Anybody Out There Not Get Sick?

WDW is not a self-contained cruise ship. I'm not a doctor or CDC scientist, but with 60,000 central Floridians working on-site then heading home at the end of the day, I imagine this would very quickly become an Orlando-wide (or at least southwest Orange County-wide) epidemic. While I've heard plenty of anecdotal evidence about various colds going around, no news reports of Norwalk on the news, and no anecdotal evidence other than from the Internet. So I'm not that worried yet.

of those 60,000 workers...maybe 1,000-2,000 work in a resort that has been hit...

of those 2,000....3/4 probably have a strong enough immune system oor have satisfactory cleanliness habits to where the virus doesn't affect them.

keep in mind that on a cruise ship of 1,300 people, even just having 10% ill while on a week-long cruise is rare...so we're only talking about maybe 200 or so people. And if you're working at a place where you get to go home at the end of the day (not like on a cruise ship) and you come down with the illness, you're probably going to be staying home until it passes. Sure the other people in your family might get sick too, but you probably won't be using public facilities so the chance of a city or county-wide epidemic is just about absurd...

Things are a little slow around here for the holidays.
We have a multiple page thread on, not a trip report, but sick report...

I wasnt sick, but definitely had the screaming abdabs for two days, youngest Sak was bugling like a Royal Trumpeter, sadly on other bus guests, if you were one of them she is ever so sorry, however be grateful it was sick you received. Spoilt MVMCP a bit as they had to return to the resort, being a cold heartless uncaring father I stayed and watched the fireworks and parade.

On the plus side Disney wont have to use fertilizer on many of the MKs flower beds this year

We where at Beach Club from 11/24-12/4 and we where a party of six. My mom her husband and my brother all got sick. About 2 days after we returned. Not sure if it was the Norwalk virus or what. My mom and her husband live is Central Fl, and my bro lives up here in Il. My bro had it the worst was bed ridden for about a week.

I did get sick last week. But my wife and son who were also in the room did not. I had brought lysol wipes and I wiped down surfaces after each "episode" My wife also went through the room and wiped down pretty much anything I could have possibly touched.

I'm still fine, but my girlfriend got sick. I am not sure if she got it yesterday at EPCOT or today at EPCOT. We left early today as it was packed there and so she could get rest and get better for Christmas. But she did start feeling bad after Mission Space, maybe it was the boarding card she got. But you have to remember, there are thousands of people here from around the world, any person next to you could have it.

WE were there 11/28-12/06 and only 2 of us got sick out of 17. My nephew is 4 and he got sick our first full day there, threw up on my sister and needed to take "bathroom" meds and my bro in law's niece 3 had the same thing but it only lasted 24 hours and then they were fine. we didn't stay on property either but I did see alot of people with colds at the parks. We got colds when we got back because it was almost 80 when we left and it was 19 when we landed back home. Got to love the great lakes area!:xmas:

I posted in the other thread. Based on what limited info has been provided, it's not likely a Norwalk virus. Steps for protecting yourself apply to any virus. Wash your hands after going to the washroom and before eating or preparing food. Avoid raw shellfish.

Which brings up one of my pet peeves about WDW public restrooms (and most others for that matter). Did you ever notice that when you are leaving the restroom, the first thing you do is grab a handle to pull the door inward? So even if you're conscientious and wash your hands when you're done, you must grab a handle that thousands of others have used, many probably without washing their hands. Is it any wonder these things spread? In most hospitals, doors are designed so you can use your buttocks to push the door open without touching it.

I usually wash my hands and dry them, then use the towel to open the door when I leave. There's always a nearby trash can outside the restroom to get rid of it.

Its all this paranoia about germs that leads us to having lowered resistance in the first place.

If you use a towel to dry your hands, how do you get the paper to feed without touching the handle?

I concur, from my time working in America, I'd never seen so many people use so much hand sanitizer and wipes in my life! You guys wipe down everything and use the liquid on your hands every five minutes.

Yet at the same time I've never encountered so many people getting colds, throwing up etc.

Yet I never use hand sanitizer or anything of its kind, and I'm never ill. I'd rather keep up my immune system thank you! We're not created to blitz every bacterium that has ever existed.

This bug is going around in the "outside world" also, so it's not surprising that people at WDW are getting ill. Many people brought it with them, and others picked it up while on vacation.

I agree that it sometimes seems as if the people who worry most about germs seem to get sick more often, which makes them increase their germ attack.

I'm the only adult in my husband's family who has never had the flu, hasn't had any flu-like diseases in a couple of decades, yet I've never had a flu shot, while they all get one. And one sister-in - law has at least one barfing bug every year (currently recovering from one), despite being extremely germ phobic.

Then again, I grew up (at least until age 9) in a family of 7 in a two bedroom house with no central heat, and a slew of cats, dogs, birds, etc plus a chicken coop and vegetable garden. (with fertilizer, etc) My immune system has survived a lot.

My mother's approach to germs was "You'll eat a peck of dirt before you die."

I was rarely sick throughout my childhood. I live in a nice, tidy home, but don't obsess about germs. There isn't an anti-bacterial product anywhere to be found. My son is halfway through grade 8 and has missed two days of school in ten years of attending full-time due to illness.

Entirely anecdotal, but seems to lend credence to the argument that being germophobic creates more illness.

Just got back on Friday, and no one in our group was sick.

I, too, grew up in a neat and tidy house with a large garden where we shared our ice cream and lollipops with the dog. I now live on a farm with horses & cows, and still share my ice cream with the dog and my bed with 2 cats. I don't get a flu shot, do wash my hands but don't use sanitizer, and the only time I've been off sick from work in 30 years was for the birth of my daughter, and broken ribs from a horse kick.
