I was just wondering if anyone has ever gone to Disney World and hated it with a passion but went back again and truly saw the magic?

I'm not aware of anyone like that. I would be surprised that someone who "hated it with a passion" would even go back. If that were me, my first experience would probably spoil any subsequent experience.

I don't know anyone who's *hated* Disney the first time, but I do know someone who experienced "antici-pointment." They had built the parks up so much in their mind that all the bad parts of the experience were amplified -- rain, bad park maintenance, rampart merchandising, etc.

This person's second trip was a great improvement. It helped that he had a new child through who's eyes he could experience the parks.

I remember when we left the after our first visit that my parents "absolutely" never wanted to go back. The last time they had been there only the Magic Kingdom existed and during that trip...Epcot and MGM had come into play and they were just exhausted. (Of course, the last time they went they only had one child and this time they had 3)

The funny thing was, a couple weeks after we got home, they decided that they wanted to go again. So, we wound up going back 8 months later, and then again a couple months later. They now go the same week every year and never complain about it.

I never hated it - not even close - but I do remember as a kid it being so much longer and harder of a day. Like, waiting in line for two hours for Imagination and things like that. It was like you spent your entire day in line. Now, I look back at that and think how much it's changed. Now I never wait more then 20 minutes in a queue and I make liberal use of FastPass and it seems like I have so much more time and get so much done. So I do like it more now then as a kid in terms of how long, slow and boring the waiting in line part used to be.

My brother cried the first time he went on the HM and was miserable for most of the rest of the day. Now, he's a DVC owner and I'm envious. I'll get there.

My best friend was completely opposed to going to Disney, she was convinced that she would hate it.

I tricked her into going to Epcot, and she loved it. Now all she can talk about is going back to Disney and seeing all the parks.:D

I wouldn't say I hated Disney the first time I went but had a really bad experience. My grandparents took me when I was in 8th grade for Christmas break to visit my uncle and his family in FLA. My uncle took us to what was just the MK at that time (SSE looked Like a fruit bowl) and wouldnt let us go on Space Mountain saying it was too dangerous, needless to say I was not happy and he ruined my Disney adventure. Ten years later my sister and I went back (Inaugaural year for All Star Sports) and had a blast---we have been back every year since...

It's funny, the first time we ever went back in 1991, we had the worst experience. My parents wrote to the company, and to the Contemporary. They then asked us to come back, and when we did we got upgraded and ever since we've been frequent guests. That's what I call guest service recovery!

I first went in 1989 and then again in 1993. Neither of those trips were outstanding. I finally went back last September and was blown away. From beginning to end was the ultimate vacation. I enjoyed it so much I took my Dad in February. He loved it too. What was wrong back in 89 and 90? I don't know. Maybe I wasn't ready for the magic. I now know that I needed it and it has captured my heart and I can't get enough!

My parent's story

My parents didn't like WDW the 1st time they went.

They had been to Disneyland a few times and when WDW 1st opened, they went in 1972 (I think??) and weren't impressed because in central Florida there wasn't a whole lot to do, unlike the other things to do in California.

They went back when I was 2 (1981) and LOVED it and haven't gone anywhere else since and are planning on retiring in central Florida someday.

without my mom...:lookaroun

My family visited Disney World when my brother and I were very young and did not make it back until I was about to graduate high school. On this trip we had five days and we were going to see EVERYTHING. Turns out this commando vacationing style kinda lost some magic for us. My brother and I decided to go, just the two of us, a couple of years later and had the BEST vacation we have ever had. This time we took a whole week and just took our time and saw everything slowly. It was great. We have a vacation planned in 18 days and we cannot wait!

Can't fathom that anyone could hate WDW... :veryconfu
My grandma hates all things Disney with the burning passion of a thousand dying suns, which is sad because my grandpa is a Disney freak

She was miserable the entire time she was there, and the one and only thing she liked was "Living with the Land", and I'm not kidding. On our day at the MK, she faked being sick just so she could go back to the hotel room. It's probably one of the worst times I've ever had at WDW, which says a lot considering I had a great time. I've only had good experiences!

My mom has vowed to never ever take my grandma back to WDW.

I second that motion :lookaroun

My first trip was with my parents when I was 12 (although we had been to Disneyland twice before this). The trips with my family were great and at the time I loved WDW but not to the extent I do now. Going with my DH has made me love WDW infinitely more than I did before. We can't seem to get enough.

The first time I went to WDW was in high school in the late 80s. And I don't remember a single thing from the entire trip. I just remember being completely bored. Flash forward 10 years, when I go to WDW for my honeymoon and I fell in love with it.

Yep. Went in 1973 when I was 8 and absolutely HATED it. I went to Disneyland in 1975 and still hated it. I never watched any Disney features and generally thought it was "cheesy kids stuff".

Around 1996 I went back as an adult with my wife and son, and I thought I would go crazy while we were there. Everything was Disney and I told my wife I longed to get out of there and see actual merchandise without Disney characters and use toilets that didn't flush themselves. . .

Something changed when we got back to the Philly airport though. People were being the sort of typical Philly jerks that I thought I missed while I was there, but then I saw a National Car Rental van with a big Disney World poster, and I started to think a week of niceness wasn't so bad.

So I asked then and there if my wife wanted to go back next year.

She looked at me like I had three heads.:lookaroun
