August 21 Solar Eclipse

this eclipse was a farce. maybe it was personal ignorance, but the way everyone was carrying on i was expecting something MUCH different. they closed the animal trails in animal kingdom, closed tom sawyer island and announced they were turning on the lights around the parks...for what? reduced visibility? in my head i was imagining it was going to be pitch black outside with all of the school closings and carrying on. fedex sent emails saying packages would be delayed. what i got was something very similar to an overcast mid-afternoon day. what a joke. i'm sitting here days later still trying to figure out what all the "special precautions" and preparations were about. and fedex, you don't deliver on overcast days>?

Someone at Disney needs a geography lesson. And a science lesson. Even if they were in the middle of 100% eclipse, it would have been dark for something like 2 1/2 minutes. But they knew going into it that it wouldn't really get dark there. Definitely a head scratcher.

I live in Charleston, SC. Our schools are closed on eclipse day because our infrastructure can't handle the extra traffic. We are expected to get as many as 300,000 people.
I went to South Carolina for the eclipse, Santee in particular, and you are quite correct about the infrastructure not being able to deal with the increased traffic.

The hour and a half drive from the Georgia stateline to Santee took right at 2 hours. The same drive back took just over 6.

There is no question that there was a nation wide overreaction to this event. If you were not along the line of totality, you got a slight dimming equivalent to what you see during a thunderstorm or at dusk.

The experience along the line of totality was much different. It got dark. I am talking need your headlights on to drive, I can see stars in the sky dark.

I think a lot of this overreaction was due to the litigious nature of this country. Had Disney not taken every possible precaution, someone that stubbed their toe during the eclipse would run straight to a lawyer that would be more than happy to take the case.
