Well, since this worked out so well for the Freak, I thought I would steal a bit of his thunder..,As I have recently fallen into a decent paying job (ie. not at disney) I have decided it is time to purchase a new auto. I would appreciate the input of the fine forum members we have here, as well as any suggestions. Feel free to vote on the 4 that I have looked into, as well as tacking on anything else you deem vital.

I would say go with the VW...

Granted, I had problems with my VW and would never buy another one because of it...but the Nissan Sentra is still on the old platform and hasn't had many MAJOR changes in a few years. The Scion tC is WAY new and I can't really go on anything other than what I've read. My second choice would have been the Focus SVT...but...I really can't ever make myself tell someone to buy a Ford product.

So, the order of my choices.

VW GTi
Focus SVT
Scion tC (although, it gives the Focus a run for it's money because it's Toyota quality).
Nissan Sentra SE-R

(Oh, and it's ok...steal my thunder...you'll feel the wrath later ;) ) jk

I'd go for the VW or the Ford. The VW because it is newer and would most likely have a bit more of the warranty left. Curious as to how you left out the 1988 Grand National.

I'd stay away from the Ford. Any of the other three on your list are likely to be more reliable and longer lasting. My vote was for the VW, but only because the Sentra is my least favorite Nissan and I don't know much about the Scion. If it is truly Toyota quality, I might would change my vote, but the VW should make you happy, statistically speaking.

Hmm. According to this article, the Ford Focus is assembled in Hermosilla, Mexico. Which country's economy are you talking about, Judd? :p

The Country where the headquarters of the manufacturer are located.

Just another off the cuff statement. I realize that some foreign cars are made in the U.S. but those profits go back to the Country where the company is based out of. I think that Ford is still a US company. I do not know about SCION, but I am pretty sure Nissan is Japanese, and Volkswagon is German. So other than a tasty brat, some saki, and possibly a painful wedgie, where do you want your money going?

:king: - Proudly wearing the crown

*edit - By the way, the Wayne stamping facility is where my Uncle works.

But the whole essence of "buy american" is to buy products that are made in the usa. So when American companies close plants in the usa in favor of cheaper labor outside the usa does that not defeat the whole purpose of "buying american?"

What good does knowing Ford is still based in the US do to the consumer who is buying a vehicle assembled by mexicans who thinks it was assembled by someone in michigan as most people who buy Ford do?

Ford, as others, have reaped the benefits of unknowing consumers who buy their products thinking they are an american company in the traditional sense of the marketing tactic.

Now, for someone who DOES know they send jobs outside the borders, it makes even less sense.

I'd rather buy a Toyota/Honda/Subaru etc that was built by Americans than a Ford/GM product built by Mexicans etc.

Where the profits may go is really irrelevant to me. Millionaires will always exist, but the ebb and flow of jobs IS important to our economy.

All right, you have sucked me into your web, Judd!

For whom are you concerned, the American Workers (YAY! :sohappy: ) or the American Corporations (Boo! Rich Businesses! :fork: )?

The American Workers are going to their jobs at the Nissan manufacturing plants in Mississippi and Tennessee, the Toyota manufacturing plants in Kentucky and Alabama, and so forth. With their hard earned wages, they are putting a roof over their heads and food on their tables. They might even scrimp and save and take a vacation to WDW! It is not for me to say their efforts are not worthwhile, simply because they toil for a corporation whose owners are not United States citizens. Those American citizens and neighbors of yours and mine have just as much right to feel proud of the quality of the cars they are building as do the American workers employed by Ford or GM. If independent quality reports are to believed, they may have even more reason to be proud, at times. If those cars don't sell, their jobs are eliminated.

Speaking of eliminated jobs, what have those headquarters you earlier mentioned done to American workers in Michigan? Sacked and replaced by good people of Mexico and other foreign nations to cut expenses. The American Corporations have a higher duty to their owners/shareholders (no US citizenship required to be a shareholder) to maximize profits than to their American residents to provide jobs.

I just wanted to know which car I should get, not what political stance we all have on where the vehicles are built. I live right down the road from 2 of the big 3, and another 25 minute drive to DCX.

No worries, ArchiDanDisney, I think it was all in good humour. Tongue in cheek, off the cuff and just kidding around. I was just joking a bit (the evil corporation bit, for sure), and I have learned something here - Scion is a Toyota product, and will probably make a good car. All things being equal, newer is better, so I change my vote to the Scion.
