Avengers Endgame Spoiler Discussion

I've got a ton of thoughts on Endgame but I'll start off with this one: it's really the first movie I can think of off the top of my head that was truly a "didn't see the earlier ones? Too bad." Like if this was your first movie, you started off with a guy with a bow training his kids, then two randos in space being saved by a glowing woman. Other series have on-boarding sequences so the audience isn't too lost; the biggest example is obviously the opening crawl but then even in the Avengers you get the teaming up sequence, and even before that there's the action prologue establishing the characters. Here, it's "too bad, you had 11 years to catch up on it, it's on you."

And it's doing gangbusters.

It's incredible to witness.

That’s where i’m hoping we are headed with the MCU! Imagine the possibilities!

We live in an amazing time friends. For so many of us, our childhood fantasy, comic book, and sci-fi dreams are becoming reality on the big screen and in the parks...and there is no end in sight to this trend. The economy is doing well. We live in relative peace. Now If only we could figure out how to treat each other with a little more dignity and respect we would truly be living in a golden age.

Not to be too pessimist...but I think that might be too geek for Main Street financial success.
Until humans evolve past our animal instincts, don’t bet on it.

All of the problems keeping society from acting fully as one can be boiled down to pack mentality, survival of the fittest, and fighting for dominance. Just like our animal brethren. The only thing keeping us from being more at each other’s throats is the relative easy life we have compared to other inhabitants of our planet thanks to our amazing intellect and problem solving skills. We still fight, but most of us don’t have to fight as much for resources. You think it’s bad now? Just wait for a catastrophic event that could potentially take out modern society. We’ll go back to caveman behavior a lot quicker than some would like to think.

Anyway, back to Endgame. Sorry if I got too “real” there.

You are correct. I don’t see any daily guarantees of human “evolution”. But I don’t want to go to the sad truth either 😉

And really, I think that is its strongest asset. It was such a reward for the people who put in the time with the MCU. If they tried to "catch" people up it really wouldnt work. They did just enough so casual MCU followers wouldn't have a problem. I think it's a big difference between marvel and DC. Marvel trusts its audience and doesn't need to spell everything out. While DC decided, hey, I think we need to show Bruce Waynes parents get killed, again.

Alrighty, third viewing note time!

