Avatar Land...think Disney regrets the idea?

I think its a terrible idea. They should have done something with Star Wars. I didn't even really care for Avatar. It hasn't done anything for our pop culture like Star Wars has and more importantly me or none of my friends even bring that movie up in discussion. Its not a movie that stuck with much of anyone I feel.

But if Disney is going to do anything with Star Wars, which is almost certain, they will likely do it in DHS since there are already Star Wars attractions there, so that still leaves AK needing something.

Another way to look at this is thinking of Avatar more as a land not really being based on the movie and not even trying to draw people who saw the movie. It would be similar in creating a ride like Maelstrom that has no connection to a movie or even Pirates and Haunted Mansion which were not originally based on a movie. It would just be a random idea creating a land based on something unique. I think we have all gotten caught up in the whole movie thing me inclded. There are many other rides that have been designed without a movie involved in any way.
Skimbob, I like your way of thinking on this, heck the land might even influence the films! I am going to reserve judgement to a degree and see what they cook up, that said, they have to be a little nervous about the sequals, the biggest selling point of the first was not the story, it was the viewing experience itself that gave it buzz, the first Real Good 3D

Pandora the Rides(s) will be dated within a few years, and the movies will be largely forgotten, since they're already pretty forgettable in the first place. The intelligent way to expand upon Animal Kingdom would have been to focus on the Lion King, the Jungle Book, and build that area for mythical creatures (historic, iconic mythical creatures, not Cameron's lame riffs) as was originally planned. Maybe Pandora could be re-tooled for a Fantasia area, complete with dragons, centaurs, unicorns and pegasuses (pegasi?) The merchandising alone for such an area could be fantastic. Have you guys ever noticed that the baby unicorns and pegasi (we'll go with that plural) in Fantasia look an awful lot like the My Little Pony characters? They're pastel-colored and multi-hued with big eyes and cute faces. Disney could sell a ton of plush based on them. As for Pandora...I don't think we'll see adorable plushes of the blue kitty cats anytime soon. Mostly because your average kid would consider that nightmare fuel. :D

And Tolkien just rolled over in his grave....

I bet he'd be appalled by Peter Jackson's version of his Hobbit book. I couldn't even make it all the way through the first film. First time I ever walked out of a movie. I went to Applebees and had some Riblets to assuage the pain...

JC did a ama today on reddit and someone did ask about AK stuff
"Well, Disney are doing a first-rate job designing it. It's going to be completely spectacular. It will be like being on Pandora. You will see real floating mountains. It's going to be a very magical experience just to be there and walk around. And the two rides will be absolute state of the art. But I don't how much they want to say about what those rides specifically will be, so I probably shouldn't say anymore than that. But from what I've seen so far, it will be amazing. I will be sad it's in Florida, because I won't be able to go a lot to it."

One would think that James Cameron, a man with passions for science and history, would actually give at least half a damn about subject-verb agreement...

Not to worry. I'm sure the YouTube guy who re-edited The Phantom Menace will condense down Jackson's Hobbit trilogy into one really spectacular hour-and-a-half long movie.

Also...the first Hobbit wasn't that bad for me. But Desolation of Smaug had me feeling nothing but hatred for Jackson for three days.

Here's why:

That is the final play from the 2013 Alabama-Auburn game. Both teams tied. Alabama cannot move the ball forward despite their best efforts, and with one second left on the clock, 'Bama decides to kick a fieldgoal and end it. But...that's not what happened.

Now, imagine you're either an Alabama or Auburn fan watching that game at home...and some jackass decided it would be funny to walk into the utility room and shut off all the electricity in the house as soon as the ball was kicked, just for giggles. You've just spent hours supporting your team, your adrenaline is pumping, you're waiting with baited breath to see how it's going to end....and some jackass ruins it for you.

With Desolation of Smaug, Peter Jackson was that jackass.
Smaug: "I AM FIRE....I AM...DEATH!"
Me: "Oh yeaaahhhh...here we GO....."
Bilbo: "What have we done?"
*screen goes black*
*some dude singing*
*credits*
Me: "??????"

I'll go along with what somebody said earlier in this post, put "Avatarland/World" @ DHS, but if they want to expand AK, add an Australia-themed section, or anything but a Sci-Fi movie whose plot is basically a rip-off of Pocohontas. It kind of throws the theming of the park right out the window, (granted that tacky Dino-Whateveryouwannacallit-land doesn't help)Plus, let's face facts, as great as it looks on paper, Beastly Kingdom is never going to happen!

I agree with those who have said they are just glad something new is going into AK...and so I will support it and look forward to it.

As of now, I personally think it's not the best idea. They will be slow in building it and, by then, everyone will just be frustrated at Disney for their slow pace and lack of innovation. But, we shall see!

I've never seen the movie and have no interest in seeing it either. I also have never seen or read a Harry Potter movie or book but still enjoyed the 1 ride Universal built at IOA. As long as it's not a meet and greet or a restaurant then I support anything Disney builds especially at AK. We are going for Christmas this year but will only be going to the MK and 1 other Disney park and it will NOT be AK and we will do both Universal parks again this year. My son will be 9 when we go so he's at the age when roller coasters and thrill rides are what he wants, he doesn't want to stand in line to get Princess autographs or pictures.

zero regrets
they re making 3 movies simultaneously, and releasing them starting in December 2016.... I could go into why avatar is a popular choice with anecdotal and actual evidence but we ve been through it already and why it s a perfect fit for DAK..this goes beyond avatar and keeping the park open later..brilliant on disneys part

I've never seen Avatar. Not my thing and really never had any interest. I am still excited to see the expansion in AK though. The proposed ideas and pictures that have been released look fantastic.

Haven't read all 4 pages so maybe this has been mentioned. Even if they have regrets it will be years before we know about it. Not until a higher up who's involved in the planning is long gone from the company. Even then it will most likely be off the record. Disney management HAS to know that this isn't being well received by the majority of it's hard core fans. Huge companies don't admit bad/risky planning easily, that would make them look bad on Wall St.

I saw Avatar on TV once, though it was ok, but I didn't have any desire to see it in person, but the thing that is disappointing to me about Avatar-land is that Disney has chosen to build an entire land in one of their parks dedicated to someone else's film/characters. The fact that they are not even going to bother to try and develop something based on their own films or something original, is really sad and kind of lame. They have this big chunk of land, in their "theme" park, but they are going to have someone else come in and do the "theming"? And no matter what anybody says, the sci-fi movie where human beings upload their brains into genetically engineered alien bodies... doesn't fit in a park that's supposed to be all about Animals
