It appears that I'm going to be spending a weekend in St Louis in May, so I'd appreciate any suggestions for "must see" (aside from the obvious...the arch) places, and good restaurants.

Thanks guys! (In advance; you haven't let me down yet. ;) )

I haven't been for years but I absolutely LOVE the St. Louis Zoo. It's huge, has its own train transportation around the Zoo and it's free! It's a beautiful zoo. :-D

(also that is where the Bud(I can't spell the name of the beer) plant is I believe and they give tours. Dad was interested in going last time and Mom thought it would be cool but Andrew revolted and won out (he's a strange 19 year old!!)

I know you said the Arch, but if you go down there, be sure to watch the movie of the making of the arch. It's a very fascinating movie. I rode to the top of the arch once; it's a long wait because you ride up in these tiny little capsules (I couldn't sit up straight in it) and you see the city from 600 feet above the ground. There is nothing to do up in the top but look out observatory windows. Save your $5 and spend it on something else.

If you're into baseball at all, catch a game at Busch Stadium, just a few blocks from the Arch. St. Louis is a baseball town and they have very knowledgable fans who love their team and the game.

OOH! I'm from St. Louis!:sohappy: There are alot of neat places to see and do here. Definately see the Arch and the museam under it. The St. Louis zoo is probably one of the best classic zoos in the country. It's inside a Forest Park and its very beautiful. The train ride is fun, entry to the zoo is free, and lots more! The new Penguin and Puffin Coast is extremely well themed. Its indoors, very cold, and penguins are every where. Even on the overhead ledges. I also reccomend going to the Metropolitan Building ( the office tower with green roof ) and see its magnificant lobby. Bush stadium is the best place to catch a good ol' fashion base ball game. No trip is complete without visiting Union Station which has to be the funnest mall I've ever been to, plus you can catch the Metrolink for a nice ride.

Some great museams are here as well The St. Louis Science Center is a great museam with fun exibits and neat Omnimax Theater. Across the way is the Planetirium which has a room where you can look and view some realistic stars and has fun exibits about life in space. The St. Louis Art Museam is also found in Forest Park and is a great museam of art, with a real mummy ( well, all you can see is its feet LOL! ). The St. Louis History Museam has some neat stuff here and there, but I don't really reccomend it because I don't think some of their exibits are that good, and one of their most Interesting exibits which talked about the 1904 Worlds Fair was removed to talk about life in the City.

Also, why not visit my home town shurberb of St. Louis? Kirkwood! Its down town is VERY remenisent of Main St. USA at WDW. Complete with old fashion rail road station.

Well, that's about everything. To make it perferct is to top it off with its own WDW!:sohappy: Oh well, Have a good trip.

If you like music, there is a pretty active live music scene in the city. A lot of blues and jazz bands.

Ask the locals about the area of the city to go to see the best of local offerings in live music -- I think venues change around a bunch.

St. Charles is also located near St. Louis. I Love the shops downtown. I've gone there a couple of times as a weekend getaway. The streets are cobblestone, and it's very unique. They have riverboat gambling there also, if you wanted to do something like that. I had a lot of fun gambling, but I was horrible at it.

Grants Farm is another thing that is interesting. There is so much to do in St. Louis, it's hard to name one thing. The Museums are great. I really did enjoy the zoo though, it has to be one of the most unique, and the train that goes around it makes it all the better.

I needed to edit this because I forgot to also mention Union Station. It's been awhile since I've been there, but it's a fun Mall. MSU needs to post something here, I think he's from that area also. ImagineerBoy has given you some wonderful Ideas, he's pretty much hit upon anything I could think of.

Is St. Charles in that area? I don't know directions very well, but I always heard to be sure NOT to go into East St. Louis :lookaroun The gambling boat I'm thinking of is right down the street from St. Charles downtown....is that a safe area? I thought it was, but I was a tourist, so I didn't know :veryconfu

When I was in St. Louis back in '93, I stayed at the hotel in Union Station. It was a great place to stay. Does anyone know if the Key West Bar is still in the mall? I had a lot of fun there.

The Fox Theatre is another great place to go to. It's a great old theatre that's been restored.

Yeah, pretty much works like this...

Best place in the city to hang out is the Clayton/Forest Park area. It's by far the nicest, and it holds the Zoo, which has been mentioned many times above.

Chesterfield is also real nice, but it can get to be a bit far out.

Downtown St. Charles and the surrounding area has a couple very nice Casinos, including Harrah's and Ameristar, and as mentioned above, an old town style shopping district. A really fun place to eat and play over in this area is Dave and Buster's. They've got great food and a Disney Quest (without the virtual reality) type of play area geared towards adults.

Worst places to go, or should I say, places to avoid:

East St. Louis - Bad, bad things over here. Basically it consists of the immediate area, and then up to 5 miles away on the Illinois side of the river.

The immediate North and South areas just outside of Downtown St. Louis are in pretty bad shape when it comes to cleanliness and the type of people as well.

Like most cities, there is a fine line or road where things tend to change to the point where you don't have to be scared to walk down the street. The closest thing we have to that street here in St. Louis is either Kingshighway or Hampton. Both of them run perpendicular to Interstate 64/40. This is the highway that runs directly west out of Downtown.

For nice places to eat, it depends on your budget, but there are quite a few nice dining options in the immediate Clayton area. One of my favorites is J. Bucks, which refers to the late Jack Buck, and then his son and daughter Joe and Julie. It's slightly upscale, but still relaxed, and the price doesn't show it much at all.

As mentioned above, Kirkwood has a nice Old Town feel in a certain area, and then there's also "The Hill," which is probably the most famous area of St. Louis for good eats.

I think that's about all I can give you off the top of my head. Hope it helps!
