Attraction Sponsorship

Can someone tell me what a sponsor does? Why do some attractions (ex. Test Track) need sponsors and some don't? I'm curious about this. Do the sponsors pay the employees who work at their particular ride?

Also, if a attraction loses a sponsor, does Disney immediately decide to get rid of it at some point (ex Horizons :( ) ??

A sponsor puts up the money for the ride upkeep, and possibly building it too, in the case of M:S, correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Or help with the technology involved with the ride, e.g. HP and M:S...

CMs are Disney employees; they get paid by Disney I believe.

However, in some attractions' VIP lounges (TT - GM, SE - formerly AT&T, UOE - EXXMOB) there are employees who work in the VIP lounge who I believe are employed by their respective companies and not by Disney because I got one of their business cards once and it said nothing about Disney, just the name of the sponsoring company and "Guest Relations Epcot Park" or something like that...

I'm not positive...
