Apple's new iOS 6 coming out next week they will have their new app Passbook, which allows you to store gift cards, tickets, boarding passes, etc for participating companies.

Has anyone heard if Disney would be incorporating their gift cards, ticket passes, annual passes, etc into this feature app?

The gift card feature would be really convenient. You could load the card into app and then pull it up from your phone rather than carry the cards around.

If I'm not mistaken it will work with any gift card with a bar code on the back so its possible if not its a damn good idea

Pretty lame, actually. If Apple had included an NFC chip in the new iPhone then you could swipe your "ticket", "gift card" or "FastPass" right from your account through any turnstile or entry point and eliminate the need for paper or plastic media. As it is, you'll have to stop, have the barcode reader scan whatever image is on your Passbook screen, hold up the line because most Apple consumers are clueless with tech, and what a nightmare it'll be. More problems than solutions. Oh, well. Maybe next year with the iPhone 6?

Just because you don't like apple products you don't have to call people clueless. I'll take iOS over androids fragmented operating system any day. Apple didn't add NFC because there isn't a true standard yet. Even Verizon disabled it on all their phones. I'll take a phone where I know I'll get an update and I can take into a store for warranty issues, rather than sending into a manufacturer any day. I find it funny just because apple makes items user friendly doesn't make the user clueless.

In my experience, apps that use scannable barcodes on the iPhone are a little hit-or-miss. Sometimes they scan perfectly. Other times, they don't -- and you have to enter the number manually.

If they can overcome that, Passbook will be a killer app for sure.

I think the problem is the brightness of the screen in other apps. In Passbook the screen automatically adjusts to 100% brightness, then reduces to its initial value when you leave the app. The only App in the store that has Passbook functionality is Starbucks as of yet, and I don't have a card so I can't test it yet.

I honestly think NFC and passbook are great options, it'd be cool to leave your wallet in the room and only have to bring your phone, don't have to worry about losing anything but phone that way

I agree. This new phone is VERY underwhelming. They know people will eat it up just because and release a fully loaded version in a year like they did with the four. I'll wait.

When did this become iPhone or android central the original poster asked if passbook would work at DW no one asked anyone to critique the new iPhone.

Wow! I spent 10 years as a computer programmer and I am currently a technical auditor. My entire household is apple products.

What an ignorant, clueless thing to say!

How is that going to work when there is no standard for NFC for either Apple or Disney to use? Do you think you will be able to take any of the current devices that have NFC and just magically go through any turnstile with it? No chance. You need to be careful who you are calling clueless.

This is an interesting point. Disney in the past have tended to use their own systems and not integrate with much from the outside. But with the recent expansion of 'My Disney Experience' iPhone app, you never know.

I have a Touch on preorder (hope it's shipped early October since my trip is coming up) Since my employer supplies me with a cell, I'm hoping to be able to use the Touch in a wallet to eventually use the PassBook potential more and more as merchants become more involved with it.

However, I don't remember a scene in Horizons where someone paid for something using their "smart device". I guess if Apple can dream it, they really can do it.

I'm sure there may be a few opportunities for Disney to use PassBook for some specialty purposes but for major items like admission media, etc., Disney has clearly committed to RFID technology and they are all in on that investment. We've already seen testing of Next Gen FastPass which uses RFID, the resort room keys are being rapidly converted over to RFID and we've also seen admissions tests using RFID on ticket media. This is the way that Disney has chosen to go and they are making major investments in this technology approach. As a result, I'm not sure I see them using PassBook for the big things out there that we might normally think of for day-to-day operations.

The NFC debate is just noise right now. It's an interesting, emerging technology that has some intriguing potential. However, if I had a phone today with NFC I couldn't actually use it to do anything I care about. Until the payment industry and companies like VeriFONE begin to make investments so that you can actually use the technology for a wide range of transactions from buying gasoline to getting coffee to groceries, it's just an interesting technology. It's a lot like the beginnings of the DEBIT cards we all rely on today. I worked for a huge retailer at the time that was emerging and it took us nearly 18 months to get ~5,800 stores upgraded so we could take debit cards after we made the decision to do it. It seems like a good idea but there are a huge pile of operational (and security) issues that have to be sorted out before making that leap.
