Backpacks in the parks: what do you do with them?

No trouble in Disney but Universal,Busch Gardens, and Sea World will make you put your bags in a locker for certain rides.Busch Gardens will allow a pack.

At Universal, they had free lockers for the rides that required you to leave personal belongings off the ride. They're situated at the entrance to the ride and there was usually a park employee that would look for things that needed to be locked up before the person got in line. Also Universal has a cool Thumbprint security system on their lockers. Always had fun playing with it. :)

You mean i walked in this long line and now you tell me this :fork:

I know at Universal the Men in Black ride clearly states the fact that all carry on bags must be put in a locker before you even get in line for the ride and the lockers are located right next to the ride. There are numerous signs.

When you are starting to think of bringing in a bag with wheels, I think you really need to reevaluate what you are packing to see if you can eliminate a few things. I've seen folks dragging them through the parks and then squeezing on a ride with the bag and I mean squeezing, some of the Fantasyland rides aren't that big seat area wise.

From my understanding it was free for an hour or so then you had to pay.

I was at IOA and we had some type of pass where you go to the exit of a ride, something like that and thats where I was told.

Going through that stroller stage now but I used to use a samsonite back pack that was designed for laptop computers...it had thick padding and lots of nooks for trinkets and stuff....I don't know about anybody else but I like the backpack it keeps me from slouching...but you do need to be careful in shops and around tight knit groups of people until you have gotten used to having it behind you.

Frankly, if youre brining so much stuff that you need something that rolls, you're brining too much stuff in. Its Disneyworld. You dont need a sherpa or a mountain guide, really....

Agreed! Really, if you need a bunch of stuff on hand, just get a locker. The rest - camera, money, etc. - shouldn't take all that much room. I use a very small "purse" backpack just for ease of carrying around my camera and stuff and even then, it's near empty. (And annoying after awhile!)

You need less then you think.

ps: travel size things are a great option too for things you think you might not be able to live without. Cuts down on carryon luggage size for walking around the parks. ;)

I always carry a backpack into the parks with me..and was amazed how it fit into the seemingly small mesh bag thing on Mission:Space. Talk about cramming.

It's been quite a while since I was at UO or IOA, but I do recall the lockers at MIB were free for a certain period of time.

I like using the lockers to keep a backpack with sunscreen, tissues, bottled water and jackets. It sure beats going all the way back to your car or hotel room for these items. Plus it can save a TON of money to bring your own bottled water into the park. Not to mention your stuff stays much cooler in a locker than in a car baking in the sun.

If I'm not mistaken, the lockers are $5/day + a $2 refundable deposit for the key. If you park hop, they give you a voucher and your $2 deposit to give to the locker people at the next park.

Maybe this has changed - we haven't been in more than a year, sadly.

Why bother getting a room then?

How does a padded backpack make you tired? If so, you are DEFINITELY carrying WAYY too much stuff.

Good one, I agree, you don't need a room, just carry everything around with you, since you basically are anyway!!

Have you seen some of those backpacks people carry into the parks, they are at least a foot wide because they are always full expanded and the person carrying it always looks like if he got hit with even a feather he'd fall over with it. Also, many people forget they have this HUGE thing attached to them and are not careful when walking and turning around in crowds, can't tell you how many times I've been hit by them.

and for rides where you cant bring them along with you (i.e. rock n roller) they have lockers

Truly?
Are you talking about lockers at the rides, because I never have seen them.

And for my 2 cents, I have found back packs to always be okay on rock n rollercoaster, I just loop the straps over my legs and have my legs over the bag to insure it stays in, but as the CM's will tell you the gravity from the coaster should prevent it from falling out (although I've always been extreamly paranoid and have made sure to be extra careful and holding onto my bag or purse.)

I carry a backpack with me every single day in the parks, and have taken it on every single ride as well. Most places give you enough room in front of you to put them by your feet, there are only a few that make it difficult. I have only had trouble on Space Mountain (no space near feet) and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster (obvious reasons). They may have been tougher, but I still have done it and will do it for as long as I visit the parks. As long as you don't make your bag gigantic you will have no problem.

Hey, I have what may seem like a stupid question. On my past trips to the parks, I either had my yougest DD in a stroller, so we put all our junk underneath, or else everyone just stuffed his and her pants/ packs full of stuff.

This time, I'm thinking of taking a small backpack to put things in (not valuables). But then I thought, "hey, what will I do with it when I go on the rides?"

So, I thought I'd ask here. What do you do with your backpack when you go on rides?

We all have Nike type nylon backpacks to carry our stuff. By using more than one pack its not bulky. When I go on a ride I take it off and put ly leg thru the strings and hold it on my legs (on coaster type rides) or have it next to me (on a BuzzLightyear type ride). I've never had a problem.

Have you thought about getting a ROLLING backpack? That's what we did on our first non-stroller trip. It was wonderful... your shoulders will get tired with a regular backpack... but not if it rolls along behind you. Just a thought...

Last year I got hit by one of these each day, by the same guy. He thought it was funny, I didn't.

I love my little "string bag" too - so lightweight, but holds EVERYTHING from water to jackets to dry shoes and socks.

I don't put my feet through the straps anymore though. My son suggested that on RnRRC, but when the ride was over, I got all tangled up and:
1) Held up the line trying to board
2) Nearly broke my neck
3) Seriously embarrassed myself.

Now I just hold tight.

I'm short just like you, and I wear glasses, and have had my glasses knocked off my face by obtrusive people like that. I have learned to "protect" my head/face by putting my hand up. Same thing with walking behind someone and almost getting an elbow in the face.

I've been run over, had my glasses knocked off, burned by a cigarette and almost had my youngest (then 18 months old) knocked out of my arms because somebody "just had to grab" that Mickey doll off a table because it was "too cute".

No matter what size backpack you choose, try to be aware of the other people around you.
