want to. It doesn't really matter to me." It was her first trip to Florida, not to mention Disney World; I was expecting her to be a little more enthusiastic. Needless to say, I was very disappointed and very ready for the end of that trip.
