Back To The Future/Space Mountain?

I've been told that if I went on the Back To The Future ride at Universal and was fine, I would also be ok on Space Mountain, a ride I've always skipped. Does anyone agree?

They are really two totally different rides. Back to the Future is a motion simulator similar to Star Tours (at MGM) or Body Wars (at Epcot). Space Mountain is what I consider a mild roller coaster with a couple of small drops and some tight turns. Have you been on any coasters? Both of the MK coasters (Thunder Mountain and Space Mountain) are pretty mild, so if you've been on any other coasters without problems, these should be no problem either.

Personally I would say that Back To The Future is a good bit rougher than Space Mountain.

Has anybody else noticed that BTTF needs a serious rehab? We were there in September and it looked really dated, especially the screen that had loads of scratches / marks on it.

If you've ever been to the Jersey shore boardwalks there's a ride that's called a wildmouse, but over the years they've come up with other names, but it still boils down to the same type of ride, SM is the same thing minus the big drops, pretty mild ride, the only thing that make's it alittle more of a thrill is the fact that it's in the dark, if you ever saw it with the lights on from the TTA you would say, that's it?, but still it is a great ride, something I always try to get on at least once while we are there. 19 days and counting........ can't wait, can't wait:sohappy: :sohappy: :sohappy:

the last time i was on Back to the Future I hit my head so hard because of the jolting that my hair clip stabbed me and there was bleeding. it was not good.

I am also of the opinion that BttF is rougher than SM

but yes, they are completely different rides...but i've never hit my head on Space

The Wild Mouse, that brought back some memories. Hey Jersey, lets get the Golden Nugget running .

Space Mountain is a little shaky, and there are some sudden directional changes, but if you could handle the other "thrill rides" in the area like BTTF you shouldn't have any problems.

Personally, I can't stand Space Mountain. It absolutely killed my neck. I have some damage in my neck from childhood but everyone told me it was tamer then Big Thunder (which I love) so I rode it. Big mistake. It jars you around like mad. It's also very tight, close quarters in the dark so if you're claustrophobic, I'd pass.

I don't like coasters. At all. And I don't like thrill rides. So for me, SM is a huge pass. But it's more what your thoughts on coasters are as opposed to simulators. I rode BttF: The Ride dozens of times (well over ten years ago) without problems but SM was past the point of comfort for me.

edit: If you're worried about it, ride it early in the day. It's actually slower in the morning then at night. As it runs all day, the track gets hotter and actually causes a noticable difference in speed.

I also have to agree, BTTF is kind of rough, compared to some simulators

BTTF at Universal Studios is a bit rough. Although, I remember it being alot smoother when I went on it a few years ago. When I went on BTTF just a couple of weeks ago, I felt a little woozy towards the end of the ride. As soon as I got off the ride and walked away, I was fine.

BTW - Hello everyone! I thought I'd stop in and say "Hello!" - this semester has been hammering me with research papers and lots of reading!

Riding BTTF is about like wearing a football helmet and being hit over the head with a sledgehammer. Don't get me wrong I like the attraction alot and it has even grown more on me with repeat rides, but it is way to rough on the whiplash side. If you can handle it, you should be fine with Space Mountain.

Back to the Future is the only ride to have ever given me a concussion and the only ride without drops to have given me motion sickness.:brick: :hurl:

As long as you sit up and keep your head forward until Space Mountain is completely over, you should be fine. We find BTTF much rougher than SM.

Back to the Future is a painful experience and a very poor simulator ride to boot. When the movement on the screen indicates you're veering left, that's what should happen with the car. Unfortunately, I've noticed it seems to be programmed to throw you violently in some completely random-seeming direction. It doesn't have the smoothness of Star Tours or even Body Wars (and many think that's pretty rough), and consequently leaves everyone I've ridden it with feeling like they've survived a head-on car wreck...myself included. It's yet another example of why Universal attractions (with maybe the exception of Spider-man) can't stack up to Disney attractions. If I wanted whiplash, I could give it to myself without having to pay a $50 entrance fee.
The Space Mountain at Disney World is a bit rougher than the one at Disneyland (especially now that the rehab has taken place here in California), but it's still incredibly tame by roller coaster standards. As has been already mentioned, it's really only the darkness that bothers some people, since they cannot anticipate the turns before they happen. However, if you request to sit in the front, you can usually make out enough to know which direction to orient yourself to anticipate the drop or curve.

Or you could ride it thousands of times and have the track layout memorized, like me! :hammer:

Compare Back To The Future with Star Tours - but BTTF is not as smooth as ST. The two are Motion Simulators - the compartment / carriage only moves about an axis and forward motion is simulated by the film projected onto a screen 'fooling' the brain into believing that it is moving.
Space Mountain is a coaster ride - there is no comparison between the two types.
Incidently, I can ride Space Mountain all day without any ill effects - but put me on BTTF or ST more than once and watch me turn green :o

Space Mountain is much more easily compared to Big Thunder Mountain than Back to the Future. Its a mild coaster. If you go on BTMRR you get more of this up/down cracking the whip effect. Quick, short changes in altitude that have this mild, out of seat feeling. At Space Mountain, most of the jarring motion comes from side-to-side direction changes, though that may be because you are not expecting the motion, and on BTMRR you are. I suggest that you go on BTMRR first, and if you are ok with that, imagine going on something like that in the dark, even trying it out first with your eyes closed. SM is fun. Light on the thrills, but fun and light-hearted.
