I'm happy Lasseter has re-established the 2D department at Disney, but don't forget that this is also the department that gave us such great films as the Black Cauldron (flop) and Treasure Planet, Home on the Range and Atlantis (major financial flops).
This department in the post-Pocahontas years really took a nose dive quality wise. Even Pocahontas, which was supposed to be Disney greatest film became a dissapointment after it failed to live up to the "not-supposed-to-be-great" Lion King. Things changed drastically, but I also believe that the studio at that point was taking great chances with a lot of their films which is something that Walt generally did. They were pushing the envelope on a lot of things...even John Silver from Treasure Planet (the registration issues of having to line that 3D arm up to the 2D body was a nightmare when they first started.)
I think that the downfall fell somewhere amongst the viewers and the overload of animated cartoons that came after Lion King. Studios popped up everywhere and really flooded the market and soon enough, some of these studios were churning out junk and Disney was trying to keep up so in turn, some of the movies they green-lit and put out did not fare as well as past attempts.
I'm very excited for Rapunzel though...the stuff I've seen from it is absolutely georgeous and is the best looking 3D stuff that I've ever laid my eyes on. Glen Keane has truly pushed 3D in a direction that it hasn't gone before.