  • The person I went with didn’t see Captain Marvel, so I was quickly filling him in during the trailers
  • I learned shortly into the film that the other person I was seated next to hadn’t seen Infinity War, so his daughter (?) was filling him in on everything he missed. I’ll forgive not seeing some of the solo films, but Infinity War?
  • After reading that the Russos considered ending IW with Clint losing his family, rather than the other dusted scenes, I think that would have made an interesting dynamic. Here’s a character that we haven’t seen since 2016, who has not been involved in the battles against Thanos, and he quickly loses his family and has no idea why.
  • So, you sit through Infinity War, you see Fury’s pager- THE LAST SHOT OF THE FILM- sending a signal to an unknown hero, you choose not to see Captain Marvel, and then you come to find out in this movie that the pager is never mentioned. I’m sorry, Russos, but including the CM credits scene where Carol arrived at Avengers HQ would have been helpful.
  • I’d read that the opening Marvel logo doesn’t have the dusted heroes included (I can’t remember if someone in here mentioned that or not). However, I didn’t expect the scene locations to still be there, just without the characters. That was kind of neat.
  • Very curious as to what kind of platform shoes RDJ was wearing in his first scene with Evans, as they were the same height
  • Paul Rudd is an underrated gem in this franchise. Between his jokes and the loss of Hope hanging over him, he showed more range than usual, and I hope to see him pop up in more MCU films
  • A lot of films are referenced, most in subtle ways, including Iron Man 2. Tony finding out time travel can work was super similar to the scene in IM2 where he discovers Howard had created an element for him
  • So, most characters have had arcs in the franchise- what is Rhodey’s? He’s been around longer than Sam, and had more screentime, but does he have a story arc of his own?
  • I look forward to being able to pause the movie in the 1970 scene to see what else was being kept in the bunker.
  • The 1970 scene is also too long and really only exists to show Peggy still having some feelings for Steve and for Tony to get closure with his father (which he technically got back in Iron Man 2)
  • I came to accept Natasha’s death last night, fwiw.
  • Oh, the mountain on Vormir didn’t melt, you can still see it in the background when Clint is holding the soul stone. So chalk it up to space magic for how Clint and Thanos got off the mountain with the stone in their hands
  • There are theories that Gamora and Natasha are both trapped in the soul stone, and it’s currently unknown if the Gamora from 2014 was snapped with Thanos (it’s not like Tony would have known, he never met her). Based on what happened to the soul stone in the movie (2018 version was snapped out of existence, 2014 version was returned to Vormir), I’m going to guess that the theories are just that, theories.
  • Shout out to Clint Barton, only because the poor guy is going to need a lot of counseling after watching his family disappear, and then watch his best friend (who he once was tasked with killing) sacrifice her life for him. That said, Jeremy Renner better show up in the BW prequel, because he and ScarJo have an effortless chemistry between them, and I would hate to see that go away.
  • Oh I think Clint’s farm is in Maryland, if I read his truck’s license plate correctly
  • Scott Lang is now the only Avenger to not go to space
  • Oh speaking of space, I heard ‘there’s no gravity in space, how are they just walking around on the spaceship’. Someone must be really fun at parties 🙄
  • Howard the Duck walks out to fight Thanos with a huge machine gun. I kind of wish we had more of that.
  • Peter Parker is a 16 year old boy who is way out of his element here, and he should only stick to small crime until he’s an adult (which won’t happen but c’mon he’s just a kid).
  • When the big spaceship is firing on the remains of HQ- before Carol shows up- Rocket throws himself on top of Groot.
  • I’m going to say that again- RACCOON TRIED TO SHIELD HIS TREE SON
  • How they can de-age Steve Rogers- by doing exactly what happened to Scott Lang.
  • Missed opportunity- Carol and Quill have not been on Earth in 20-30 years until this movie. Kind of would have been nice to see some reactions from either of them to how much things have changed
  • I’ll end this on a light note- Drax is wearing a closed vest for Tony’s funeral, despite him saying shirts cause him discomfort in GotG2. Way to take one for the team, Drax
So where do the Avengers go from here? I’m sure Avengers 5 could happen in 4 years, but let’s take stock of the group we have (this is anyone who has been an official Avenger):
  • Tony- dead
  • Natasha- dead
  • Steve- retired
  • Clint- retired
  • Hulk: injured but healing (I presume)
  • Thor: traveling the galaxy but could easily come back
  • Rhodey: alive
  • Sam: alive
  • Wanda: alive
  • Vision: dead
  • Peter Parker: an actual child (I am really interested to see how things play out in Far From Home now, because Aunt May lost him for 5 years, and now he’s back in a post-snap world, and I just want to see how the world is handling this)
Now here are some potential new members:
  • Scott: he’s basically a part of the team now anyways
  • Hope: is a team with Scott
  • Dr. Strange: is Sorcerer Supreme, so he’s a little busy for Avenging
  • T’Challa: is king of Wakanda, probably does not have time for Avenging that often
  • Carol Danvers: seems to be more comfortable in space than on Earth
  • Bucky Barnes: alive
  • Valkyrie: new ruler of Asgard
Avengers 5 should be interesting, if it happens

I agree that they did what had to be done...and that was not shooting a movie with dumb downed basic backstory for every 17 year old in a Chinese theater.

This is where - ahem - other franchise have failed...not trusting an immense fandom to carry them to financial success.

Go with what works...instead of gimmicks and “fresh takes” and forced humor (though the butt jokes were stupid) and all sorts of other nonsense...

If you build it...they will come.

I’m sure Guardians 3 will show that Peter picked up a modern music player during his short time on earth.

A little something I made for anyone that thought of Team America during this movie, lol.

If you haven’t seen Team America, look up the “inevitable” scene. Can’t post it due to language ;)

I’ve seen the movie thrice at this point, but there’s still one logistical question I don’t know how was resolved.

Before they started the time heist, it was revealed that Hawkeye was carrying a shrunken Milano ship.

Hawkeye, Black Widow, Nebula, and Rhodes fly in the larger Milano to the planet from the opening credits of GOTG. They take off and go to the other planet with fan service Red Skull (I don’t remember the planet names).

This is where I miss the point of the tiny ship he carried with him. This isn’t a complaint, I just can’t figure out where in the plot this was resolved. Any enlightenment would help; I’m sure I’m missing a key detail.
