Anyone have Satellite Radio?

Anyone have either of the satellite radios? I've been listening to Sirius now for the last couple of days and am really enjoying the Broadway's Best channel and the Sirius Pops and their classical voice channel, I love the fact that they play full operas everyday. But what I'm curious is, how is the signal? A partner in the law firm I work for says that if it's really cloudy it's hard to get a good signal. Has anyone else run in to this problem? I've been listening to it online so that isn't a problem. Well, I'd appreciate hearing from those who have a satellite radio. If I do buy into satellite radio, it'd be sirius. Thanks everyone.

We have XM radio here. It was a godsend on the drive to Florida (especially the traffic reports). I also listen to it on line everyday as I surf the net.

The signal will fade in and out depending on the landscape, but we didn't run into any problems with cloud cover during storms.

My current favorites are Laugh USA, the 60' & 70's channels as well as Frankie's Place and XM Comedy -XL, Kiss, The Heart and 1- Hit Wonders.

Have XM and couldn't live without it at this point. Love all of the music, being able to listen to any MLB game live, and of course, XM 202. I've looked at Sirius and find it to be too much like commericial radio. XM is a true alternative to commercial radio.

XM
They have a larger music library and more signal repeaters so you can actually use their portable unit for live programing.
I never have any problem with weather, just tunnels.

My favorites are Fungus, Squizz, 90's, 80's, Ethel, Lucy, Mix, the Blend and of course high voltage 202 (Ron and Fez rule).

I have XM and absolutely love it.:sohappy: In fact, I cannot stand fm radio anymore. I do not have signal problems in my house, some on the road which is due to a lack of open radio frequencies. If I didn't have to rely on the wireless fm transmitter, it would be awesome.

Not sure who has Directtv or not, but all of the music channels in the 800's will become XM satellite radio channels on Nov. 15th.

Hmmm let me touch on a couple of things here....

XM-28 (XM's Broadway Channel is much better than the doggy companies) Bigger playlist... and always tweaking and adding. Spamalot was just playing last night!

XM- has more Classical music -- (more channels / types to choose from, I believe)

The Doggy companies signal is AWFUL! XM has quite a few terrestrial repeaters (just to make up for where the Satellites cannot hit (i.e. downtown Chicago in-between the sky scrapers). As where the doggy company has NO terrestrial gear!!

XM Currently has 3 satellites in orbit (with a 4th coming up soon… and 5th after that as a ground spare)... 2 are stationed at 115 degrees running on 1 transponder each (plenty of coverage – and they can switch if need be) and another one parked at 85 degrees with both transponders transmitting. So... XM has great coverage compared to the doggy company. Not too mention they have the best / smallest equipment to choose from. The doggy companies gear is still awkward and bulky

The doggy company is all about throwing money at big names... Stern, Tony Hawk, Martha Stewart... while XM has invested heavily on the infrastructure and gear.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, and DMC-12, thanks for that play by play. You've just about helped me make up my mind, but next week I'm going to try out XM and listen for myself. Thanks again.

Yeah.. try it out... and let me know what you go with.

Since XM has the biggest and most powerful Boeing Commercial satellites... The signal is strong... and I have never lost signal in any type of weather situation! :D

I have satelite radio and listen to it all the time as well as my CDs of park music. Do you think they would ever get a Disney station on either XM or Sirius that would only play disney music from the parks and movies? I know they have radio Disney but thats not what I mean. Anyone think that would work? I think plenty of people would listen.

I have XM in the car and I love it. I wasted about $300 of my hard earned money on a Sirius player and had to trash the thing. It was a pain in the butt to basically rewire my car and then after I finally get it in, the reception I got while the car was moving was crap. The only time I lose signal with XM is when I'm passing an overpass... and it's only for about 1 second. I even get signal in the parking garage at work and in the casino (which my FM signal sometimes struggles in).

If either company got that kind of channel (which is doubtful- it wouldn't have QUITE as big a draw as you would think), it would probably be XM. They already have the permission to play Radio Disney.

Here's an amusing little fact about XM- Their first two satellites were named "Rock" and "Roll." The DJs on squiZZ joke around that the next two should be named "S*x" and "Drugs". But in reality, they're "Rhythm" and "Blues". I don't know what the 5th satellite is going to be called yet.

Their traffic channels are a GODSEND when you're traveling- even within the Orlando area. I thought I was going to be late to work one day when I was coming from the mall (the one you have to go on I-4 to get to), and turned on the traffic channel...yay for that! I wasn't late!

As other people have mentioned, they have terrestrial signals in the big cities. Like, in Washington, DC (my home metro area and XM's home base), they have terrestrial signal, so even if you're going in the tunnel under the Capitol, you still have signal.

Sirius also has a smaller play list (in general), and tries to break up their channels to look like they have more than they really do. XM has over 5 million customers, and this quarter will be the first that their sales are lower than Sirius's. The reason for that is because of Howard Stern. Sirius has a total of around 2.5-3 million customers.

XM also has licensing to broadcast for baseball, hockey, and college football. Sirius has pro football...and that's about it.

Also, a lot more cars are coming with XM ready radios. Just transfer or buy a subscription, and you're ready to go. Here's the website to see what companies (and models) have xm-ready stereos: http://www.xmradio.com/cars/

One thing you might want to be aware of when you're listening to XM on the internet- there are channels online that you can't get in the receiver, and channels on the receiver you can't get online. My biggest upset is that Radio Disney and the old-time radio shows can't be broadcast online.

I have Sirius and haven't had any frequency problems in my car. The boombox I have to keep near a window but its been good so far. Sirius also has a Radio Disney station. I guess they are on both but I would love to have a station with just Disney music. I would listen.

Wait- you have to use a BOOMBOX? Makes me even happier to have XM. XM has a little "bug" that's magnetic and you put on your car (mine is on the trunk, right by the rear window. My parents' is on the roof of their car).

I love my Roady 2. I can take it out of my car and connect it to my home kit, and listen to the radio in my room.
*mental note: get compass when you get home to see which way is south from my dorm window*
