Any Cops here?

I'm curious if there are any cops here on the boards...

just a minor question.

A friend of mine is currently on a cross-coutry road trip. He got ticketed in Santa Barbara, CA for no front license plate. The problem is, his car has Florida plates and Registration, and FL doesn't issue front plates for Passenger vehicles.

I'm thinking that if he takes it to court, he'll win. He has no clue, since this is something that isn't supposed to happen.

I've driven my car in other states that have front plates, with no problem.

Was the officer just being a jerk? or is there a real law?

Just curious.. thanks!

I believe that you have to adhere to whatever laws of the state you are in.

Now, most cops won't pull you over for not having the front plate, unless they're a prick.

I'll check with my father on this for you, though. He's a cop....well...a sherriff...but he'll probably know. :)

I can't imagine that it can be illegal to not have front plate if your home State doesn't require it.

New Jersey requires front plates, but Pennsylvania does not. I work in PA, but live in NJ. Many people do the opposite, so all of them would be in violation every time they cross the bridge.

Since traffic laws are unique to each state, someone familiar with CA law would have to let us know for sure, but it defies common sense for anything like this to be true.

I hope you are very wrong, otherwise you would have to get a drivers license from every state that you want to drive in, and since it is illegal to have more than 1 drivers license, blah, blah, bla bla, yap yap yap.....

The supreme court made a decision many many moons ago that all states have to honor the rules of the state that you live in. So your drivers license from xyz state is good in all the other states. Your friend will win the case without any issues, (unless California is now the federal governmnet NOT). Have fun and use true logic, unless it is electronics with fuzzy logic. HAHAHAHA

I just looked it up online....

If he is registered in a "one plate" state then he should be cool. Especially since only one plate is issued.

When registration laws are enforced most states that require 2 license plates will enforce the front license plate law on out-of-state motorist if their state requires a front license plate.

More or less means you'll only get a ticket if YOUR state requires both plates.

When I said "adhere to the state's laws you are in" I was talking about speed limits, etc. I was simply stating that laws will change, such as seatbelts, so sometimes we have to be on guard.

I didn't know this law was different :)

Said to say, yes, it sounds like he was a jerk. *heavy sigh*

Someone I worked with in California gave a ticket to someone from Arizona for having his windows tinted too dark for California standards. I tried to tell him it was a bad ticket, but he was just trying to keep his numbers up. Yech. I never could understand that type of attitude.

Oh, well, I guess the only alternative is something from THX1138.

I think it's whatever state you LIVE in. For example, if you move to Florida, I think you have to get a Florida registration within 30 days.

Sound to me like the cop was being a prick. Typical.
