Backlot Tour Closing?

I don't remember any information Backlot Tour on closing this year outside the refurbishment already mentioned unless this is a cost cutting measure that Drew, WDW1974, Dave, Martin, and Lee don't know about.

It wouldn't make any sense for Backlot Tour being closing getting replace by an attraction at this time since Cars Land was scrapped. While there are plans for Star Wars Land, they are not supposed to be going to Streets of America.

That's why I was so confused! I had checked the refurb calendar when I was booking my trip and didn't see it there at all.

Hi All,

According to Disney's Website, there are "No times available" for Backlot tour beginning on July 13 2014. Is this part of the closures that are rumored for DHS? There are dates listed for 7/12, but then none through any of the dates listed (December)

What's up?
But honestly, if it has anything to do with @Drew1981 - maybe they are closing the area down early or something for Frozen firework prepwork. Test out a different area that doesn't force the closure of two attractions.

Huh I just checked the site myself and it's listed as closed. I wonder if it's a website glitch or if it's actually going to be closed. I'm bringing two new people to WDW this year who haven't been before and was hoping to show them the backlot as one of them loves movie props. Granted Catastrophe Canyon is outdated as practical effects aren't really used anymore.

Even when I was a kid, I knew the Backlot Tour ripped off Universal Studios, only it wasn't good aside from the Rocketeer, Roger Rabbit and Dick Tracy stuff, and pieces of the Death Star when you exit. Catastrophe Canyon = Earthquake.

I honestly always kinda enjoyed this ride. I'm in the very very limited minority I guess. But the pre-show filming scene is hilarious sometimes! Also the truck scene is always fun to go through. I do agree that the rest of the area is boring and outdated. I think we these 2 scenes, they should just add a bunch of show buildings going through different effects scenes like the truck & rain scene to show guests how special effects are used.

I was going to say go through different movies, but we already have the great movie ride for that. And it still needs to be worked on. I don't care what everyone says on here, those movies are old and my generation knows nothing about almost any black and white movie in the world xD

I say shut down the whole park. Open it up again when they've gotten their **** together.

I actually kind of agree with this. DHS needs so much help it would be better for Disney in the long run to go ahead and gut most of the park exceptions being the Hollywood section with RnR and ToT and Star Tours. Go ahead and put in Star Wars Land or a section dedicated to Lucas films, a real Pixar Place area and a Disney Animation Studios area. The park would be packed when it reopened IMO.

Most likely. But it's the truth.
I agree I suppose but I'm only five years older than you and I have seen every film in the Great Movie Ride. It definitely needs a major overhaul but some of the movies in there are classics and should be seen by everyone. What I hate about today's young generation is just because something is old, it makes it automatically bad and boring and no one evens gives the classics a chance which is a shame. They are missing out.

Which is also funny because I was talking to my friend who is 18 about the new Godzilla remake and she said it wasn't as good as the original and I was shocked she had seen the original Japanese 1954 film but turns out she thought the 1998 American remake was the original :banghead: I wasn't amused.

I like the Backot Tour too! When taken for what it is, not for what it once was, it is a fine enough experience. :)

This however is nonsense. None of us here were around when Black and White movies were still common. (Except maybe @Goofyernmost , who was born in 1901).

Moreover, as a generalisation, I find the current crop of youngsters very interested in the world about them. The cultural pendulum has swung back to insatiable appetite for all things cultural. Especially authentic experiences. The timeless movie classic is hipper than ever, as is independent and arthouse.

HAH xD Well spoken!

I'm not saying I don't particularly appreciate the old movies, but I do not know a single friend who has seen Gone with the Wind, Tarzan, Singing in the Rain, or a majority of the other films. Heck, even Fantasia. Unless they took a music class in high school.

But, maybe i'm just too young to realize it at the moment. Maybe everybody ends up watching these movies in their 20s and 30s eventually? I dunno! Haha, I just can't picture too many people walking out of the great movie ride my age saying "Man.. I remember The Public Enemy! I loved that movie!" Because teenagers just really don't want to appreciate classic movies.
