My (rather long-winded) 2 cc:

Spider-Man: no major misfires in my judgment--the film didn't try to re-invent the wheel, just handled the character the way he was meant to be and got most, if not all, of it right. It wasn't Shakespeare, but it wasn't meant to be. A VERY solid film that old and new fans alike can enjoy--I've seen it twice, and still wouldn't mind going again. The only legitimate complaints I've heard so far were that the soundtrack was lacking (true) and that the Goblin just wasn't that great a bad guy (that one's debatable; I thought Defoe was solid in the Osborne role--the Goblin character was a bit limited behind all that armor, but it didn't detract from the film, for me.) If they can find someone to put together a real soundtrack next time (Elfman had Batman pegged, but was only so-so on this picture), then the sequel (which is a must-see for me) could be even better (though only if the focus stays on Peter Parker and the film doesn't turn into a big-screen Power Rangers knockoff).

Episode II: Well, it's another Star Wars flick, and not a bad one, but I don't think it's as good as Spider-Man (and I don't think it'll bring in the same numbers). This was definitely better than Episode I, and Natalie Portman in that little white top--HELLO!! (You guys know what I'm talkin' about. ;)) However: the teenage Anakin just degenerates into a big whiner for seemingly no reason in more than one spot (does somebody need a nap??) and the story just doesn't have that much "oomph" to it. I know that the big battlescene between the droids and the clones was supposed to be really thrilling but--well--it wasn't. A decent flick with some pretty pictures and John Williams' always kick- score, but not quite filling. I'll probably go see it again (just 'cuz my Mom needs someone to go with her), but this one falls short of "great" status for me.

OK, I'm done now...

I agree

Your post is too long Wilt, so I'm not quoting it, but I do agree with you. I noticed you did forget to mention Kirsten Dunst. How did you put it.....oh yeah....HELLO!;)

As for Spiderman and Episode II, I still have to lean to Spiderman. I pretty much know what to expect with Star Wars. (Who doesn't with a PG rating?) Tobey on the other hand showed how Peter Parker can be on two opposite sides of the spectrum: and one moment he's this caring person who looks out for his family and friends, particularily MJ (again...HELLO!). His concern for the well being of his friends and family causes him to show his other side, the side where I have to say, REALLY kicks some . As long as director Sam Raimi and the writers of Spiderman 2, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, make sure to focus on Peter's stuggle living the life he has to live now instead of what he can do and does as a superhero, (See Batman 2 and all the Batman movies after them) I wouldn't be suprised if the only record they didn't break next time is their own.

Saw it last night...

I would have been at a 12:01 showing but none of the theatres would acknowledge anything (except in person) until the day before and by that time EVERYTHING was sold out. ed me off but anyway...That movie worked on so many levels. The thing that I think made my hair stand on end was the music. John Williams is brilliant. He winds all of his themes in at some point or another. Listen and you'll catch about 30 seconds of "Duel of the Fates" from Episode I (One of the best parts of that movie), multiple hints at and then the full blaring "Imperial March", "Luke's Theme" surfaces very briefly as well as a ton of others. That alone would have made the movie for me but we finally get to see why the Jedi Masters are revered for being so powerful (one specifically :animwink: ). Okay...I decided that Natalie Portman has to be one of the most gorgeous women ever (Present company on these boards excluded :D ).

I seriously think that this movie is my favorite of the entire series.

Acting skills were a bit choppy. As for the love scenes they did just what they were supposed to...Make us uncomfortable. The camera lingers and makes everything seem akward and out of sync which is exactly what this romance is. As for Anakin being a whiner...Maybe we're just being set up for when his son does the same thing, "...But I was going to Tachi Station to pick up some power converters."

All that aside though this movie was probably on par with the original 3 but the addition of the amazing musical ideas pushes it to the top of my list. Sorry this was so long. Later.

On my CG forum (full of guys from ILM, Sony, Dreamworks, Disney..etc..ya know..real filmmakers)...we have been discussing episode 2 in this thread::

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8137

Some of the reviews (Mine included) are quite harsh and down to earth because we looked past the "fanatic" views...here is what i posted::

The effects? Its ILM....do you expect crap? Of course not. But eyecandy..as nice as it is..is not what makes a movie...at least it shouldn't be.

The movie lacked depth...I felt like I was watching a 2 hour long demo reel. They kept flashing scenes by faster than you can absorb anything, and they didnt give you any change to get "attached" to the characters.

The movie would then randomly pull to a stand still when they un-necessarily long love scenes came into play. I know...I know..the love story is needed in the grand scheme of things, but does anyone else agree that it could have been done a lot more efficiantly and used less screen time?

Granted...the army of SW Fanatics out there don't need to "learn" the charactersor story...but think of it from a series standpoint..what if the original 3 films didnt exist? This movie would make little to no sence. Not good storytelling...

I personally think all the hype behind this movie was completly un-warranted. I personally think Spiderman was a better movie for my money (at least there was chemistry between the characters). And I personally feel the only thing keeping the new trillogy alive at this point are the die hard fanatics (you know who you are...thast right..you wearing the stormtrooper helmet).

I do have a bit of a nudging problem with the effects tho. They were too "clean". In some scenes everything was so obviously CG (especially the environments) that it pulled you completly out of the movie. The best effects are the ones you don't know are there...ILM used to be so good at that...when did they forget about that?

So overall...did I like the movie? Nope...i enjoyed watching it for the effects...but as I said above...thats not what should determine the quality of a film.

...oh..and natalie portman is "ok"..but i think after shes done with star wars her acting career is over...

It's just my opinion, but I think the story would be better if 4-6 didn't exist. I think that most people know what happens before 4-6 happens so 1-3's plots aren't going to be very good.

I think that Episode 3 will attract more people because it brings Darth Vader back and should introduce Luke and Leia back into the story as well as other characters that most people associate with 4-6.

I was channel surfing this afternoon and she was on Rosie. She is attending Harvard, majoring in Psych. That was interesting to note. Her birthday is June 9. She turns 21.

HA!

Alec Guinnes was already a very distinguished actor before star wars...

Carrie Fishers career took a massive nose dive after SW...

...and harrison ford got lucky..and I believe it was Indiana Jones that did more for him than han solo; )

I saw it for the 2nd time today...........

There still isn't anything from the film that bothers me.........like Episode I did. I think they did a great job on it.

I'm still ed about Jango Fett, I thought he could have went a little better(if you know what I mean SAM JACKSON) I was a little stunned after all those gadgets and he justs meltsdown like that!

Episode II is great, and Episode III is gonna be AMAZING!

I loved Natalie Portman in "Where the Heart is" I thought she and Ashley Judd did a great job, actually there were two around the same time with her in it, one with Susan Sarandon "anywhere but here" I think is the name of it. I'm probably getting the name of the movie mixed up.

I haven't ever seen any star wars movies though. Hubby and Daughter went today. Husband loved it, thought it was fantastic, but dd said " it was ok" .

Yoda is the man with a light sabre though. The bit i was most dissapointed with was the 'glimpses' of anakin's dark side. That laddie just needs a good kick up the . That aint being evil, thats being a spoilt brat!
